We have destined for Hell multitudes of jinn and humans. They have hearts with which they do not understand. They have eyes with which they do not see. They have ears with which they do not hear. These are like cattle. In fact, they are further astray. These are the heedless.
What does the Qur'an mean by hearts and eyes that 'do not understand'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:179 They have HEARTS WHEREWITH THEY UNDERSTAND NOT, and EYES WHEREWITH THEY SEE NOT, and EARS WHEREWITH THEY HEAR NOT. These are as the cattle - nay, but they are worse. These are the neglectful. In because it is the fullest form of the formula, and because the organs are said to be PRESENT and not working, which is the whole point. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the jinn?, with a different reason there.
- 02 22:46 Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? FOR INDEED IT IS NOT THE EYES THAT GROW BLIND, BUT IT IS THE HEARTS, WHICH ARE WITHIN THE BOSOMS, THAT GROW BLIND. In because it states the thesis outright and locates the blindness precisely, and because the verse begins by recommending travel as the remedy.
- 03 2:7 God hath SEALED their hearts and their hearing, and on their eyes there is a covering. In because it attributes the closure to God, which is the other half of the account and must not be left out. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an teach predestination or free will?, with a different reason there.
- 04 6:46 Say: have ye thought - if God should take away your hearing and your sight and seal your hearts, who is the god who could restore it to you? In because it treats the faculties as a loan that could be withdrawn, and puts it as a question to people who still have them.
- 05 7:195 Have they feet wherewith they walk, or hands wherewith they hold, or eyes wherewith they see, or ears wherewith they hear? In because the identical construction is used of IDOLS, which shows the formula is about things that have the organs and cannot use them.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and 22:46 gives the thesis in a single sentence.
IT IS NOT THE EYES THAT GROW BLIND, BUT THE HEARTS, WHICH ARE WITHIN THE BOSOMS, THAT GROW BLIND. All four translators keep the anatomical insistence - the hearts WITHIN THE BOSOMS - as if to forestall a metaphorical reading.
7:179 gives the formula that recurs: hearts they do not understand with, eyes they do not see with, ears they do not hear with. The construction matters. The organs are all present. Nothing is missing. What is described is equipment that is not being used, and the comparison drawn is to cattle - and then, immediately, worse than cattle.
7:195 is the verse that shows what the formula is FOR. The identical construction - feet to walk with, hands to hold with, eyes to see with - is applied to IDOLS. A thing with the shape of the faculty and none of the function. When the same words are used of people, that is the charge.
Two verses sit on the other side. 2:7 says GOD sealed their hearts and their hearing and covered their eyes. And 6:46 asks the reader to imagine the faculties being taken away and to name who could give them back - which treats them as held on loan.
22:46 opens with something none of the others do, and it is practical: HAVE THEY NOT TRAVELLED IN THE LAND? The remedy offered for a closed understanding is going and looking at things.
Whether the sealing is cause or consequence is the same knot as Does the Qur'an teach predestination or free will? and What does the Qur'an say about hearts that harden?, and this study does not untie it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:179, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Already have We urged unto hell many of the jinn and humankind, having hearts wherewith they understand not, and having eyes wherewith they see not, and having ears wherewith they hear not. These are as the cattle - nay, but they are worse! These are the neglectful
We have created for hell many of the ginn and of mankind; they have hearts and they discern not therewith; they have eyes and they see not therewith; they have ears and they hear not therewith; they are like cattle, nay, they go more astray! these it is who care not
Many, moreover, of the Djinn and men have we created for Hell. Hearts have they with which they understand not, and eyes have they with which they see not, and ears have they with which they hearken not. They are like the brutes: Yea, they go more astray: these are the heedless
Verily, We have created many of the jinn and the men whose end shall be Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not and they have eyes wherewith they see not and they have ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle; nay, they are even more astray. They are indeed altogether heedless

To God belong the Most Beautiful Names, so call Him by them, and disregard those who blaspheme His names. They will be repaid for what they used to do.
Allah's are the fairest names. Invoke Him by them. And leave the company of those who blaspheme His names. They will be requited what they do
But God's are the good names; call on Him then thereby, and leave those who pervert His names; they shall be rewarded for that which they have done
Most excellent titles hath God: by these call ye on Him, and stand aloof from those who pervert his titles. For what they have done shall they be repaid

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:179, 22:46, 2:7, 6:46, 7:195, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - hearts + wherewith + understand + not; eyes + wherewith + see + not; seal + upon + hearts + hearing; hearts + locked. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
