Everything in the heavens and the earth praises God. To Him belongs the Kingdom, and to Him all praise is due, and He is Able to do all things.
What does Surah at-Taghaabun say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 64:1 All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah; unto Him belongeth Sovereignty and unto Him belongeth praise, and He is Able to do all things. This is here because it opens the surah with praise of God from all that the heavens and the earth contain, and what belongs to Him is worded differently: "His is the kingdom" in Sale and Palmer, "His the Kingdom" in Rodwell, "unto Him belongeth Sovereignty" in Pickthall and "To Him belongs the Kingdom" in Itani.
- 02 64:2 He it is Who created you, but one of you is a disbeliever and one of you is a believer, and Allah is Seer of what ye do. This is here because the renderings differ in how they word the division of people into believers and unbelievers. Sale alone adds a word the others do not carry: "one of you is predestined to be an unbeliever, and another of you is predestined to be a believer". The others state the division without it: "yet some of you are infidel and others believers" in Rodwell, "of you is (one) a misbeliever and (one) a believer" in Palmer, whose brackets are his own, "one of you is a disbeliever and one of you is a believer" in Pickthall and "Some of you are unbelievers, and some of you are believers" in Itani.
- 03 64:3 He created the heavens and the earth with truth, and He shaped you and made good your shapes, and unto Him is the journeying. This is here because it speaks of creation and of forms, and the wording differs: "given you beautiful forms" in Sale, "given you goodly forms" in Rodwell, "made excellent your forms" in Palmer, "made good your shapes" in Pickthall and "designed you well" in Itani.
- 04 64:4 He knoweth all that is in the heavens and the earth, and He knoweth what ye conceal and what ye publish. And Allah is Aware of what is in the breasts (of men). This is here because it says what God knows, and what is within people is named differently: "the innermost part of mens breasts" in Sale, "the very secrets of men's breasts" in Rodwell, "the nature of men's breasts" in Palmer, "what is in the breasts (of men)" in Pickthall, whose bracket is his own, and "what is within the hearts" in Itani.
- 05 64:5 Hath not the story reached you of those who disbelieved of old and so did taste the ill-effects of their conduct, and theirs will be a painful doom. This is here because it recalls those who disbelieved before, and what they tasted is worded differently: "the evil consequence of their behaviour" in Sale, "the evil consequences of their doings" in Rodwell, "the evil result of their affair" in Palmer, "the ill-effects of their conduct" in Pickthall and "the ill consequences of their conduct" in Itani.
- 06 64:6 That was because their messengers (from Allah) kept coming unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they said: Shall mere mortals guide us? So they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah was independent (of them). Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise. This is here because it gives the question those people asked, which Sale words "shall men direct us?", Palmer "they said, 'Shall mortals guide us?'", Pickthall "Shall mere mortals guide us?", and Itani "Are human beings going to guide us?"
- 07 64:7 Those who disbelieve assert that they will not be raised again. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Yea, verily, by my Lord! ye will be raised again and then ye will be informed of what ye did; and that is easy for Allah. This is here because it answers those who say they will not be raised: "ye shall surely be raised again" in Sale, "ye shall surely be raised" in Rodwell, "ye will be raised again" in Pickthall and "you will be resurrected" in Itani.
- 08 64:8 So believe in Allah and His messenger and the light which We have revealed. And Allah is Informed of what ye do. This is here because it calls for belief, and what was sent down is "the light which We have sent down" in Sale, "the light which we have sent down" in Rodwell and Palmer, "the light which We have revealed" in Pickthall and "the Light which We sent down" in Itani.
- 09 64:9 The day when He shall gather you unto the Day of Assembling, that will be a day of mutual disillusion. And whoso believeth in Allah and doeth right, He will remit from him his evil deeds and will bring him unto Gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein to abide for ever. That is the supreme triumph. This is here because it names the day of gathering, and the renderings name it differently: Sale has "That will be the day of mutual deceit", Palmer "that is the day of cheating!", Itani "that is the Day of Mutual Exchange" and Pickthall "that will be a day of mutual disillusion". Rodwell gives Sale's name in capitals.
- 10 64:10 But those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, such are owners of the Fire; they will abide therein - a hapless journey's end. This is here because it says what awaits those who deny, and the closing words differ: Itani has "what a miserable fate!", Sale "a wretched journey shall it be thither", Rodwell "a wretched passage thither", Palmer "evil shall the journey be" and Pickthall "a hapless journey's end".
