Say, "Whoever is hostile to Gabriel-it is he who revealed it to your heart by God's leave, confirming what preceded it, and guidance and good news for the believers."
Did Gabriel or the Holy Spirit bring the revelation (2:97 vs 16:102)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:97 All five name Gabriel as the one who brought it down. Itani has "it is he who revealed it to your heart by God's leave", and Rodwell has "hath caused the Koran to descend on thy heart".
- 02 16:102 All five name the Holy Spirit. Itani has "The Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord", and Pickthall has "The holy Spirit hath delivered it from thy Lord".
- 03 26:193 A third name for the bringer. Itani has "The Honest Spirit came down with it", Pickthall has "the True Spirit", and Palmer has "the Faithful Spirit".
- 04 26:194 The place it was brought to, in the same words as 2:97. At 26:194 Itani has "Upon your heart", and Pickthall has "Upon thy heart".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question reads 2:97 and 16:102 as naming two different bringers of the revelation.
At 2:97 all five name Gabriel. Itani has "it is he who revealed it to your heart by God's leave". At 16:102 all five name the Holy Spirit. Itani has "The Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord". At 26:193 a third name is printed: Itani has "The Honest Spirit", and Palmer has "the Faithful Spirit".
The verses share their terms. 2:97 and 26:194 name the same place: Rodwell has "on thy heart" at 2:97, and Pickthall has "Upon thy heart" at 26:194. 2:97 says it came by God's leave; 16:102 says it came from your Lord.
None of the five renders a verse in this set that says, in one sentence, that Gabriel and the spirit are the same, and none says they are two. In a few verses outside this set Sale or Rodwell prints the name Gabriel beside the word spirit where the other four do not; that pairing is the translator's, not the shared wording.
So the renderings print one revelation, brought down to the heart, by God's leave, and they name its bringer as Gabriel at 2:97 and as a spirit at 16:102 and 26:193. They do not state in this set whether those are one bringer or two.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:97, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

When We substitute in the Koran an abrogating verse in lieu of a verse abrogated, -- and God best knoweth the fitness of that which He revealeth, -- the infidels say, thou art only a forger of these verses: But the greater part of them know not truth from falsehood
16:102 — the verse above
Easy-read (simplified)walaqad na'lamu annahum yaqooloona innamaa yu'allimuhu basharun lisaanu lladhee yulhidoona ilayhi a'jamiyyun wahaadhaa lisaanun 'arabiyyun mubeen
DIN 31635walaqad naʿlamu ʾannahum yaqūlūna ʾinnamā yuʿallimuhu bašarun lisānu llaḏī yulḥidūna ʾilayhi ʾaʿǧamiyyun wahāḏā lisānun ʿarabiyyun mubīnun
We are well aware that they say, "It is a human being who is teaching him." But the tongue of him they allude to is foreign, while this is a clear Arabic tongue.
And We know well that they say: Only a man teacheth him. The speech of him at whom they falsely hint is outlandish, and this is clear Arabic speech
We knew that they said, 'It is only some mortal who teaches him.' - The tongue of him they lean towards is barbarous, and this is plain Arabic
We also know that they say, "Surely a certain person teacheth him." But the tongue of him at whom they hint is foreign, while this Koran is in the plain Arabic
We also know that they say, verily, a certain man teacheth him to compose the Koran. The tongue of the person unto whom they incline, is a foreign tongue; but this, wherein the Koran is written, is the perspicuous Arabic tongue
Easy-read (simplified)inna lladheena laa yu'minoona bi'aayaati llaahi laa yahdeehimu llaahu walahum 'adhaabun aleem
DIN 31635ʾinna llaḏīna lā yuʾminūna biʾāyāti llāhi lā yahdīhimu llāhu walahum ʿaḏābun ʾalīmun
Those who do not believe in God's revelations-God will not guide them, and for them is a painful punishment.
Lo! those who disbelieve the revelations of Allah, Allah guideth them not and theirs will be a painful doom
Verily, those who believe not in God's signs, God will not guide them, and for them is grievous woe
As for those who believe not in the signs of God, God will not guide them, and a sore torment doth await them
Moreover as of those who believe not in the signs of God, God will not direct them, and they shall suffer a painful torment

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The anchors are the two verses the question sets side by side, 2:97 and 16:102, and 26:193, which names the bringer a third way. 26:194 is added because it completes the sentence of 26:193 and names the same place as 2:97. The probe 'Gabriel' returns 26 rows at 13 verses; all five renderings print the name at three of them, one being 2:97, and at the other ten only one or two renderings print it. The probe 'Holy Spirit|Holy Ghost' returns 19 rows at 4 verses, 16:102 among them. This study reports what the renderings name. It does not draw on writings outside the text to say who the spirit is.
