It is by of grace from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you make a decision, put your trust in God; God loves the trusting.
What does the Qur'an say about seeking forgiveness for others?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:159 It was by the mercy of God that thou wast lenient with them; for if thou hadst been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from round about thee. SO PARDON THEM AND ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THEM AND CONSULT WITH THEM UPON THE CONDUCT OF AFFAIRS. In because it puts three things in one instruction - pardon, intercede, and then consult - after a reverse for which they were responsible.
- 02 40:7–9 Those who bear the Throne, and all who are round about it, hymn the praises of their Lord and believe in Him AND ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE: our Lord, Thou comprehendest all things in mercy and knowledge, therefor forgive those who repent and follow Thy way... AND MAKE THEM ENTER THE GARDENS OF EDEN WHICH THOU HAST PROMISED THEM, WITH SUCH OF THEIR FATHERS AND THEIR WIVES AND THEIR DESCENDANTS AS DO RIGHT. In as ONE PASSAGE because the angels' prayer is quoted in full and it asks for the person's family too. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about God's mercy encompassing all things?, with a different reason there.
- 03 59:10 And those who came after them say: OUR LORD, FORGIVE US AND OUR BRETHREN WHO WERE BEFORE US IN THE FAITH, and place not in our hearts any rancour toward those who believe. In because it is a prayer by the living for the dead and it asks for a clean heart in the same breath. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about praying for the dead?, with a different reason there.
- 04 9:113–114 IT IS NOT FOR THE PROPHET, AND THOSE WHO BELIEVE, TO PRAY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF IDOLATERS even though they may be near of kin, after it hath become clear that they are people of hell-fire. The prayer of Abraham for the forgiveness of his father was only because of a promise he had promised him, but when it became clear that he was an enemy of God he disowned him. In as ONE PASSAGE because it states the one limit and then explains the precedent that might have been cited against it.
- 05 9:80 Ask forgiveness for them, or ask not forgiveness for them; THOUGH THOU ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THEM SEVENTY TIMES, GOD WILL NOT FORGIVE THEM. In because it is the sharpest statement of the limit and it is addressed to the Prophet about people he wanted to help. ALSO CARRIED by the study Who does God guide, and who does He leave astray, in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 06 47:19 So know that there is no God save God, AND ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THY SIN AND FOR BELIEVING MEN AND BELIEVING WOMEN. In because it instructs the Prophet to ask for himself and for the community in one clause, and names both men and women.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an describes this being done by angels, by prophets, and by ordinary believers - and it names one limit.
40:7-9 is the fullest and the most surprising. THOSE WHO BEAR THE THRONE, and all around it, praise God, believe in Him, AND ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE. Their prayer is quoted, and it does not stop at the individual: bring them into the Gardens of Eden WITH SUCH OF THEIR FATHERS AND THEIR WIVES AND THEIR DESCENDANTS AS DO RIGHT. The angels ask for the person's family as well.
59:10 is the human version and its second half is the striking part: forgive us AND OUR BRETHREN WHO WERE BEFORE US IN THE FAITH - and PLACE NOT IN OUR HEARTS ANY RANCOUR toward those who believe. The prayer for others and the request for a clean heart toward others are one sentence.
3:159 puts the instruction in a hard place. After a reverse for which the community was at fault, the Prophet is told: PARDON THEM, ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THEM, AND CONSULT WITH THEM. Pardon, intercession, and then continued partnership.
47:19 has him ask for himself and for BELIEVING MEN AND BELIEVING WOMEN in one clause.
The limit is stated twice and it is narrow. 9:113 says it is not for the Prophet or the believers to pray for the forgiveness of idolaters, EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY BE NEAR OF KIN, once it is clear where they stand - and 9:114 pre-empts the obvious objection by explaining Abraham's prayer for his father as the keeping of a promise, later withdrawn.
9:80 is the sharpest: ASK SEVENTY TIMES AND IT WILL NOT BE GRANTED. It is addressed to a man who wanted to help them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:159, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

It was by the mercy of Allah that thou wast lenient with them (O Muhammad), for if thou hadst been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from round about thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult with them upon the conduct of affairs. And when thou art resolved, then put thy trust in Allah. Lo! Allah loveth those who put their trust (in Him)
It was by a sort of mercy from God thou didst deal gently with them, for hadst thou been rough and rude of heart they had dispersed from around thee. But pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and take counsel with them in the affair. As for what thou hast resolved, rely upon God; verily, God loves those who do rely
Of the mercy of God thou hast spoken to them in gentle terms. Hadst thou been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from thee. Therefore, forgive and ask for pardon for them, and consult them in the affair of war, and when thou art resolved, then put thou thy trust in God, for God loveth those who trust in Him
And as to the mercy granted unto the disobedient from God, thou O Mohammed hast been mild towards them; but if thou hadst been severe, and hard-hearted, they had surely separated themselves from about thee. Therefore forgive them, and ask pardon for them: And consult them in the affair of war; and after thou hast deliberated, trust in God; for God loveth those who trust in Him

Before them the people of Noah rejected the truth, as did the confederates after them. Every community plotted against their messenger, to capture him. And they argued with falsehood, to defeat with it the truth. But I seized them. What a punishment it was!
The folk of Noah and the factions after them denied (their messengers) before these, and every nation purposed to seize their messenger and argued falsely, (thinking) thereby to refute the Truth. Then I seized them, and how (awful) was My punishment
The people of Noah before them called the prophets liars; and the confederates after them; and every nation schemed against their Apostle to catch him. And they wrangled with falsehood that they might refute the truth thereby, but I seized them, and how was my punishment
The people of Noah, and the confederates after them, have brought the charge of imposture before these Meccans: each nation schemed against their apostle to lay violent hold on him, and disputed with vain words to refute the truth. Therefore did I lay violent hold on them; and how great was my chastisement
The people of Noah, and the confederated infidels which were after them, accused their respective prophets of imposture before these; and each nation hatched ill designs against their apostle, that they might get him into their power; and they disputed with vain reasoning; that they might thereby invalidate the truth: Wherefore I chastised them; and how severe was my punishment