- 11 64:11 No calamity befalleth save by Allah's leave. And whosoever believeth in Allah, He guideth his heart. And Allah is Knower of all things. This is here because it says no misfortune comes but by leave, and the word for it differs: "No misfortune happeneth but by the permission of God" in Sale, "No mischance chanceth but by God's permission" in Rodwell, "No calamity befalls but by the permission of God" in Palmer, "No calamity befalleth save by Allah's leave" in Pickthall and "No disaster occurs except by God's leave" in Itani.
- 12 64:12 Obey Allah and obey His messenger; but if ye turn away, then the duty of Our messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly. This is here because it states the messenger's task: "only public preaching" in Sale, "only charged with plain preaching" in Rodwell, "only his plain message to preach" in Palmer, "only to convey (the message) plainly" in Pickthall and "to deliver the clear message" in Itani. Rodwell alone adds that "our apostle is not to blame".
- 13 64:13 Allah! There is no Allah save Him. In Allah, therefore, let believers put their trust. This is here because it states that there is no god but God and that believers are to trust in Him: "no God but He" in Sale and Rodwell, "no god but He" in Palmer and Itani, and Pickthall has "There is no Allah save Him".
- 14 64:14 O ye who believe! Lo! among your wives and your children there are enemies for you, therefor beware of them. And if ye efface and overlook and forgive, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. This is here because the renderings differ over number, an enemy or enemies: Sale has "verily of your wives and your children ye have an enemy" and Rodwell "in your wives and your children ye have an enemy", where Palmer has "among your wives and children are foes of yours", Pickthall "among your wives and your children there are enemies for you" and Itani "Among your wives and your children are enemies to you". The verse goes on to pardon: "if ye pardon, and overlook it, and forgive" in Palmer, "if ye efface and overlook and forgive" in Pickthall and "if you pardon, and overlook, and forgive" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about forgiveness and pardoning?, with a different reason there.
- 15 64:15 Your wealth and your children are only a temptation, whereas Allah! with Him is an immense reward. This is here because it says what wealth and children are: "only a temptation" in Sale and Pickthall, where Rodwell has "only a source of trial!", Palmer "but a trial" and Itani "a test". Also carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about wealth and children as the adornment of this life? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test?, with different reasons there.
- 16 64:16 So keep your duty to Allah as best ye can, and listen, and obey, and spend; that is better for your souls. And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful. This is here because it sets the measure of what is asked: Sale has "as much as ye are able", Palmer "as much as ye can!", Pickthall "as best ye can" and Itani "as much as you can", where Rodwell alone has "with all your might". What a person is saved from is "the covetousness of his own soul" in Sale, "their own greed" in Rodwell, "his own covetousness" in Palmer, "his own greed" in Pickthall and "his stinginess" in Itani.
- 17 64:17 If ye lend unto Allah a goodly loan, He will double it for you and will forgive you, for Allah is Responsive, Clement. This is here because it speaks of a loan to God: "an acceptable loan" in Sale, "a generous loan" in Rodwell, "a goodly loan" in Palmer and Pickthall and "a good loan" in Itani. What is promised for it is "He will double it for you" in Palmer and Pickthall and "He will double it to you" in Rodwell, where Itani has "He will multiply it for you". Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about a 'goodly loan to God' repaid many times over?, with a different reason there.
- 18 64:18 Knower of the Invisible and the Visible, the Mighty, the Wise. This is here because it closes the surah on what God knows: "what is hidden, and what is divulged" in Sale, "the Hidden and the Manifest" in Rodwell, "the unseen and the visible" in Palmer, "the Invisible and the Visible" in Pickthall and "the Unseen and the Seen" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah at-Taghaabun runs from 64:1 to 64:18. It opens with praise of God from all that the heavens and the earth contain, speaks of creation and of what God knows, recalls those before who rejected their messengers, names a day of gathering, and turns at the end to believers, to their households and wealth, and to spending.
At 64:2 the renderings differ in how they word the division of people into believers and unbelievers. This study does not resolve the difference.
At 64:6 those who rejected their messengers ask a question, which Sale words "shall men direct us?", Palmer "they said, 'Shall mortals guide us?'", Pickthall "Shall mere mortals guide us?", and Itani "Are human beings going to guide us?"
64:9 names the day, and the renderings name it differently: Sale has "That will be the day of mutual deceit", Palmer "that is the day of cheating!", Itani "that is the Day of Mutual Exchange" and Pickthall "that will be a day of mutual disillusion". Rodwell gives Sale's name in capitals. Deceit, cheating, disillusion and exchange are not the same word, and this study does not choose between them.
