And say, "The truth is from your Lord. Whoever wills-let him believe. And whoever wills-let him disbelieve". We have prepared for the unjust a Fire, whose curtains will hem them in. And when they cry for relief, they will be relieved with water like molten brass, which scalds the faces. What a miserable drink, and what a terrible place.
Does the Qur'an teach predestination or free will?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 18:29 Say: it is the truth from your Lord. THEN WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM BELIEVE, AND WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM DISBELIEVE. In because it is the strongest statement of choice in the text, and because it is put as an imperative addressed to the reader.
- 02 2:7 GOD HATH SEALED THEIR HEARTS and their hearing, and on their eyes there is a covering; theirs will be an awful doom. In because it is the strongest statement in the other direction, and because the sealing is attributed to God and the doom follows it in the same verse.
- 03 76:29–30 Lo, this is an admonishment: so whosoever will, let him choose a way unto his Lord. YET YE WILL NOT, UNLESS GOD WILLETH. In as ONE PASSAGE because the two halves contradict each other on their face and stand in consecutive lines - which is the problem in its purest form, stated by the text itself.
- 04 3:145 No soul can ever die except by God's leave and AT A TERM APPOINTED. In because it fixes one thing absolutely - the moment of death - which shows the text is willing to be specific about what is decreed. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about a good end (husn al-khatima)? and What does the Qur'an say about facing the death of a loved one?, with different reasons there.
- 05 47:16–17 Those are they whose hearts God hath sealed ... while as for those who walk aright, He addeth to their guidance. In as ONE PASSAGE because it puts the sealing and the increase side by side and makes both God's act.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an says both, and 76:29-30 says both in two consecutive lines. That is the finding, and no study that reports only one half is reporting the text.
On the side of choice: 18:29 could hardly be plainer. THEN WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM BELIEVE, AND WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM DISBELIEVE. It is an imperative, addressed to a hearer, offering both branches.
On the side of decree: 2:7 says GOD HATH SEALED their hearts and their hearing and covered their eyes - and then states the doom that follows. The sealing precedes the punishment in the sentence. Five further verses say the same thing in almost identical words and are recorded as drops; the repetition is itself part of the evidence.
Then 76:29-30, which no reader should be shown without both halves: SO WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM CHOOSE A WAY UNTO HIS LORD - and immediately - YET YE WILL NOT, UNLESS GOD WILLETH. The text places the invitation and its qualification in adjacent lines and offers no reconciliation.
3:145 shows that the text is perfectly willing to be specific about what is fixed when it wants to be: no soul dies except at an appointed term. It is specific about the hour of death and not about the disposition of the heart.
This is one of the two or three oldest disputes in Muslim theology and it was never settled by appeal to these verses alone, because the verses are on both sides. Naming the difficulty accurately is the most this study can do. Resolving it needs the theologians, and no work of kalam and no has cleared the rights audit. The related question of whom God guides and whom He leaves astray is carried by Who does God guide, and who does He leave astray, in the Qur'an?, which finds the same shape.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 18:29, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Say: (It is) the truth from the Lord of you (all). Then whosoever will, let him believe, and whosoever will, let him disbelieve. Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers Fire. Its tent encloseth them. If they ask for showers, they will be showered with water like to molten lead which burneth the faces. Calamitous the drink and ill the resting-place
But say, 'The truth is from your Lord, so let him who will, believe; and let him who will, disbelieve.' Verily, we have prepared for the evildoers a fire, sheets of which shall encompass them; and if they cry for help, they shall be helped with water like molten brass, which shall roast their faces: - an ill drink and an evil couch
And SAY: the truth is from your Lord: let him then who will, believe; and let him who will, be an infidel. But for the offenders we have got ready the fire whose smoke shall enwrap them: and if they implore help, helped shall they be with water like molten brass which shall scald their Wretched the drink! and an unhappy couch
And say, the truth is from your Lord; wherefore let him who will, believe, and let him who will, be incredulous. We have surely prepared for the unjust hell fire, the flame and smoke whereof shall surround them like a pavilion: And if they beg relief, they shall be relieved with water like molten brass, which shall scald their faces; O how miserable a portion, and how unhappy a couch