Thus the sentence of your Lord became realized against those who disbelieve, that they are to be inmates of the Fire.
Thus was the word of thy Lord concerning those who disbelieve fulfilled: That they are owners of the Fire
Thus was the sentence of thy Lord due against those who misbelieved, that they are the fellows of the Fire
Thus is it that thy Lord's sentence, that inmates shall they be of the fire, was accomplished upon the infidels
Thus hath the sentence of thy Lord justly passed on the unbelievers; that they shall be the inhabitants of hell fire

Lo! (on that day) those who disbelieve are informed by proclamation: Verily Allah's abhorrence is more terrible than your abhorrence one of another, when ye were called unto the faith but did refuse
Verily, those who misbelieve shall be cried out to, 'Surely, God's hatred is greater than your hatred of each other when ye were called unto the faith and misbelieved
But to the infidels shall a voice cry, "Surely the hatred of God is more grievous than your hatred of yourselves, when ye were called to the faith, and remained unbelievers
But the infidels, at the day of judgment, shall hear a voice crying unto them, verily the hatred of God towards you is more grievous than your hatred towards yourselves: Since ye were called unto the faith, and would not believe

And those who, before them, had settled in the homeland, and had accepted faith. They love those who emigrated to them, and find no hesitation in their hearts in helping them. They give them priority over themselves, even if they themselves are needy. Whoever is protected from his natural greed-it is they who are the successful.
Those who entered the city and the faith before them love those who flee unto them for refuge, and find in their breasts no need for that which hath been given them, but prefer (the fugitives) above themselves though poverty become their lot. And whoso is saved from his own avarice - such are they who are successful
And those who were settled in the abode and the faith before them, love those who fled to them; and they do not find in their breasts a need of what has been given to them; preferring them to themselves, even though there be poverty amongst them; and whoso is preserved from his own covetousness, these are the prosperous
They of Medina who had been in possession of their abodes and embraced the faith before them, cherish those who take refuge with them; and they find not in their breasts any desire for what hath fallen to their share: they prefer them before themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And with such as are preserved from their own covetousness shall it be well
And they who quietly possessed the town of Medina, and professed the faith without molestation, before them, love him who hath fled unto them, and find in their breasts no want of that which is given the Mohajerin, but prefer them before themselves, although there be indigence among them. And whoso is preserved from the covetousness of his own soul, those shall surely prosper

Ibrahimi ishte vërtet i dhembshur e i butë.

9:113 113. (Nedera) Pranašui ir tiems, kurie tiki, prašyti Allaho Atleidimo Mušrikūn (daugiadieviams, stabmeldžiams, pagonims, netikintiesiems Allaho Vienumą), net jei jie būtų iš giminaičių, po to, kai jiems tapo aišku, kad jie yra Ugnies gyventojai (nes jie mirė netikėdami).

God has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties in exchange for Paradise. They fight in God's way, and they kill and get killed. It is a promise binding on Him in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Quran. And who is more true to his promise than God? So rejoice in making such an exchange-that is the supreme triumph.
Lo! Allah hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs: they shall fight in the way of Allah and shall slay and be slain. Rejoice then in your bargain that ye have made, for that is the supreme triumph
Verily, God hath bought of the believers their persons and their wealth, for the paradise they are to have; they shall fight in the way of God, and they shall slay and be slain: promised in truth, in the law and the gospel and the Qur'an;- and who is more faithful to His covenant than God ? Be ye glad then in the covenant which ye have made with Him, for that is the mighty happiness
Verily, of the faithful hath God bought their persons and their substance, on condition of Paradise for them in return: on the path of God shall they fight, and slay, and be slain: a Promise for this is pledged in the Law, and in the Evangel, and in the Koran - and who more faithful, in to his engagement than God? Rejoice, therefore, in the contract that ye have contracted: for this shall be the great bliss
Verily God hath purchased of the true believers their souls, and their substance, promising them the enjoyment of paradise; on condition that they fight for the cause of God: Whether they slay or be slain, the promise for the same is assuredly due by the law, and the gospel, and the Koran. And who performeth his contract more faithfully than God? Rejoice therefore in the contract which ye have made. This shall be great happiness

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Obedience and upright speech. Then, when the matter is settled, being true to God would have been better for them.
Obedience and a civil word. Then, when the matter is determined, if they are loyal to Allah it will be well for them
Preferable for them were obedience and a reasonable speech! But when the matter is determined on, then if they believed God it were better for them
And if, when the command for war is issued, they are true to God, it will be assuredly best for them
But obedience would be more eligible for them, and to speak that which is convenient. And when the command is firmly established, if they give credit unto God, it will be better for them
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:159, 40:7-9, 59:10, 9:113-114, 9:80, 47:19, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - ask + forgiveness + for + them; forgive + us + and + our + brethren + who + were + before + us; ask + forgiveness + for + thy + sin + and + for + believing + men + and + believing + women; they + ask + forgiveness + for + those + who + believe. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 10 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:64 - on-topic and close; 11:61 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?; 13:6 - matched incidentally; 24:62 - about permission to depart; 41:6 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an mean that the Prophet is 'only a man'?; 42:5 - near-identical to 40:7, though notable because it says the angels ask for ALL on earth; 60:4 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about following the Prophet's example?; 60:12 - the women's pledge; 63:5 - about the hypocrites' refusal; 63:6 - near-identical to 9:80.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