At 64:11 no misfortune comes but by leave: "No misfortune happeneth but by the permission of God" in Sale, "No calamity befalls but by the permission of God" in Palmer, "No calamity befalleth save by Allah's leave" in Pickthall and "No disaster occurs except by God's leave" in Itani. At 64:12 the messenger's task is "only public preaching" in Sale and "only to convey (the message) plainly" in Pickthall, and Rodwell alone adds that "our apostle is not to blame".
At 64:14 the renderings differ over number, an enemy or enemies: Sale has "verily of your wives and your children ye have an enemy" and Rodwell "in your wives and your children ye have an enemy", where Palmer has "among your wives and children are foes of yours", Pickthall "among your wives and your children there are enemies for you" and Itani "Among your wives and your children are enemies to you". The verse goes on to pardon: "if ye pardon, and overlook it, and forgive" in Palmer, "if ye efface and overlook and forgive" in Pickthall and "if you pardon, and overlook, and forgive" in Itani. At 64:15 wealth and children are "only a temptation" in Sale and Pickthall, where Rodwell has "only a source of trial!", Palmer "but a trial" and Itani "a test".
At 64:16 the measure of what is asked differs: Sale has "as much as ye are able", Palmer "as much as ye can!", Pickthall "as best ye can" and Itani "as much as you can", where Rodwell alone has "with all your might". What a person is saved from is "the covetousness of his own soul" in Sale, "their own greed" in Rodwell, "his own covetousness" in Palmer, "his own greed" in Pickthall and "his stinginess" in Itani.
At 64:17 the loan is "an acceptable loan" in Sale, "a generous loan" in Rodwell, "a goodly loan" in Palmer and Pickthall and "a good loan" in Itani, and what is promised for it is "He will double it for you" in Palmer and Pickthall and "He will double it to you" in Rodwell, where Itani has "He will multiply it for you".
The study What does the Qur'an say about forgiveness and pardoning? carries 64:14, the studies What does the Qur'an say about wealth and children as the adornment of this life? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test? carry 64:15 and the study What does the Qur'an say about a 'goodly loan to God' repaid many times over? carries 64:17, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say what the name given to the day carries in Arabic, who among the wives and children is meant, or on what occasion any verse here was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 64:1, widening across 18 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 18 passages, each with every cleared translation
18 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

That is because their messengers came to them with clear explanations, but they said, "Are human beings going to guide us?" So they disbelieved and turned away. But God is in no need. God is Independent and Praiseworthy.
That was because their messengers (from Allah) kept coming unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they said: Shall mere mortals guide us? So they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah was independent (of them). Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise
That is because their apostles came to them with manifest signs, and they said, 'Shall mortals guide us?' and they misbelieved and turned their backs. But God was independent of them; for God is rich and to be praised
This, for that when their apostles came to them with the clear tokens, they said, "What! shall men be our guides?" And they believed not and turned their backs. But God can dispense with them; for God is the Rich, the Praiseworthy
This shall they suffer, because their apostles came unto them with evident proofs of their mission, and they said, shall men direct us? Wherefore they believed not, and turned their backs. But God standeth in need of no person: For God is self-sufficient, and worthy to be praised

Jobesimtarët pretendojnë se nuk do të ringjallen. Thuaju: "Po, për Zotin tim, do të ringjalleni gjithsesi dhe pastaj do të njoftoheni për punët që keni bërë!" E kjo është e lehtë për Allahun.

So be conscious of God as much as you can, and listen, and obey, and give for your own good. He who is protected from his stinginess-these are the prosperous.
So keep your duty to Allah as best ye can, and listen, and obey, and spend; that is better for your souls. And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful
Then fear God as much as ye can! and hear, and obey, and expend in alms: it is better for yourselves. But whosoever is saved from his own covetousness - these are the prosperous
Fear God, then, with all your might, and hear and obey: and give alms for your own weal; for such as are saved from their own greed, shall prosper
Wherefore fear God, as much as ye are able; and hear, and obey: And give alms, for the good of your souls; for whoso is preserved from the covetousness of his own soul, they shall prosper

If ye lend unto Allah a goodly loan, He will double it for you and will forgive you, for Allah is Responsive, Clement
If ye lend to God a goodly loan, He will double it for you, and will forgive you; for God is grateful, clement
If ye lend God a generous loan, He will double it to you and will forgive you, for God is Grateful, Long-suffering
If ye lend unto God an acceptable loan, He will double the same unto you, and will forgive you: For God is grateful and long-suffering
64:18 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 64:1-18, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah at-Taghaabun, from 64:1 to 64:18, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
