You commit no error by seeking bounty from your Lord. When you disperse from Arafat, remember God at the Sacred Landmark. And remember Him as He has guided you. Although, before that, you were of those astray.
Is seeking wealth blameworthy in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:198 IT IS NO SIN FOR YOU THAT YE SEEK THE BOUNTY OF YOUR LORD (BY TRADING). In because it is a direct exemption, given about trading during the pilgrimage - the text going out of its way to say commerce is not a sin in the middle of a rite.
- 02 62:9–10 When the call is heard for prayer of the day of congregation, haste unto remembrance of God and leave your trading... AND WHEN THE PRAYER IS ENDED, THEN DISPERSE IN THE LAND AND SEEK OF GOD'S BOUNTY. In as ONE PASSAGE because the pair gives the whole answer: trade stops for the prayer and resumes the moment it ends.
- 03 28:77 But seek the abode of the Hereafter in that which God hath given thee, AND NEGLECT NOT THY PORTION OF THE WORLD. And be thou kind even as God hath been kind to thee, and seek not corruption in the earth. In because it is said TO KORAH, the richest man in the Qur'an, and it does not tell him to give it all up.
- 04 17:66 Your Lord is He Who driveth for you the ship upon the sea THAT YE MAY SEEK OF HIS BOUNTY. In because seeking wealth is named as the purpose for which something was provided.
- 05 59:8 (It is) for the poor fugitives who have been driven out from their homes and their belongings, WHO SEEK BOUNTY FROM GOD AND HELP GOD AND HIS MESSENGER. They are the loyal. In because the same phrase describes people the text is praising, which settles the tone.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
No. And the text says so in a way that is hard to miss.
2:198 is an explicit exemption: IT IS NO SIN FOR YOU THAT YE SEEK THE BOUNTY OF YOUR LORD - and the context is trading DURING THE PILGRIMAGE. The text takes the trouble to say that commerce in the middle of the most sacred rite is not a fault.
62:9-10 gives the whole shape in two verses. When the Friday call is heard, leave your trading and go. AND WHEN THE PRAYER IS ENDED, THEN DISPERSE IN THE LAND AND SEEK OF GOD'S BOUNTY. Business is suspended for the duration of the prayer and resumed immediately after. Nothing in the pair suggests trade is a lower activity; it is interrupted, not disapproved.
The phrase SEEK OF HIS BOUNTY (17:66, in Pickthall and Itani) recurs so often that it becomes the text's standard expression for making a living, and it is used of the sea, of ships, of the day - and at 59:8, in Pickthall's wording WHO SEEK BOUNTY FROM GOD, of the emigrants the text is praising.
28:77 is the sharpest evidence, because of who is addressed. It is spoken to Korah, the wealthiest figure in the Qur'an and one who comes to a bad end: SEEK THE ABODE OF THE HEREAFTER in what God has given you, AND NEGLECT NOT THY PORTION OF THE WORLD. The advice to the rich man is not divestment.
What the text does condemn is elsewhere and is about disposition rather than activity: hoarding (hoarding), the love of wealth (greed), boasting in it (the study What does the Qur'an say about pride in wealth?), and treating it as security (What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?). The distinction the Qur'an draws is between seeking and clinging.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:198, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

It is no sin for you that ye seek the bounty of your Lord (by trading). But, when ye press on in the multitude from 'Arafat, remember Allah by the sacred monument. Remember Him as He hath guided you, although before ye were of those astray
It is no crime to you that ye seek good from your Lord; but when ye pour forth from 'Arafat, remember God by the sacred beacon. Remember Him how He guided you, although ye were surely before of those who err
It shall be no crime in you if ye seek an increase from your Lord; and when ye pour swiftly on from Arafat, then remember God near the holy monument; and remember Him, because He hath guided you who before this were of those who went astray
It shall be no crime in you, if ye seek an increase from your Lord, by trading during the pilgrimage. And when ye go in procession from Arafat, remember God near the holy monument; and remember him for that he hath directed you, although ye were before this of the number of those who go astray

