And when it is said to them, "Do not make trouble on earth," they say, "We are only reformers."
What does the Qur'an say about corruption in the land (fasad)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:11–12 And when it is said unto them: MAKE NOT MISCHIEF IN THE EARTH, they say: WE ARE PEACEMAKERS ONLY. Are not they indeed the mischief-makers? But they perceive not. In as ONE PASSAGE because the denial is the point - the corrupters describe themselves as reformers - and 2:12 is the verdict.
- 02 2:205 And when he turneth away, his effort in the land is to MAKE MISCHIEF THEREIN AND TO DESTROY THE CROPS AND THE CATTLE; and God loveth not mischief. In because it is the one verse that says what the corruption consists of, and the two things named are the food supply and the animals.
- 03 28:4 Lo, PHARAOH EXALTED HIMSELF IN THE EARTH AND MADE ITS PEOPLE CASTES. A tribe among them he oppressed, killing their sons and sparing their women. Lo, he was of those who work corruption. In because it identifies corruption with a political order - division into castes, and selective killing - rather than with private vice. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about tyranny - Pharaoh as the archetype? and What does the Qur'an say about standing up for the oppressed?, each with its own reason.
- 04 47:22–23 Would ye then, if ye were given the command, WORK CORRUPTION IN THE LAND AND SEVER YOUR TIES OF KINSHIP? Such are they whom God curseth so that He deafeneth them and maketh blind their eyes. In as ONE PASSAGE because it links corruption to the breaking of kinship and states the consequence.
- 05 13:25 Those who break the covenant of God after ratifying it, and sever that which God hath commanded should be joined, AND MAKE MISCHIEF IN THE EARTH - theirs is the curse and theirs the ill abode. In because it lists the three together, which is how the text usually frames the offence.
- 06 2:27 Those who break the covenant of God after ratifying it, and sever that which God ordered to be joined, and make mischief in the earth - such are they who are the losers. In because it is the same triad stated earlier, and the repetition establishes the formula.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The word the four translators render as corruption, mischief and disorder is one of the Qur'an's central political terms, and the verses that use it are more specific than the abstraction suggests.
2:11-12 is the most quotable pair in the book on this subject, and it is about self-description. Told MAKE NOT MISCHIEF IN THE EARTH, they answer: WE ARE PEACEMAKERS ONLY - and the text replies that they are indeed the mischief-makers, but do not perceive it. Corruption in this passage is what its authors call reform.
2:205 is the only verse that itemises. The man turns away and works to ruin the land - DESTROYING THE CROPS AND THE CATTLE. Food and livestock. It is not an abstract moral state; it is damage to what people live on.
28:4 attaches it to a system of government. Pharaoh exalted himself and MADE THE PEOPLE INTO CASTES, oppressing one group and killing their sons - and the verse concludes: he was of those who work corruption. That is the clearest statement in the text that a political order can be the thing described.
2:27, 13:25 and 47:22 all bind corruption to two other offences in a fixed triad: breaking a ratified covenant, SEVERING WHAT GOD COMMANDED TO BE JOINED, and spreading corruption. Whatever the second item covers - kinship is named explicitly at 47:22 - the text treats the breaking of bonds and the ruin of the land as one syndrome.
The related material on land and sea is carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about corruption appearing 'on land and sea'?, and on oppression by What does the Qur'an say about oppression (zulm) and its consequences?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:11–12, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

And remember God during the designated days. But whoever hurries on in two days commits no wrong, and whoever stays on commits no wrong-provided he maintains righteousness. And obey God, and know that to Him you will be gathered.
Remember Allah through the appointed days. Then whoso hasteneth (his departure) by two days, it is no sin for him, and whoso delayeth, it is no sin for him; that is for him who wardeth off (evil). Be careful of your duty to Allah, and know that unto Him ye will be gathered
Remember God for a certain number of days; but whoso hastens off in two days, it is no sin to him, and he who lingers on it is no sin to him,- for him who fears. So fear ye God and know that unto Him shall ye be gathered
Bear God in mind during the stated days: but if any haste away in two days, it shall be no fault in him: And if any tarry longer, it shall be no fault in him, if he fear God. Fear God, then, and know that to Him shall ye be gathered

Among the people is he whose speech about the worldly life impresses you, and he calls God to witness what is in his heart, while he is the most hostile of adversaries.
And of mankind there is he whoso conversation on the life of this world pleaseth thee (Muhammad), and he calleth Allah to witness as to that which is in his heart; yet he is the most rigid of opponents
There is among men one whose speech about the life of this world pleases thee, and he calls on God to witness what is in his heart; yet is he most fierce in opposition unto thee

And when it is said to him, "Fear God," the pride of sin seizeth him: but he shall have his fill of Hell; and right wretched the couch

Verily, Pharaoh was lofty in the land and made the people thereof sects; one party of them he weakened, slaughtering their sons and letting their women live. Verily, he was of the despoilers
Now Pharaoh lifted himself up in the earth, and divided his people into parties: one portion of them he brought low - He slew their male children, and let their females only live; for he was one of those who wrought disorders

Those who believe say, "If only a chapter is sent down." Yet when a decisive chapter is sent down, and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those in whose hearts is sickness looking at you with the look of someone fainting at death. So woe to them!

