And for Solomon the wind-its outward journey was one month, and its return journey was one month. And We made a spring of tar flow for him. And there were sprites that worked under him, by the leave of his Lord. But whoever of them swerved from Our command, We make him taste of the punishment of the Inferno.
What does the Qur'an say about Solomon's power over the jinn and the wind?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 34:12–13 And unto Solomon We gave the wind, WHEREOF THE MORNING COURSE WAS A MONTH'S JOURNEY AND THE EVENING COURSE A MONTH'S JOURNEY, and We caused a fount of copper to gush forth for him, and OF THE JINN WHO WORKED BEFORE HIM BY PERMISSION OF HIS LORD... They made for him what he willed: synagogues and statues, basins like wells and boilers built into the ground. In as ONE PASSAGE because the wind, the copper and the jinn labour are one grant, and because 34:13 says what the jinn actually built.
- 02 21:81–82 And unto Solomon We subdued the wind in its raging. It set by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And of the evil ones there were some WHO DIVED FOR HIM AND DID OTHER WORK, AND WE WERE GUARDIAN UNTO THEM. In because the last clause states that God, not Solomon, was the guardian over them.
- 03 27:17–19 And there were gathered together unto Solomon HIS ARMIES OF THE JINN AND HUMANKIND AND OF THE BIRDS, and they were set in battle order; till, when they reached the Valley of the Ants, an ant exclaimed: O ants, enter your dwellings lest Solomon and his armies crush you, unperceiving. In as ONE PASSAGE because the three-part army and the ant's warning belong together, and the ant excuses them. ALSO CARRIED by the staged signed study bees-ants-birds, with a different reason there.
- 04 38:35–36 He said: MY LORD, FORGIVE ME AND BESTOW ON ME SOVEREIGNTY SUCH AS SHALL NOT BELONG TO ANY AFTER ME. So We made the wind subservient unto him, setting fair by his command whithersoever he intended. In as ONE PASSAGE because the power is asked for, and the request begins with forgiveness.
- 05 34:14 And when We decreed death for him, NOTHING SHOWED HIS DEATH TO THEM SAVE A CREEPING CREATURE OF THE EARTH WHICH GNAWED AWAY HIS STAFF. And when he fell, THE JINN SAW CLEARLY HOW, IF THEY HAD KNOWN THE UNSEEN, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE CONTINUED IN EXTREME TOIL. In because it is the text's own deflation of the whole subject - the jinn did not know their master was dead.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five passages, and the last one takes back most of what the first four grant.
The grant is large. The wind, subdued, with a stated speed - 34:12 says its morning course was a month's journey and its evening course a month's journey. A fount of molten copper. Jinn working before him BY PERMISSION OF HIS LORD, building what 34:13 lists: sanctuaries, statues, great basins and fixed cauldrons. And 27:17 gives him ARMIES OF THE JINN AND HUMANKIND AND OF THE BIRDS, in ranks.
Two qualifications sit inside the grant. 21:82 says of the jinn who dived for him: AND WE WERE GUARDIAN UNTO THEM. The custody is God's. And 38:35 shows the power being ASKED for - and the request opens with MY LORD, FORGIVE ME, before it asks for a kingdom that will belong to no one after him.
Then 34:14, which is the strangest verse in the set. Solomon dies leaning on his staff, and NOTHING SHOWED HIS DEATH TO THEM SAVE A CREEPING CREATURE OF THE EARTH WHICH GNAWED AWAY HIS STAFF. When he falls, the jinn realise that IF THEY HAD KNOWN THE UNSEEN THEY WOULD NOT HAVE CONTINUED IN THIS HUMILIATING TOIL.
The verse is not about Solomon. It is an argument against the idea that the jinn know hidden things - they went on labouring for a dead man. The signed study jinn reaches the same conclusion from other verses.
So the Qur'an grants Solomon extraordinary command and then uses the manner of his death to deflate the powers of those commanded.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 34:12–13, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

And unto Solomon (We gave) the wind, whereof the morning course was a month's journey and the evening course a month's journey, and We caused the fount of copper to gush forth for him, and (We gave him) certain of the jinn who worked before him by permission of his Lord. And such of them as deviated from Our command, them We caused to taste the punishment of flaming Fire
And to Solomon the wind; its morning journey was a month, and its evening journey was a month; and we made to flow for him a fountain of molten brass; and of the ginns some to work before him by the permission of his Lord; and whoso swerves amongst them from our bidding we will give him to taste the torment and the blaze
And unto Solomon did we subject the wind, which travelled in the morning a month's journey, and a month's journey in the evening. And we made a fountain of molten brass to flow for him. And of the Djinn were some who worked in his presence, by the will of his Lord; and such of them as swerved from our bidding will we cause to taste the torment of the flame
And We made the wind subject unto Solomon: It blew in the morning for a month, and in the evening for a month. And We made a fountain of molten brass to flow for him. And some of the genii were obliged to work in his presence, by the will of his Lord; and whoever of them turned aside from our command, We will cause him to taste the pain of hell fire

34:12 Naye Suleiman tuliufanya upepo umtumikie.