And carry out the Hajj and the Umrah for God. But if you are prevented, then whatever is feasible of offerings. And do not shave your heads until the offering has reached its destination. Whoever of you is sick, or has an injury of the head, then redemption of fasting, or charity, or worship. When you are secure: whoever continues the Umrah until the Hajj, then whatever is feasible of offering. But if he lacks the means, then fasting for three days during the Hajj and seven when you have returned, making ten in all. This is for he whose household is not present at the Sacred Mosque. And remain conscious of God, and know that God is stern in retribution.
Perform the pilgrimage and the visit (to Makka) for Allah. And if ye are prevented, then send such gifts as can be obtained with ease, and shave not your heads until the gifts have reached their destination. And whoever among you is sick or hath an ailment of the head must pay a ransom of fasting or almsgiving or offering. And if ye are in safety, then whosoever contenteth himself with the visit for the pilgrimage (shall give) such gifts as can be had with ease. And whosoever cannot find (such gifts), then a fast of three days while on the pilgrimage, and of seven when ye have returned; that is, ten in all. That is for him whoso folk are not present at the Inviolable Place of Worship. Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is severe in punishment
And fulfil the pilgrimage and the visitation to God; but if ye be besieged, then what is easiest for you by way of gift. But shave not your heads until your gift shall reach its destination; and he amongst you who is sick or has a hurt upon his head, then the redemption is by fasting or by alms or by an offering. But when ye are safe again, then let him who would enjoy the visitation until the pilgrimage (bring) what is easiest as a gift. And he who cannot find (anything to bring), then let him fast three days on the pilgrimage and seven when ye return; these make ten days complete. That is, for him whose family are not present in the Sacred Mosque; and fear God and know that God is keen to punish
Accomplish the Pilgrimage and the Visitation of the holy places in honour of God: and if ye be hemmed in by foes, send whatever offering shall be the easiest: and shave not your heads until the offering reach the place of sacrifice. But whoever among you is sick, or hath an ailment of the head, must satisfy by fasting, or alms, or an offering. And when ye are safe from foes, he who contents himself with the Visitation of the holy places, until the Pilgrimage, shall bring whatever offering shall be the easiest. But he who findeth nothing to offer, shall fast three days in the Pilgrimage itself, and seven days when ye return: they shall be ten days in all. This is binding on him whose family shall not be present at the sacred Mosque. And fear God, and know that God is terrible in punishing
Perform the pilgrimage of Mecca, and the visitation of God: And if ye be besieged, send that offering which shall be the easiest; and shave not your heads, until your offering reacheth the place of sacrifice. But whoever among you is sick, or is troubled with any distemper of the head, must redeem the shaving his head by fasting, or alms, or some offering. When ye are secure from enemies, he who tarrieth in the visitation of the temple of Mecca until the pilgrimage, shall bring that offering which shall be the easiest. But he who findeth not any thing to offer, shall fast three days in the pilgrimage, and seven when ye are returned: They shall be ten days complete. This is incumbent on him, whose family shall not be present at the holy temple. And fear God and know that God is severe in punishing

And take provisions, but the best provision is righteousness. And be mindful of Me, O people of understanding.
The pilgrimage is (in) the well-known months, and whoever is minded to perform the pilgrimage therein (let him remember that) there is (to be) no lewdness nor abuse nor angry conversation on the pilgrimage. Let the Pilgrimage be made in the months already known: whoever therefore undertaketh the Pilgrimage therein, let him not know a woman, nor transgress, nor wrangle in the Pilgrimage.

62:9 O credenti!

62:9 Enyi mlioamini!

Whatever God restored to His Messenger from the inhabitants of the villages belongs to God, and to the Messenger, and to the relatives, and to the orphans, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer; so that it may not circulate solely between the wealthy among you. Whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it. And fear God. God is severe in punishment.
That which Allah giveth as spoil unto His messenger from the people of the townships, it is for Allah and His messenger and for the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, that it become not a commodity between the rich among you. And whatsoever the messenger giveth you, take it. And whatsoever he forbiddeth, abstain (from it). And keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is stern in reprisal
What God gave as spoils to His Apostle of the people of the cities is God's, and the Apostle's, and for kinsfolk, orphans, and the poor, and the wayfarer, so that it should not be circulated amongst the rich men of you. And what the Apostle gives you, take; and what he forbids you, desist from; and fear God, verily, God is keen to punish
The spoil taken from the people of the towns and assigned by God to his apostle, belongeth to God, and to the apostle, and to his kindred, and to the orphan, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer, that none of it may circulate among such of you only as are rich: What the apostle hath given you, take: What he hath refused you, refuse: And fear ye God, for God is severe in punishing
The spoils of the inhabitants of the towns which God hath granted to his apostle, are due unto God and to the apostle, and him who is of kin to the apostle, and the orphans, and the poor, and the traveller; that they may not be for ever divided in a circle among such of you as are rich: What the apostle shall give you, that accept; and what he shall forbid you, that abstain from: And fear God; for God is severe in chastising

And those who, before them, had settled in the homeland, and had accepted faith. They love those who emigrated to them, and find no hesitation in their hearts in helping them. They give them priority over themselves, even if they themselves are needy. Whoever is protected from his natural greed-it is they who are the successful.
Those who entered the city and the faith before them love those who flee unto them for refuge, and find in their breasts no need for that which hath been given them, but prefer (the fugitives) above themselves though poverty become their lot. And whoso is saved from his own avarice - such are they who are successful
And those who were settled in the abode and the faith before them, love those who fled to them; and they do not find in their breasts a need of what has been given to them; preferring them to themselves, even though there be poverty amongst them; and whoso is preserved from his own covetousness, these are the prosperous
They of Medina who had been in possession of their abodes and embraced the faith before them, cherish those who take refuge with them; and they find not in their breasts any desire for what hath fallen to their share: they prefer them before themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And with such as are preserved from their own covetousness shall it be well
And they who quietly possessed the town of Medina, and professed the faith without molestation, before them, love him who hath fled unto them, and find in their breasts no want of that which is given the Mohajerin, but prefer them before themselves, although there be indigence among them. And whoso is preserved from the covetousness of his own soul, those shall surely prosper

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:198, 62:9-10, 28:77, 17:66, 59:8, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not part of that reading, although the answer above notes that his wording at 17:66 is the same as Pickthall's.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - seek + of + the + bounty; disperse + in + the + land + seek + bounty; neglect + not + thy + portion; no + sin + seek + bounty + lord. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 7 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 11:3 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?; 16:14 - near-identical in force to 17:66; 17:12 - near-identical; carried by What does the Qur'an say about work by day and rest by night?; 24:33 - carried by What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?; 28:73 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about work by day and rest by night?; 35:12 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the barrier between two seas?; 45:12 - near-identical to 17:66.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