Obedience and upright speech. Then, when the matter is settled, being true to God would have been better for them.
Obedience and a civil word. Then, when the matter is determined, if they are loyal to Allah it will be well for them

And if, when the command for war is issued, they are true to God, it will be assuredly best for them

Those who reverted after the guidance became clear to them-Satan has enticed them, and has given them latitude.
Lo! those who turn back after the guidance hath been manifested unto them, Satan hath seduced them, and He giveth them the rein
Verily, those who turn their backs after the guidance that has been manifested to them - Satan induces them, but (God) lets them go on for a time
But as to those who return to their errors after "the guidance" hath been made plain to them, Satan shall beguile them, and fill them with his suggestions
Verily they who turn their backs, after the true direction is made manifest unto them; Satan shall prepare their wickedness for them, and God shall bear with them for a time

And give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds; that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with fruit therefrom as sustenance, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before," and they will be given the like of it. And they will have pure spouses therein, and they will abide therein forever.
And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) unto those who believe and do good works; that theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow; as often as they are regaled with food of the fruit thereof, they say: this is what was given us aforetime; and it is given to them in resemblance. There for them are pure companions; there for ever they abide
But bear the glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow; whenever they are provided with fruit therefrom they say, 'This is what we were provided with before,' and they shall be provided with the like; and there are pure wives for them therein, and they shall dwell therein for aye
But announce to those who believe and do the things that are right, that for them are gardens 'neath which the rivers flow! So oft as they are fed therefrom with fruit for sustenance, they shall say, "This same was our sustenance of old:" And they shall have its like given to them. Therein shall they have wives of perfect purity, and therein shall they abide for ever
But bear good tidings unto those who believe, and do good works, that they shall have gardens watered by rivers; so often as they eat of the fruit thereof for sustenance, they shall say, this is what we have formerly eaten of; and they shall be supplied with several sorts of fruit having a mutual resemblance to one another. There shall they enjoy wives subject to no impurity, and there shall they continue for ever

God does not shy away from making an example of a gnat, or something above it. As for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did God intend by this example?" He leads astray many thereby, and He guides many thereby; but He misleads thereby only the evildoers.
Lo! Allah disdaineth not to coin the similitude even of a gnat. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: What doth Allah wish (to teach) by such a similitude? He misleadeth many thereby, and He guideth many thereby; and He misleadeth thereby only miscreants
Why, God is not ashamed to set forth a parable of a gnat, or anything beyond; and as for those who believe, they know that it is truth from the Lord; but as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What is it that God means by this as a parable? He leads astray many and He guides many;' - but He leads astray only the evildoers
Verily God is not ashamed to set forth as well the instance of a gnat as of any nobler object: for as to those who have believed, they know it to be the truth from their Lord; but as to the unbelievers, they will say, "What meaneth God by this comparison?" Many will He mislead by such parables and many guide: but none will He mislead thereby except the wicked
Moreover God will not be ashamed to propound in a parable a gnat, or even a more despicable thing; for they who believe will know it to be the truth from their Lord; but the unbelievers will say, What meaneth God by this parable? He will thereby mislead many, and will direct many thereby: but He will not mislead any thereby, except the transgressors

How can you deny God, when you were dead and He gave you life, then He will put you to death, then He will bring you to life, then to Him you will be returned?
How disbelieve ye in Allah when ye were dead and He gave life to you! Then He will give you death, then life again, and then unto Him ye will return
How can ye disbelieve in God, when ye were dead and He made you alive, and then He will kill you and then make you alive again, and then to Him will ye return
How can ye withhold faith from God? Ye were dead and He gave you life; next He will cause you to die; next He will restore you to life: next shall ye return to Him
How is it that ye believe not in God? Since ye were dead, and He gave you life; He will hereafter cause you to die, and will again restore you to life; then shall ye return unto Him

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:11-12, 2:205, 28:4, 47:22-23, 13:25, 2:27, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - work + corruption + in + the + earth; make + mischief + in + the + earth; loveth + not + corrupters; loveth + not + mischief; seek + not + corruption + in + the + land. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 5 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:264 - matched incidentally; carried on charity elsewhere; 5:64 - carried by the study Are God's 'hand' and 'face' in the Qur'an literal or figurative?; 17:4 - a prophecy about the Children of Israel; 22:38 - matched incidentally; 28:77 - on-topic and part of the Korah passage.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
