Some messengers We have already told you about, while some messengers We have not told you about. And God spoke to Moses directly.
Did God speak directly to any human, according to the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:164 Messengers We have mentioned unto thee before, and messengers We have not mentioned; AND GOD SPAKE DIRECTLY UNTO MOSES. In because it is the flat answer to the question, and because the adverb - directly, in speech - is the point of the clause.
- 02 42:51 It was not vouchsafed to any mortal that God should speak to him UNLESS BY REVELATION, OR FROM BEHIND A VEIL, OR THAT HE SENDETH A MESSENGER to reveal what He will. In because it is the text's own account of the modes, and it names three - which both permits divine speech and fences it.
- 03 7:143 And when Moses came to Our appointed tryst and HIS LORD HAD SPOKEN UNTO HIM, he said: My Lord, show me Thy Self that I may gaze upon Thee. He said: THOU WILT NOT SEE ME. In because it is the episode itself, and because it separates hearing from seeing in the sharpest possible way. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an say God can be seen?, with a different reason there.
- 04 6:91 They measure not the power of God its true measure when they say: GOD HATH NAUGHT REVEALED UNTO A HUMAN BEING. Say: who revealed the Book which Moses brought? In because it records the denial and answers it from precedent. ALSO CARRIED by the study Did the Qur'an simply borrow its stories from the Bible?, with a different reason there.
- 05 20:11–14 And when he reached it, he was called by name: O Moses! Lo, I, even I, am thy Lord ... Lo, I, even I, am God. There is no God save Me. So serve Me. In as ONE PASSAGE because the calling by name and the self-declaration are one speech, and because it is the only place in the set where the words spoken are given.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Yes - and the text names one man and then immediately regulates the claim.
4:164 is the answer: AND GOD SPAKE DIRECTLY UNTO MOSES. Pickthall and Itani mark it with directly, and Sale with discoursing with him.
42:51 is the more interesting verse, because it is a rule rather than a report. No mortal is spoken to by God EXCEPT in one of three ways: by revelation, or FROM BEHIND A VEIL, or by God sending a messenger to convey what He wills. The verse grants that divine speech happens and then constrains how. Notably, one of the three permitted modes involves a veil - so even the direct case is not unmediated in the way a reader might assume.
20:11-14 gives the only words. Moses is called BY NAME at the fire, and what he hears is a self-identification: I, even I, am thy Lord ... there is no God save Me.
7:143 is the limit. Moses, who has just been spoken to, asks to SEE - and is refused in four words: thou wilt not see Me. Hearing is granted; sight is not. The two are separated in a single scene, which is why Does the Qur'an say God can be seen? carries this verse too.
Six verses were dropped, all of them cases where God INSPIRED Moses to do something. That is a different category on the text's own account - 42:51 lists inspiration and speech separately - and folding them in would have blurred the distinction the text is at pains to draw.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:164, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

They do not value God as He should be valued, when they say, "God did not reveal anything to any human being." Say, "Who revealed the Scripture which Moses brought-a light and guidance for humanity?" You put it on scrolls, displaying them, yet concealing much. And you were taught what you did not know-neither you, nor your ancestors. Say, "God;" then leave them toying away in their speculation.

And they measure not the power of Allah its true measure when they say: Allah hath naught revealed unto a human being. Say (unto the Jews who speak thus): Who revealed the Book which Moses brought, a light and guidance for mankind, which ye have put on parchments which ye show, but ye hide much (thereof), and (by which) ye were taught that which ye knew not yourselves nor (did) your fathers (know it)? Say: Allah. Then leave them to their play of cavilling
They do not prize God at His true worth when they say, 'God has never revealed to mortal anything.' Say, 'Who revealed the Book wherewith Moses came, a light and a guidance unto men? Ye put it on papers which ye show, though ye hide much; and ye are taught what ye knew not, neither you nor your fathers.' Say, 'God,' then leave them in their discussion to play
No just estimate do they form of God when they say, "Nothing hath God sent down to man." SAY: Who sent down the Book which Moses brought, a light and guidance to man, which ye set down on paper, publishing part, but concealing most: though ye have now been taught that which neither ye nor your fathers knew? SAY: It is God: then leave them in their pastime of cavillings
And they do not make a just estimate of the attributes of God, when they say, 'God has not revealed anything to any man. Who does greater wrong than someone who invents falsehood against God, or says, "It was revealed to me," when nothing was revealed to him, or says, "I will reveal the like of what God revealed"? If only you could see the wrongdoers in the floods of death, as the angels with arms outstretched: "Give up your souls. Today you are being repaid with the torment of shame for having said about God other than the truth, and for being too proud to accept His revelations."
Who is guilty of more wrong than he who forgeth a lie against Allah, or saith: I am inspired, when he is not inspired in aught; and who saith: I will reveal the like of that which Allah hath revealed? If thou couldst see, when the wrong-doers reach the pangs of death and the angels stretch their hands out (saying): Deliver up your souls. This day ye are awarded doom of degradation for that ye spake concerning Allah other than the truth, and used to scorn His portents
Who is more unjust than he who devises against God a lie, or says, 'I am inspired,' when he was not inspired at all? and who says, 'I will bring down the like of what God has sent down;' but didst thou see when the unjust are in the floods of death, and the angels stretch forth their hands, 'Give ye forth your souls; today shall ye be recompensed with the torment of disgrace, for that ye did say against God what was not true, and were too proud to hear His signs
But is any more wicked than he who deviseth a lie of God, or saith, "I have had a revelation," when nothing was revealed to him? And who saith, "I can bring down a book like that which God hath sent down"? But couldst thou see when the ungodly are in the floods of death, and the angels reach forth their hands, saying, "Yield up your souls: - this day shall ye be recompensed with a humiliating punishment for your untrue sayings about God, and for proudly rejecting his signs
And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against God, or says, 'It has been revealed to me,' while nothing has been revealed to him; and who says, 'I will sent down the like of that which God has sent down?' And if thou couldst only see, when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death, and the angels stretch forth their hands, saying, 'Yield up your souls. This day shall you be awarded the punishment of disgrace because of that which you spoke against God falsely and because you turned away from His Signs with disdain

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:164, 42:51, 7:143, 6:91, 20:11-14, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - god + spoke + moses; spake + moses; speak + behind + veil; mortal + speak + god; inspiration + veil + messenger. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 6 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 7:117 - inspiration, which 42:51 distinguishes from direct speech; 7:148 - the calf's silence is the point; 10:87 - inspiration again; 19:26 - Mary's silence; 20:77 - inspiration; 26:52 - the same.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim that the Arabic doubles the verb at 4:164 and that Moses is the only person of whom this is said were removed, because no source a reader can check is given for either. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