We bestowed upon David favor from Us: "O mountains, and birds: echo with him." And We softened iron for him.
And assuredly We gave David grace from Us, (saying): O ye hills and birds, echo his psalms of praise! And We made the iron supple unto him
And we did give David grace from us, 'O ye mountains! echo (God's praises) with him, and ye birds!' and we softened for him iron
Of old bestowed we on David a gift, our special boon: - "Ye mountains and ye birds answer his songs of praise." And we made the iron soft for him
We heretofore bestowed on David excellence from Us: And We said, O mountains, sing alternate praises with him; and We obliged the birds also to join therein. And We softened the iron for him

Then, when We decreed death for him, nothing indicated his death to them except an earthworm eating at his staff. Then, when he fell down, it became clear to the sprites that, had they known the unseen, they would not have remained in the demeaning torment.

And when we decreed for him death, naught guided them to his death save a reptile of the earth that ate his staff; and when he fell down it was made manifest to the ginns that, had they but known the unseen, they need not have tarried in the shameful torment
And when we decreed the death of Solomon, nothing shewed them that he was dead but a reptile of the earth that gnawed the staff which supported his corpse. And when it fell, the Djinn perceived that if they had known the things unseen, they had not continued in this shameful affliction

27:19 19. Taigi jis [Suleimanas (Saliamos)] nusišypsojo, patenkintas jos kalba, ir tarė: „Mano Viešpaties, suteik man galią ir gebėjimą, kad aš būčiau dėkingas už Tavo Malones, kurias Tu suteikei man ir mano tėvams, ir kad aš daryčiau teisingus gerus darbus, kurie patenkintų Tave, ir priimk mane Savo Gailesntingumu tarp Savo teisingųjų vergų.“

27:17 Süleyman'a cinlerden, insanlardan ve kuşlardan orduları toplandı.

They made for him whatever he pleased, of palaces, and statues, and large dishes like fishponds, and cauldrons standing firm on their trevets; and We said, work righteousness, O family of David, with thanksgiving; for few of my servants are thankful

In Sheba's homeland there used to be a wonder: two gardens, on the right, and on the left. "Eat of your Lord's provision, and give thanks to Him." A good land, and a forgiving Lord.
There was indeed a sign for Sheba in their dwelling-place: Two gardens on the right hand and the left (as who should say): Eat of the provision of your Lord and render thanks to Him. A fair land and an indulgent Lord
Seba had in their dwellings a sign; two gardens, on the right hand and on the left, 'Eat from the provision of your Lord; and give thanks to Him! a good country and a forgiving Lord
A sign there was to SABA, in their dwelling places: - two gardens, the one on the right hand and the other on the left: - "Eat ye of your Lord's supplies, and give thanks to him: Goodly is the country, and gracious is the Lord
The descendants of Saba had heretofore a sign in their dwellings; namely, two gardens, on the right hand and on the left: And it was said unto them, eat ye of the provision of your Lord, and give thanks unto Him; ye have a good country, and a gracious Lord

But they turned away, so We unleashed against them the flood of the dam; and We substituted their two gardens with two gardens of bitter fruits, thorny shrubs, and meager harvest.
But they were froward, so We sent on them the flood of 'Iram, and in exchange for their two gardens gave them two gardens bearing bitter fruit, the tamarisk and here and there a lote-tree
but they turned away, and we sent against them the flood of the dyke; and we changed for them their two gardens into two gardens that grew bitter fruit and tamarisk, and some few lote trees
But they turned aside: so we sent upon them the flood of Irem; and we changed them their gardens into two gardens of bitter fruit and tamarisk and some few jujube trees
But they turned aside from what We had commanded them; wherefore We sent against them the inundation of al Arem, and We changed their two gardens for them into two gardens producing bitter fruit, and tamarisks, and some little fruit of the lote-tree

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 34:12-13, 21:81-82, 27:17-19, 38:35-36, 34:14, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - we + subdued + the + wind + unto + solomon; the + wind + its + morning + course; of + the + jinn + who + worked + before + him; divers + and + builders; kingdom + such + as + will + not + belong + to + any + after + me. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
