The parable of those who spend their wealth in God's way is that of a grain that produces seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. God multiplies for whom He wills. God is Bounteous and Knowing.
What does the Qur'an mean that God multiplies the reward for whom He wills?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:261 The likeness of those who spend their wealth in God's way is as the likeness of a grain which groweth seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. GOD GIVETH INCREASE MANIFOLD TO WHOM HE WILL. GOD IS ALL-EMBRACING, ALL-KNOWING. In because the multiplication is stated after a figure has already been given, which shows the figure is not a ceiling. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about charity multiplied - the grain that grows seven ears of a hundred? and Does the Qur'an say a good deed is multiplied ten times over?, with different reasons there.
- 02 2:245 Who is it that will lend unto God a goodly loan, SO THAT HE MAY GIVE IT INCREASE MANIFOLD? God straiteneth and enlargeth. Unto Him ye will return. In because the increase is promised on a loan, and the same verse says God both straitens and enlarges - which qualifies the promise in its own sentence. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about a 'goodly loan to God' repaid many times over?, with a different reason there.
- 03 2:268 The devil promiseth you destitution and enjoineth on you lewdness. BUT GOD PROMISETH YOU FORGIVENESS FROM HIMSELF WITH BOUNTY. God is All-Embracing, All-Knowing. In because it contrasts two promises about money and names fear of destitution as the devil's argument.
- 04 4:40 Lo, God wrongeth not even of the weight of an ant; and if there is a good deed, HE WILL DOUBLE IT and will give (the doer) from His presence an immense reward. In because it grounds the multiplying in the prior guarantee that nobody is wronged. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an count a bad deed once but multiply a good one?, with a different reason there.
- 05 57:18 Lo, those who give alms, both men and women, and lend unto God a goodly loan, IT WILL BE DOUBLED FOR THEM, and theirs will be a rich reward. In because it names men and women in the same clause and pairs the doubling with a further reward.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an's word here does not mean a fixed multiple. It means an increase whose size is not stated, and the text is careful about that.
2:261 shows it most clearly. The verse first gives an image with numbers in it - a grain that grows seven ears, a hundred grains in each ear - and THEN adds: GOD GIVETH INCREASE MANIFOLD TO WHOM HE WILL. If the seven hundred were the figure, the second clause would be redundant. It is there to say the image is not a ceiling.
The same clause recurs in every instance: TO WHOM HE WILL. The multiplication is discretionary.
2:245 is the loan verse, and it does something unusual: having promised the increase, it adds in the same breath GOD STRAITENETH AND ENLARGETH. The promise and the acknowledgement that provision narrows as well as widens sit in one sentence.
2:268 names the psychology the promise is set against, and it is the most useful verse here for a reader: THE DEVIL PROMISETH YOU DESTITUTION and enjoins meanness; GOD PROMISETH YOU FORGIVENESS FROM HIMSELF WITH BOUNTY. The competing offer is fear of running out.
4:40 supplies the floor under it all: God wrongs nobody by the weight of an ant - and then doubles the good deed on top of that.
57:18 pairs the doubling with a further reward and names men and women in the same clause.
So: an unstated increase, at God's discretion, promised chiefly for spending, set against the fear of poverty, and resting on a prior guarantee that nothing is taken away.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:261, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Have you not considered the notables of the Children of Israel after Moses? When they said to a prophet of theirs, "Appoint a king for us, and we will fight in the cause of God." He said, "Is it possible that, if fighting was ordained for you, you would not fight?" They said, "Why would we not fight in the cause of God, when we were driven out of our homes, along with our children?" But when fighting was ordained for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. But God is aware of the wrongdoers.
Bethink thee of the leaders of the Children of Israel after Moses, how they said unto a prophet whom they had: Set up for us a king and we will fight in Allah's way. He said: Would ye then refrain from fighting if fighting were prescribed for you? They said: Why should we not fight in Allah's way when we have been driven from our dwellings with our children? Yet, when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, all save a few of them. Allah is aware of evil-doers
Dost thou not look at the crowd of the children of Israel after Moses time, when they said to a prophet of theirs, 'Raise up for us a king, and we will fight in God's way?' Hast thou not considered the assembly of the children of Israel after the death of Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs, "Set up for us a king; we will do battle for the cause of God?" Hast thou not considered the assembly of the children of Israel, after the time of Moses; when they said unto their prophet Samual, set a king over us, that we may fight for the religion of God? They answered, and what should ail us that we should not fight for the religion of God, seeing we are dispossessed of our habitations, and deprived of our children? But when they were enjoined to go to war, they turned back, except a few of them: And God knew the ungodly

