Say, "Shall I take for myself a protector other than God, Originator of the heavens and the earth, and He feeds and is not fed?" Say, "I am instructed to be the first of those who submit." And do not be among the idolaters.
Who was the first Muslim: Muhammad, Moses, Abraham or earlier prophets?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 6:14 The one addressed is told to say he is bidden to be first. Itani has "I am instructed to be the first of those who submit", and Pickthall has "I am ordered to be the first to surrender (unto Him)".
- 02 6:163 The same speaker says he is first. Itani has "I am the first of those who submit", Rodwell has "I am the first of the Muslims", and Sale has "I am the first Moslem".
- 03 39:12 The command again. Itani has "And I was commanded to be the first of those who submit", and Sale has "the first Moslem".
- 04 7:143 Moses, after the mountain is turned to dust, says he is first. Itani has "I am the first of the believers", while Palmer has "I am the first of those who are resigned".
- 05 26:51 A group hoping for forgiveness also calls itself first. Itani has "we are the first of the believers", and Rodwell has "we are of the first who believe".
- 06 2:132 Abraham and Jacob charge their sons. Itani has "do not die unless you have submitted", and Rodwell has "die not unless ye be also Muslims".
- 07 3:67 Abraham is described. Itani has "he was a Monotheist, a Muslim", Pickthall has "an upright man who had surrendered (to Allah)", and Rodwell has "a Muslim".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question asks who the first Muslim was, since the renderings seem to give the title to more than one person.
Three verses give it to the one addressed. At 6:14 and 39:12 he is told to be first; at 6:163 he says he is. Itani has "I am the first of those who submit", and Sale has "I am the first Moslem". At 7:143 Moses says it of himself after the mountain falls to dust. Itani has "the first of the believers", and the other renderings print close to it, except Palmer. Palmer has "I am the first of those who are resigned". At 26:51 a group says the same of itself: Itani has "we are the first of the believers".
The same word is used of earlier people. At 2:132 Abraham and Jacob tell their sons not to die except in that state: Rodwell has "die not unless ye be also Muslims". At 3:67 Itani has "a Muslim", said of Abraham, and Pickthall has "an upright man who had surrendered (to Allah)".
So in these renderings each claim to be first is spoken in its own setting, by one speaker or group of itself. None of the five renders a verse in this set that ranks these claims, or names one person as first of all who submitted. The renderings also differ on the word itself: some print Muslim or Moslem, others submit, surrender, resigned or believers, at the same verse.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 6:14, widening across 7 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 7 passages, each with every cleared translation
7 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Say, 'Other than God shall I crave for a Lord when He is Lord of all?' but no soul shall earn aught save against itself; nor shall one bearing a burden bear the burden of another; and then unto your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that whereon ye do dispute
SAY: Shall I seek any other Lord than God, when He is Lord of all things? No soul shall labour but for itself; and no burdened one shall bear another's burden. At last ye shall return to your Lord, and he will declare that to you about which you differ
Say, shall I desire any other Lord besides God? Since He is the Lord of all things; and no soul shall acquire any merits or demerits but for itself; and no burdened soul shall bear the burden of another. Moreover unto your Lord shall ye return; and He shall declare unto you that concerning which ye now dispute

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The anchors are the verses that print a claim to be first, and the verses that use the same word of Abraham. A search of the five renderings for 'first' beside submit, surrender, resigned, Muslim, Moslem or believer returns five verses: 6:14, 6:163, 39:12, 7:143 and 26:51, all of which are here. 2:132 and 3:67 are added because they use the word submit, surrender or Muslim of Abraham and his sons. The probe 'Muslim|Muslims|Moslem|Moslems' returns 99 rows at 62 verses. This study reports whom the text calls first. It does not set the prophets in a sequence from writings outside the text.
