And when your Lord proclaimed: "If you give thanks, I will grant you increase; but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is severe."
What does the Qur'an say about gratitude?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 14:7 If ye give thanks, I will give you more; but if ye are thankless, lo! My punishment is dire. In because it is the conditional the whole theme turns on, and because both halves are in the one sentence.
- 02 2:152 Remember Me, I will remember you. Give thanks to Me, and reject not Me. In because it pairs thanks with remembrance and sets ingratitude opposite thanks as its named contrary.
- 03 34:13 Give thanks, O House of David - few of My bondmen are thankful. In because the text's own estimate of how common gratitude is appears here, and it is not flattering.
- 04 17:3 The seed of those We carried with Noah - lo! he was a grateful servant. In because it is gratitude used as the description of a whole person, and of a prophet.
- 05 27:40 (Solomon) said: this is of the bounty of my Lord, that He may try me whether I give thanks or am ungrateful. Whoso giveth thanks giveth thanks for his own soul. In because it says who the benefit accrues to.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and one of them is the hinge.
14:7 says: if ye give thanks, I will give you more; if ye are thankless, My punishment is dire. Both halves are in one sentence, and readers who quote it usually quote the first. The verse offers increase and threatens in the same breath.
27:40 answers a question 14:7 raises. If thanks brings increase, who is the increase for? Solomon, looking at a throne brought to him: whoso gives thanks, gives thanks FOR HIS OWN SOUL. The benefit is stated to run back to the thankful person.
34:13 is the sobering one - give thanks, O House of David; FEW of My servants are thankful - and it is spoken in the middle of a description of great wealth and craftsmanship. The text does not present gratitude as the natural response to plenty.
2:152 pairs thanks with remembrance and names its opposite: reject not Me. The contrary of thanks in that verse is not misery; it is denial.
Four further verses that end in a thankfulness clause are recorded as drops rather than counted, because a closing clause is not what the verse is about.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 14:7, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Even as We have sent unto you a messenger from among you, who reciteth unto you Our revelations and causeth you to grow, and teacheth you the Scripture and wisdom, and teacheth you that which ye knew not
Thus have we sent amongst you an apostle of yourselves, to recite to you our signs, to purify you and teach you the Book and wisdom, and to teach you what ye did not know

Then, when We decreed death for him, nothing indicated his death to them except an earthworm eating at his staff. Then, when he fell down, it became clear to the sprites that, had they known the unseen, they would not have remained in the demeaning torment.

When the first of the two promises came true, We sent against you servants of Ours, possessing great might, and they ransacked your homes. It was a promise fulfilled.
So when the time for the first of the two came, We roused against you slaves of Ours of great might who ravaged (your) country, and it was a threat performed
And when the threat for the first (sin) of the two came, we sent over them servants of ours, endued with violence, and they searched inside your houses; and it was an accomplished threat
So when the menace for the first crime came to be inflicted, we sent against you our servants endued with terrible prowess; and they searched the inmost part of your abodes, and the menace was accomplished
And when the punishment threatened for the first of those transgressions came to be executed, We sent against you our servants, indued with exceeding strength in war, and they searched the inner apartments of your houses; and the prediction became accomplished

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 14:7, 2:152, 34:13, 17:3, 27:40, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - thanks + increase; grateful + increase; thankful + few; few + thankful; few + grateful; gratitude; thankful + servant; give + thanks + favour; thank + me. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 5:6; 8:26; 30:46; 35:30. The reason for each was not recorded.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
