O you who believe! Do not nullify your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like him who spends his wealth to be seen by the people, and does not believe in God and the Last Day. His likeness is that of a smooth rock covered with soil: a downpour strikes it, and leaves it bare-they gain nothing from their efforts. God does not guide the disbelieving people.
Does a good deed count if I do it to be seen?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:264 Itani has "Do not nullify your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like him who spends his wealth to be seen by the people", and the likeness ends "they gain nothing from their efforts". Rodwell has "No profit from their works shall they be able to gain".
- 02 4:38 Itani has "those who spend their money to be seen by people", and Palmer has "for appearance sake before men". The verse joins this giving to not believing "in God nor in the Last Day", as Itani has it.
- 03 4:142 Itani has "when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing off in front of people", and Pickthall has "they perform it languidly and to be seen of men". The verse speaks of the hypocrites, and of prayer.
- 04 107:4–6 The passage sets woe on those who pray and are heedless of their prayer, and the renderings of 107:6 differ: Itani has "Those who put on the appearance", Pickthall has "Who would be seen (at worship)", Rodwell has "Who make a shew of devotion", and Sale has "who play the hypocrites".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The five print a clear answer for giving: a gift made to be seen is made void. At 2:264 Itani has "Do not nullify your charitable deeds", and the likeness that follows ends "they gain nothing from their efforts", in Itani's words.
4:38 names the same giving, and Palmer has "for appearance sake before men". At 2:264 and at 4:38, in all five renderings, the one who gives to be seen is also one who does not believe in God and the Last Day. The verses join the two, and this study does not separate them.
For prayer, 4:142 speaks of the hypocrites: Itani has "showing off in front of people", and Rodwell has "to be seen of men". 107:4-6 sets woe on those who pray and are heedless of their prayer, and the renderings of 107:6 differ: Itani has "Those who put on the appearance", Palmer has "Who pretend", and Sale has "who play the hypocrites".
So the text speaks of deeds done to be seen in two settings, giving and prayer, and in each it ties the display to an inward fault: unbelief at 2:264 and 4:38, hypocrisy at 4:142, heedlessness at 107:5. It does not print a rule for a deed done for God that others also happen to see.
Whether a deed done partly for display counts in part is a question for , jurisprudence and commentary, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:264, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

O ye who believe! Render not vain your almsgiving by reproach and injury, like him who spendeth his wealth only to be seen of men and believeth not in Allah and the Last Day. His likeness is as the likeness of a rock whereon is dust of earth; a rainstorm smiteth it, leaving it smooth and bare. They have no control of aught of that which they have gained. Allah guideth not the disbelieving folk
O ye who believe! make not your almsgiving vain by taunts and annoyance, like him who expends what he has for the sake of appearances before men, and believes not in God and the last day; for his likeness is as the likeness of a flint with soil upon it, and a heavy shower falls on it and leaves it bare rock; they can do nought with what they earn, for God guides not the misbelieving folk
O ye who believe! make not your alms void by reproaches and injury, like him who spendeth his substance to be seen of men, and believeth not in God and in the latter day. The likeness of such an one is that of a rock with a thin soil upon it, on which a heavy rain falleth but leaveth it hard: No profit from their works shall they be able to gain; for God guideth not the unbelieving people
O true believers, make not your alms of none effect by reproaching, or mischief, as he who layeth out what he hath to appear unto men to give alms, and believeth not in God and the last day. The likeness of such a one, is as a flint covered with earth, on which a violent rain falleth, and leaveth it hard. They cannot prosper in any thing which they have gained, for God directeth not the unbelieving people

And the parable of those who spend their wealth seeking God's approval, and to strengthen their souls, is that of a garden on a hillside. If heavy rain falls on it, its produce is doubled; and if no heavy rain falls, then dew is enough. God is seeing of everything you do.

God does not commit an atom's weight of injustice; and if there is a good deed, He doubles it, and gives from His Presence a sublime compensation.
Lo! Allah wrongeth not even of the weight of an ant; and if there is a good deed, He will double it and will give (the doer) from His presence an immense reward
Verily, God would not wrong by the weight of an atom; and if it's a good work, He will double it and bring from Himself a mighty hire

He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear God's revelations being rejected, or ridiculed, do not sit with them until they engage in some other subject. Otherwise, you would be like them. God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers, into Hell, altogether.
He hath already revealed unto you in the Scripture that, when ye hear the revelations of Allah rejected and derided, (ye) sit not with them (who disbelieve and mock) until they engage in some other conversation. Lo! in that case (if ye stayed) ye would be like unto them. Lo! Allah will gather hypocrites and disbelievers, all together, into hell
He hath revealed this to you in the Book, that when ye hear the signs of God disbelieved in and mocked at, then sit ye not down with them until they plunge into another discourse, for verily, then ye would be like them. Verily, God will gather the hypocrites and misbelievers into hell together
And already hath He sent this down to you in the Book "WHEN YE SHALL HEAR THE SIGNS OF GOD THEY SHALL NOT BE BELIEVED BUT SHALL BE MOCKED AT." Sit ye not therefore with such, until they engage in other discourse; otherwise, ye will become like them. Verily God will gather the hypocrites and the infidels all together in Hell
And he hath already revealed unto you, in the book of the Koran, the following passage, when ye shall hear the signs of God, they shall not be believed, but they shall be laughed to scorn. Therefore sit not with them who believe not, until they engage in different discourse; for if ye do ye will certainly become like unto them. God will surely gather the ungodly and the unbelievers together in hell

But if the disbelievers get a turn, they say, "Did we not side with you, and defend you from the believers?" God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection; and God will give the disbelievers no means of overcoming the believers.
Those who wait upon occasion in regard to you and, if a victory cometh unto you from Allah, say: Are we not with you? and if the disbelievers meet with a success say: Had we not the mastery of you, and did we not protect you from the believers? - Allah will judge between you at the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will not give the disbelievers any way (of success) against the believers
Those who lie in wait for you, and if the victory be yours from God, say, 'Were we not with you?' and if the misbelievers have a chance, they say, 'Did we not get the mastery over you, and defend you from the believers?' But God shall judge between you on the resurrection day; for God will not give the misbelievers a way against believers
They watch you narrowly. Then if God grant you a victory, they say, "Are we not with you?" and if the infidels meet with a success, they say to them, "Were we not superior to you: and did we not defend you from those believers?" God shall judge betwixt ye on the day of the resurrection, and God will by no means make a way for the infidels over the believers
They who wait to observe what befalleth you, if victory be granted you from God, say, were we not with you? But if any advantage happen to the infidels, they say unto them, were we not superior to you, and have we not defended you against the believers? God shall judge between you on the day of resurrection; and God will not grant the unbelievers means to prevail over the faithful

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The anchors are the four places the question is put to: two verses on spending to be seen (2:264, 4:38), one on praying to be seen (4:142), and the closing verses of a short surah on prayer made for show (107:4-6). The probe 'to be seen|seen of men|seen by people|seen by the people|be seen' returns 24 rows at 11 verses. The four carried here are those where the display is attached to giving or to prayer; the other seven speak of being seen in other senses, or, at one verse, of setting out with display rather than of a deed of giving or prayer. This study does not say whether a deed done partly for display counts in part, or how a person is to judge their own motive. Those are questions for , jurisprudence and commentary, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