Those who believe in God and His messengers-these are the sincere and the witnesses with their Lord; they will have their reward and their light. But as for those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations-these are the inmates of the Blaze.
And those who believe in Allah and His messengers, they are the loyal, and the martyrs are with their Lord; they have their reward and their light; while as for those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, they are owners of hell-fire
And those who believe in God and His Apostle, they are the confessors and the martyrs with their Lord; for them is their hire and their light! But those who misbelieve and call our signs lies, they are the fellows of hell
And they who believed in God and his apostle are the men of truth, and the witnesses in the presence of their Lord; They shall have their recompense and their light: But as for the infidels, and those who give the lie to our signs, these shall be the inmates of Hell
And they who believe in God and his apostles, these are the men of veracity, and the witnesses in the presence of their Lord: They shall have their reward, and their light. But as to those who believe not, and accuse our signs of falsehood, they shall be the companions of hell

The translators word this verse differently
Know that the worldly life is only play, and distraction, and glitter, and boasting among you, and rivalry in wealth and children. It is like a rainfall that produces plants, and delights the disbelievers. But then it withers, and you see it yellowing, and then it becomes debris. While in the Hereafter there is severe agony, and forgiveness from God, and acceptance. The life of this world is nothing but enjoyment of vanity.
Know that the life of the world is only play, and idle talk, and pageantry, and boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children; as the likeness of vegetation after rain, whereof the growth is pleasing to the husbandman, but afterward it drieth up and thou seest it turning yellow, then it becometh straw. And in the Hereafter there is grievous punishment, and (also) forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure, whereas the life of the world is but matter of illusion
Know that the life of this world is but a sport, and a play, and an adornment, and something to boast of amongst yourselves; and the multiplying of children is like a rain-growth, its vegetation pleases the misbelievers; then they wither away, and thou mayest see them become yellow; then they become but grit. But in the hereafter is a severe woe, and forgiveness from God and His goodwill; but the life of this world is but a chattel of guile
Know ye that this world's life is only a sport, and pastime, and show, and a cause of vainglory among you! And the multiplying of riches and children is like the plants which spring up after rain - Their growth rejoiceth the husband-man; then they wither away, and thou seest them all yellow; then they become stubble. And in the next life is a severe chastisement, Or else pardon from God and His satisfaction: and this world's life is but a cheating fruition
Know that this present life is only a toy and a vain amusement: And worldly pomp, and the affectation of glory among you, and the multiplying of riches and children, are as the plants nourished by the rain, the springing up whereof delighteth the husbandmen; afterwards they wither, so that thou seest the same turned yellow, and at length they become dry stubble. And in the life to come will be a severe punishment for those who covet worldly grandeur; and pardon from God, and favour for those who renounce it: For this present life is no other than a deceitful provision

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:261, 2:245, 2:268, 4:40, 57:18, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - god + giveth + increase + manifold + to + whom + he + will; multiplieth + for + whom + he + will; god + is + all-embracing + all-knowing; doubleth + it. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 5 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:115 - matched on the all-embracing formula; 2:247 - matched on the all-embracing formula; 3:73 - about a dispute over who receives revelation; 4:130 - divorce provision; 5:54 - matched on the all-embracing formula.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