And their word was only to say, 'Lord, forgive us our sins and our extravagance in our affairs; and make firm our footing, and help us against the misbelieving folk

The likeness of the Garden promised to the righteous: in it are rivers of pure water, and rivers of milk forever fresh, and rivers of wine delightful to the drinkers, and rivers of strained honey. And therein they will have of every fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. Like one abiding in the Fire forever, and are given to drink boiling water, that cuts-up their bowels?
A similitude of the Garden which those who keep their duty (to Allah) are promised: Therein are rivers of water unpolluted, and rivers of milk whereof the flavour changeth not, and rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and rivers of clear-run honey; therein for them is every kind of fruit, with pardon from their Lord. (Are those who enjoy all this) like those who are immortal in the Fire and are given boiling water to drink so that it teareth their bowels
The similitude of Paradise which is promised to the pious,- in it are rivers of water without corruption, and rivers of milk, the taste whereof changes not, and rivers of wine delicious to those who drink; and rivers of honey clarified; and there shall they have all kinds of fruit and forgiveness from their Lord! (Is that) like him who dwells in the fire for aye? and who are given to drink boiling water that shall rend their bowels asunder
A picture of the Paradise which is promised to the God-fearing! Therein are rivers of water, which corrupt not: rivers of milk, whose taste changeth not: and rivers of wine, delicious to those who quaff it; And rivers of honey clarified: and therein are all kinds of fruit for them from their Lord! Is this like the lot of those who must dwell for ever in the fire? and shall have draughts of boiling water forced on them which will rend their bowels asunder
The description of paradise, which is promised unto the pious: Therein are rivers of incorruptible water; and rivers of milk, the taste whereof changeth not; and rivers of wine, pleasant unto those who drink; and rivers of clarified honey: And therein shall they have plenty of all kinds of fruits; and pardon from their Lord. Shall the man for whom these things are prepared, be as he who must dwell for ever in hell fire; and will have the boiling water given them to drink, which shall burst their bowels
47:16–17 — the verse above

Are they just waiting until the Hour comes to them suddenly? Its tokens have already come. But how will they be reminded when it has come to them?
Await they aught save the Hour, that it should come upon them unawares? And the beginnings thereof have already come. But how, when it hath come upon them, can they take their warning
Do they wait for aught but the Hour, that it should come to them suddenly? The conditions thereof have come already; how, when it has come on them, can they have their reminder
For what do the infidels wait, but that the Hour come suddenly on them? Already are its signs come, and when it hath come on them indeed, how can they be warned then
Do the infidels wait for any other than the last hour, that it may come upon them suddenly? Some signs thereof are already come: And when it shall actually overtake them, how can they then receive admonition

Know that there is no god but God, and ask forgiveness for your sin, and for the believing men and believing women. God knows your movements, and your resting-place.
So know (O Muhammad) that there is no Allah save Allah, and ask forgiveness for thy sin and for believing men and believing women. Allah knoweth (both) your place of turmoil and your place of rest
Know thou that there is no god but God; and ask pardon for thy sin and for the believers, men and women; for God knows your return and your resort
Know, then, that there is no god but God: and ask pardon for thy sin, and for believers, both men and women. God knoweth your busy movements, and your final resting-places
Know, therefore, that there is no god but God: And ask pardon for thy sin, and for the true believers both men and women. God knoweth your busy employment in the world, and the place of your abode hereafter

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:29, 2:7, 76:29-30, 3:145, 47:16-17, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - let + him + who + will + believe + disbelieve; whoso + willeth + let + him + take; god + hath + sealed + hearts; no + soul + die + save + permission; already + written + book. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 6 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 3:145 - Duplicate of the passage above; recorded once; 4:155 - near-identical to 2:7 and 47:16, both kept; 9:93 - near-identical; 16:108 - near-identical; 30:59 - near-identical; 78:39 - near-identical to 18:29 and 76:29.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
