Wherever you may be, death will catch up with you, even if you were in fortified towers. When a good fortune comes their way, they say, "This is from God." But when a misfortune befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All is from God." So what is the matter with these people, that they hardly understand a thing?
Does evil come from God or from ourselves (4:78 vs 4:79)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:78 Some say good is from God and misfortune is from the one addressed, whom Pickthall and Sale name as Muhammad. The reply in Itani is "All is from God", and Pickthall has "This is of thy doing (O Muhammad)" as the words of those who say it.
- 02 4:79 The next verse divides the two. Itani has "whatever bad happens to you is from your own self", and Rodwell has "whatever betideth thee of evil is from thyself".
- 03 42:30 Misfortune is tied to what people do. Itani has "it is because of what your hands have earned", while Sale has "is sent you by God, for that which your hands have deserved".
- 04 64:11 Itani has "No disaster occurs except by God's leave", and Palmer has "No calamity befalls but by the permission of God".
- 05 3:165 A misfortune after a battle is answered in the same terms as 4:79. At 3:165 Itani has "It is from your own selves", and Pickthall has "It is from yourselves".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question sets two adjacent verses against each other. At 4:78 Itani has "All is from God". At 4:79 Itani has "whatever bad happens to you is from your own self".
4:78 gives the setting. When good comes, some say it is from God; when misfortune comes, they say it is from the one addressed. Pickthall has "This is of thy doing (O Muhammad)". The reply "All is from God" answers that saying. 4:79 then speaks to the hearer, with good from God and bad from the hearer's own self.
The other verses in the set use both ways of speaking. At 42:30 Itani has "it is because of what your hands have earned", and Sale has "is sent you by God, for that which your hands have deserved", so Sale puts both claims into one sentence. At 64:11 Itani has "No disaster occurs except by God's leave". At 3:165 Pickthall has "It is from yourselves".
So the renderings print two things side by side, often in the same passage: nothing befalls except by God's leave, and misfortune is earned by the hands of those it befalls. None of the five verses here states how the two are joined, and this study does not add a rule from outside them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:78, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Have you not considered those who were told, "Restrain your hands, and perform your prayers, and spend in regular charity"? But when fighting was ordained for them, a faction of them feared the people as God is ought to be feared, or even more. And they said, "Our Lord, why did You ordain fighting for us? If only You would postpone it for us for a short while." Say, "The enjoyments of this life are brief, but the Hereafter is better for the righteous, and you will not be wronged one bit."
Hast thou not seen those unto whom it was said: Withhold your hands, establish worship and pay the poordue, but when fighting was prescribed for them behold! a party of them fear mankind even as their fear of Allah or with greater fear, and say: Our Lord! Why hast Thou ordained fighting for us? If only Thou wouldst give us respite yet a while! Say (unto them, O Muhammad): The comfort of this world is scant; the Hereafter will be better for him who wardeth off (evil); and ye will not be wronged the down upon a date-stone
Do ye not see those to whom it is said, 'Restrain your hands, and be steadfast in prayer and give alms;' and when it is prescribed for them to fight then a band of them fear men, as though it were the fear of God or a still stronger fear, and they say, 'O our Lord! why hast thou prescribed for us to fight, couldst thou not let us abide till our near appointed time?' Say, 'The enjoyment of this world is but slight, and the next is better for him who fears:- but they shall not be wronged a straw
Hast thou not marked those to whom it was said, "Withhold your hands awhile from war; and observe prayer, and pay the stated alms." But when war is commanded them, lo! a portion of them fear men as with the fear of God, or with a yet greater fear, and say: "O our Lord! why hast thou commanded us war? Couldst thou not have given us respite till our not distant end?" SAY: Small the fruition of this world; but the next life is the true good for him who feareth God! and ye shall not be wronged so much as the skin of a date stone
Hast thou not observed those unto whom it was said, withhold your hands from war, and be constant at prayers, and pay the legal alms? But when war is commanded them, behold, a part of them fear men as they should fear God, or with a greater fear, and say, O Lord, wherefore hast thou commanded us to go to war, and hast not suffered us to wait our approaching end? Say unto them, The provision of this life is but small; but the future shall be better for him who feareth God; and ye shall not be in the least injured at the day of judgment

The Day when He gathers you for the Day of Gathering-that is the Day of Mutual Exchange. Whoever believes in God and acts with integrity, He will remit his misdeeds, and will admit him into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme achievement.
The day when He shall gather you unto the Day of Assembling, that will be a day of mutual disillusion. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The anchors are the two verses the question sets against each other, 4:78 and 4:79, and two verses that speak of misfortune in the same terms, 42:30 and 64:11. The probe 'from thyself|from your own self|from yourselves|from your own selves' returns 25 rows at 11 verses; 3:165 is added from it because it answers a misfortune in similar words: at 4:79 Pickthall has "from thyself" and Itani "from your own self", and at 3:165 Pickthall has "from yourselves" and Itani "from your own selves". This study reports how the renderings word the two claims. It does not set out a doctrine of decree that joins them; that is a matter of theology that these verses do not state.
