O you who believe! Revere God with due reverence, and do not die except as Muslims.
What does the Qur'an say about a good end (husn al-khatima)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:102 O ye who believe, observe your duty to God with right observance, and DIE NOT SAVE AS THOSE WHO HAVE SURRENDERED. In because it is the instruction in its bare form, and because what it asks for is not an act but a state at a particular moment.
- 02 2:132 Abraham enjoined it upon his sons, and Jacob also: O my sons, God hath chosen for you the religion; therefore die not save as men who have surrendered. In because it is the same words put in the mouth of two patriarchs speaking to their children, which shows the phrase used as a father's last instruction.
- 03 7:126 Our Lord, vouchsafe unto us steadfastness and MAKE US DIE as men who have surrendered. In because here it is a prayer rather than a command - the magicians of Pharaoh asking for it under threat of execution - and because it treats the manner of one's death as something to ask God for.
- 04 4:18 The forgiveness is not for those who do ill-deeds until, when death attendeth upon one of them, he saith: lo, I repent now; nor for those who die while they are disbelievers. In because it is the hard edge of the same subject: the verse that says a deathbed turn does not count, and it is the reason a good end is treated as something to secure in advance. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 05 3:145 No soul can ever die except by God's leave and at a term appointed. In because it supplies the premise under which the whole question is asked - the moment is fixed and not chosen.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and the phrase the question uses - a good end - does not appear in any of them. What appears is a narrower and sharper instruction.
3:102 says: DIE NOT SAVE AS THOSE WHO HAVE SURRENDERED. It is not a command to do something; it is a command about the condition you are to be in at a moment you do not control. 3:145 states that difficulty plainly - no soul dies except by God's leave, at a term appointed.
The same words appear twice more in company that changes their weight. In 2:132 they are Abraham's last charge to his sons, and Jacob's. In 7:126 they are a prayer, spoken by Pharaoh's magicians while he is threatening to crucify them: make us die as men who have surrendered. The phrase belongs, in this text, to people at the end of things.
4:18 is why the matter is urgent, and it is the hardest verse here. Repentance offered when death is already present does not count, and neither does anything from one who dies rejecting. The verse closes the door that a reader might hope stays open.
What is NOT here is any of the signs-of-a-good-end material - the reported marks by which a death is judged, the deathbed formulae, the omens. That is , and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit. Sixteen verses matched on the translators' word SEQUEL - a happy journey's end, the sequel of the Home - and every one of them turned out to be describing paradise rather than a manner of dying; they are recorded as drops.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:102, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

And remember God's blessings upon you; how you were enemies, and He reconciled your hearts, and by His grace you became brethren. And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it. God thus clarifies His revelations for you, so that you may be guided.

Repentance is available from God for those who commit evil out of ignorance, and then repent soon after. These-God will relent towards them. God is Knowing and Wise.
Forgiveness is only incumbent on Allah toward those who do evil in ignorance (and) then turn quickly (in repentance) to Allah. These are they toward whom Allah relenteth. Allah is ever Knower, Wise
God is only bound to turn again towards those who do evil through ignorance and then turn again. Surely, these will God turn again to, for God is knowing, wise
With God himself will the repentance of those who have done evil ignorantly, and then turn speedily unto Him, be accepted. These! God will turn unto them: for God is Knowing, Wise
Verily repentance will be accepted with God, from those who do evil ignorantly, and then repent speedily; unto them will God be turned: For God is knowing and wise

O you who believe! It is not permitted for you to inherit women against their will. And do not coerce them in order to take away some of what you had given them, unless they commit a proven adultery. And live with them in kindness. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which God has placed much good.
O ye who believe! It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the women (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness. But consort with them in kindness, for if ye hate them it may happen that ye hate a thing wherein Allah hath placed much good
O ye who believe! it is not lawful for you to inherit women's estates against their will; nor to hinder them, that ye may go off with part of what ye brought them, unless they commit fornication manifestly; but associate with them in reason, for if ye are averse from them, it may be that ye are averse from something wherein God has put much good for you
O believers! it is not allowed you to be heirs of your wives against their will; nor to hinder them from marrying, in order to take from them part of the dowry you had given them, unless they have been guilty of undoubted lewdness; but associate kindly with them: for if ye are estranged from them, haply ye are estranged from that in which God hath placed abundant good
O true believers, it is not lawful for you to be heirs of women against their will, nor to hinder them from marrying others, that ye may take away part of what ye have given them in dowry; unless they have been guilty of a manifest crime: But converse kindly with them. Their cry was only that they said: Our Lord! forgive us for our sins and wasted efforts, make our foothold sure, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk
And their word was only to say, 'Lord, forgive us our sins and our extravagance in our affairs; and make firm our footing, and help us against the misbelieving folk
Nor said they more than this: "O our Lord! forgive us our sins and our mistakes in this our work; and set our feet firm; and help us against the unbelieving people

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:102, 2:132, 7:126, 4:18, 3:145, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - die + not + save; die + muslims; surrendered; good + end; excellent + abode; happy + issue; fair + abode. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 17 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 3:14 - matched on 'happy issue' in one translation; the subject is worldly attraction; 5:117 - the subject is Jesus' testimony, not a good end; 10:11 - matched incidentally; the subject is respite; 13:18 - reward, not the manner of death; 13:24 - 'sequel of the Home' is a paradise formula - it is carried by What does the Qur'an say about the highest garden (al-Firdaws)?; 16:30 - reward - already left out of What does the Qur'an say about repelling evil with good? for the same reason; 20:132 - the same 'sequel' formula; 25:76 - a description of the Garden - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the highest garden (al-Firdaws)?; 34:14 - a narrative death, and the subject is the jinn's ignorance of it; 37:58 - a question asked in paradise; the subject is deathlessness there; 38:25 - 'journey's end' is again the paradise formula; 38:40 - the same; 65:2 - divorce procedure; 6:135 - the sequel formula again; 13:42 - the same; 13:22 - the same; 10:11 - Duplicate of the entry above; recorded once.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
