No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision. He is the Subtle, the Expert.
Does the Qur'an say God can be seen?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 6:103 EYES CANNOT REACH HIM but He reaches the eyes - so Sale; NO VISION TAKETH IN HIM - Rodwell; SIGHT PERCEIVES HIM NOT - Palmer; VISION COMPREHENDETH HIM NOT - Pickthall. In because it is the central denial, and because it qualified ONLY through a declared synonym set: the four translators use four different verbs, so under a single-word rule this verse would have failed and the study would have been built without it.
- 02 7:143 Moses said: My Lord, show me Thy Self, that I may gaze upon Thee. He said: THOU WILT NOT SEE ME; but gaze upon the mountain - and when his Lord revealed His glory to the mountain He sent it crashing down, and Moses fell down senseless. In because it is the refusal given to the one person who was spoken to directly, and because what happens to the mountain is the reason offered. ALSO CARRIED by Did God speak directly to any human, according to the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 03 41:20–22 Until, when they reach it, their ears and their eyes and their skins testify against them ... and ye did not hide yourselves lest your ears and your eyes and your skins should testify against you. In because it is the third verse the synonym set returned, and it is here to be seen and set aside rather than quietly dropped - it concerns being seen BY God, not seeing Him.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This study exists to put two verses in front of a reader, and to be honest that the tradition has never agreed on what they settle.
6:103 is the denial, and it is worth pausing on how it reached this study at all. Sale writes EYES CANNOT REACH HIM. Rodwell: NO VISION TAKETH IN HIM. Palmer: SIGHT PERCEIVES HIM NOT. Pickthall: VISION COMPREHENDETH HIM NOT. Four translators, four verbs, no shared word. Under the majority-match rule with a single term this verse qualifies nowhere and the study would have been built without its most important line. It is here because the declared synonym set carried all four. That is a clear demonstration of why the synonym-set rule exists, and a reader should know the study nearly missed its own central verse.
7:143 is the narrative refusal. Moses - the one man the text says God spoke to directly - asks to see, and is told THOU WILT NOT SEE ME. The reason offered is not a doctrine but a demonstration: look at the mountain instead. The mountain is levelled and Moses falls senseless.
Now the honest complication. Both of these concern THIS life. 75:23, carried by What does the Qur'an say about seeing God in paradise?, says that on the Day of Resurrection faces will be LOOKING TOWARD THEIR LORD, and 83:15 says the rejectors will be VEILED from Him that day. Whether 6:103 governs the hereafter or only the present is the whole of the dispute, and it is a dispute the text does not resolve in its own words.
This study reports the denial. Its companion reports the looking. Neither adjudicates, because adjudicating requires the theologians, and no work of kalam and no has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 6:103, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The translators word this verse differently
We thus diversify the revelations, lest they say, "You have studied," and to clarify them for people who know.
Thus do We display Our revelations that they may say (unto thee, Muhammad): "Thou hast studied," and that We may make (it) clear for people who have knowledge
Thus do we turn about the signs, that they may say, 'Thou hast studied,' and that we may explain to those who know
Thus variously do we apply our signs, that they may say, "Thou hast studied deep:" and that to people of understanding we may make them clear
And thus do We explain the Signs in various ways that the truth may become established and that they may say, 'Thou hast read out what thou hast learnt' and that We may explain it to a people who have no knowledge

Na alipokuja Musa kwenye miadi yetu, na Mola wake Mlezi akamuongelesha, alisema: Mola wangu Mlezi! Nionyeshe nikutazame. Mwenyezi Mungu akasema: Hutaniona. Lakini utazame huo mlima. Ikiwa utabaki mahali pake, basi utaniona.

41:20 hanga Yeroo ishee bira dhufan, dhageettiin isaanii, agartuuwwan isaanitiifi gogaaleen isaanii waan isaan dalagaa turan ragaa isaan irratti ba’u. [2]
41:21 Gogaalee isaanitiin “Maalif ragaa nurratti baatu?” jedhan. [Isaan] ni jedhu: “Rabbii Isa waan hunda dubbachiisetu nu dubbachiise, inni kan yeroo jalqabaa isin uume, kan gara Isaatti deebifamtan.”
41:22 Isin kan of dhoksitan hin taane dhageettiin keessan, agartuuleen keessaniifi gogaaleen keessan ragaa isin irratti ba’uurraa. Haa ta’u malee, Rabbiin hedduu waan isin dalagdanii hinbeekuu yaaddan. [3]

And We saved those who believed and were righteous.
And We delivered those who believed and used to keep their duty to Allah
but we saved those who believed and who did fear
But we rescued the believing and the God-fearing
but We delivered those who believed, and feared God

The Day when God's enemies are herded into the Fire, forcibly.
And (make mention of) the day when the enemies of Allah are gathered unto the Fire, they are driven on
And the day when the enemies of God shall be gathered together into the fire, marshalled along
And warn of the day when the enemies of God shall be gathered unto the fire urged on in bands
And warn them of the day, on which the enemies of God shall be gathered together unto hell fire, and shall march in distinct bands

It is that thought of yours about your Lord that led you to ruin-so you became of the losers.
That, your thought which ye did think about your Lord, hath ruined you; and ye find yourselves (this day) among the lost
And that thought of yours which ye thought concerning your Lord has destroyed you, and ye have now become of those who lose
And this your thought which ye did think of your Lord hath ruined you, so that ye are become of those who perish
This was your opinion, which ye imagined of your Lord: It hath ruined you; and ye are become lost people

If they endure patiently, the Fire will be their residence; and if they make up excuses, they will not be pardoned.
And though they are resigned, yet the Fire is still their home; and if they ask for favour, yet they are not of those unto whom favour can be shown
And if they are patient, still the fire is a resort for them; and if they ask for favour again, they shall not be taken into favour
And be they patient, still the fire shall be their abode: or if they beg for favour, yet shall they not be of favoured
Whether they bear their torment, hell fire shall be their abode; or whether they beg for favour, they shall not obtain favour
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 6:103, 7:143, 41:20-22, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - eyes + reach; vision + taketh; sight + perceives; vision + comprehendeth; show + me + that + i + may + gaze; thou + wilt + not + see + me. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 7:145 - what followed the episode, not part of the refusal.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
