It is He who made the earth manageable for you, so travel its regions, and eat of His provisions. To Him is the Resurgence.
What does the Qur'an say about earning a living?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 67:15 He it is Who hath made the earth subservient unto you, SO WALK IN THE PATHS THEREOF AND EAT OF HIS PROVIDENCE. And unto Him will be the resurrection. In because it is an imperative to go out and work the earth, and because the resurrection clause is attached to it without apology.
- 02 78:10–11 And have appointed the night as a cloak, AND HAVE APPOINTED THE DAY FOR LIVELIHOOD. In as ONE PASSAGE because the pairing is the point - the day exists for earning. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about work by day and rest by night?, with a different reason there.
- 03 62:10 And when the prayer is ended, THEN DISPERSE IN THE LAND AND SEEK OF GOD'S BOUNTY, and remember God much, that ye may be successful. In because it sends people back to work the moment worship ends. ALSO CARRIED by Is seeking wealth blameworthy in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 04 2:172 O ye who believe, EAT OF THE GOOD THINGS WHEREWITH WE HAVE PROVIDED YOU, and render thanks to God if it is Him ye worship. In because it makes enjoyment of what is earned a positive instruction rather than a concession.
- 05 28:58 AND HOW MANY A COMMUNITY HAVE WE DESTROYED THAT WAS THANKLESS FOR ITS MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD! In because it is the counterweight - livelihood is a thing communities are held accountable for their attitude toward.
- 06 16:114 So EAT OF THE LAWFUL AND GOOD FOOD WHICH GOD HATH PROVIDED FOR YOU, and thank the bounty of your Lord if it is Him ye serve. In because it adds the lawfulness condition to the enjoyment, which is the one qualification the set carries.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and the striking thing about them is the tone. There is no ambivalence about work in these renderings.
67:15 is an imperative: the earth has been made subservient to you, SO WALK IN THE PATHS THEREOF AND EAT OF HIS PROVIDENCE. Go out and work it. And then, in the same verse and without transition: AND UNTO HIM WILL BE THE RESURRECTION. The text sees no tension worth managing between the two.
78:11 states it structurally: WE APPOINTED THE DAY FOR LIVELIHOOD. Earning is what daylight is for.
62:10 sends people back: when the prayer is ended, DISPERSE IN THE LAND AND SEEK OF GOD'S BOUNTY - and then, remember God much. Work and remembrance are not alternatives in that sentence.
2:172 and 16:114 both instruct people to EAT OF THE GOOD THINGS provided - enjoyment as a command, with thanks attached. 16:114 adds the one qualification the set carries: lawful and good.
28:58 supplies the warning, and it is not about wealth but about attitude: HOW MANY A COMMUNITY HAVE WE DESTROYED THAT WAS THANKLESS FOR ITS MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD. The fault named is ingratitude for the living, not the living itself.
One verse this study records as a drop is worth naming anyway: 73:20 lists, in a single sentence, people keeping night vigil, OTHERS TRAVELLING IN THE LAND SEEKING GOD'S BOUNTY, and others fighting in God's way. Trade stands in the same clause as worship and warfare, which is a striking place to find it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 67:15, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The parable of those who disbelieve is that of someone who calls upon someone who hears nothing except screaming and yelling. Deaf, dumb, and blind-they do not understand.
The likeness of those who disbelieve (in relation to the messenger) is as the likeness of one who calleth unto that which heareth naught except a shout and cry. Deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they have no sense
The likeness of those who misbelieve is as the likeness of him who shouts to that which hears him not, save only a call and a cry; deafness, dumbness, blindness, and they shall not understand
The infidels resemble him who shouteth aloud to one who heareth no more than a call and cry! Deaf, Dumb, blind: therefore they have no understanding
The unbelievers are like unto one who crieth aloud to that which heareth not so much as his calling, or the sound of his voice. They are deaf, dumb, and blind, therefore do they not understand

And God cites the example of a town that was secure and peaceful, with its livelihood coming to it abundantly from every direction. But then it turned unappreciative of God's blessings, so God made it taste the robe of hunger and fear, because of what they used to craft.
Allah coineth a similitude: a township that dwelt secure and well content, its provision coming to it in abundance from every side, but it disbelieved in Allah's favours, so Allah made it experience the garb of dearth and fear because of what they used to do
God has struck out a parable: a city which was safe and quiet, its provision came to it in plenty from every place, and then it denied God's favours, and God made it feel the clothing of hunger and fear, for that which they had wrought
God proposeth the instance of a city, secure and at ease, to which its supplies come in plenty from every side. But she was thankless for the boons of God; God therefore made her taste the woe of famine and of fear, for what they had done

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 67:15, 78:10-11, 62:10, 2:172, 28:58, 16:114, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - walk + in + the + paths; travel + in + the + land + seek; appointed + the + day + for + livelihood; means + of + livelihood; eat + of + the + good + things + provided. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 9 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:25 - paradise; 2:57 - provision without labour; 5:5 - the food law, taken up by the study What does the Qur'an declare unlawful to eat?; 5:93 - the same; 7:160 - narrative provision; 16:69 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about bees, ants and birds as communities?; 20:81 - near-identical to 2:172; 71:20 - a fragment of Noah's argument from creation; 73:20 - on-topic and notable - travel for trade named beside fighting and night vigil.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
