He commands you to do evil and vice, and to say about God what you do not know.
What does the Qur'an say about speaking about God without knowledge?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:169 He enjoineth upon you only the evil and the foul, and THAT YE SHOULD TELL CONCERNING GOD THAT WHICH YE KNOW NOT. In because it lists speaking about God without knowledge alongside evil and indecency as one of the three things Satan commands, which is the strongest placement it gets.
- 02 7:33 Say: my Lord forbiddeth only indecencies, such of them as are apparent and such as are within, and sin and wrongful oppression, and that ye associate with God that for which no warrant hath been revealed, AND THAT YE TELL CONCERNING GOD THAT WHICH YE KNOW NOT. In because it is a closed list of what is forbidden and this is the last and widest item on it.
- 03 16:116 AND SPEAK NOT, CONCERNING THAT WHICH YOUR OWN TONGUES QUALIFY AS CLEAN OR UNCLEAN, THE FALSEHOOD: THIS IS LAWFUL AND THIS IS FORBIDDEN - so that ye invent a lie against God. Lo, those who invent a lie against God will not succeed. In because it names the specific form: declaring things lawful and forbidden on your own authority. It is the most directly applicable verse in the set.
- 04 10:59 Say: have ye considered what provision God hath sent down for you, HOW YE HAVE MADE OF IT LAWFUL AND UNLAWFUL? Say: hath God permitted you, or do ye invent a lie concerning God? In because it puts the same charge as a question, and the question has only two possible answers.
- 05 5:103 God hath not appointed anything in the nature of a Bahirah or a Sa'ibah or a Wasilah or a Hami, BUT THOSE WHO DISBELIEVE INVENT A LIE AGAINST GOD, and most of them have no sense. In because it names four specific inherited practices and says flatly that God appointed none of them - a concrete instance of the general charge.
- 06 17:36 FOLLOW NOT THAT WHEREOF THOU HAST NO KNOWLEDGE. Lo, the hearing and the sight and the heart - of each of these it will be asked. In because it generalises beyond speech about God to any claim, and because it makes the faculties themselves answerable. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about verifying news before acting on it?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and the charge they make is narrower and more useful than it first appears.
2:169 and 7:33 both put it in a LIST. In 2:169 it is one of three things Satan enjoins - evil, indecency, and telling about God what you do not know. In 7:33 it is the last item in a closed list of what God has forbidden, after indecency, sin, oppression and associating partners. Both lists end on it, and in both it is the widest item.
16:116 says what the fault actually looks like, and it is very specific: speaking the falsehood THIS IS LAWFUL AND THIS IS FORBIDDEN, on the strength of what your own tongue declares. Not error in belief - unauthorised legislation. 10:59 puts the same charge as a question with two exits: has God permitted you, or are you inventing a lie about Him?
5:103 gives a worked example, and it is worth reading for what it shows about the text's method. Four named practices about camels - Bahirah, Sa'ibah, Wasilah, Hami, terms all four translators simply transliterate because there is no English for them - and the flat verdict: GOD APPOINTED NONE OF THEM.
17:36 widens it past religion altogether: follow not that whereof you have no knowledge - and then makes the hearing, the sight and the heart each answerable for what it took in.
This study bears directly on how this platform works. The reason no , no and no fiqh is quoted anywhere in these files is a rights audit; but 16:116 is the reason this platform may not paper over that absence with a plausible-sounding answer.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:169, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Those who followed will say, "If only we can have another chance, we will disown them, as they disowned us." Thus God will show them their deeds, as regrets to them, and they will not come out of the Fire.

those who followed shall say, 'Had we but another turn, then would we clear ourselves of them as they have cleared themselves of us.' So will God show them their works; for them are sighs, and they shall not come forth from out the fire

The parable of those who disbelieve is that of someone who calls upon someone who hears nothing except screaming and yelling. Deaf, dumb, and blind-they do not understand.
The likeness of those who disbelieve (in relation to the messenger) is as the likeness of one who calleth unto that which heareth naught except a shout and cry. Deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they have no sense
The likeness of those who misbelieve is as the likeness of him who shouts to that which hears him not, save only a call and a cry; deafness, dumbness, blindness, and they shall not understand

И не поводи се за оним што не знаш! И слух и вид и разум - за све то ће, заиста, да се одговара.

And do not go near the orphan's property, except with the best of intentions, until he has reached his maturity. And honor your pledge, because the pledge involves responsibility.
Come not near the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better till he come to strength; and keep the covenant. Lo! of the covenant it will be asked
And draw not near to the wealth of the orphan, save to improve it, until he reaches the age of puberty, and fulfil your compacts; verily, a compact is ever enquired of
And touch not the substance of the orphan, unless in an upright way, till he attain his age of strength: And perform your covenant; verily the covenant shall be enquired of
And meddle not with the substance of the orphan, unless it be to improve it, until he attain his age of strength: And perform your covenant; for the performance of your covenant shall be inquired into hereafter

And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with accurate scales. That is fair, and the best determination.
Fill the measure when ye measure, and weigh with a right balance; that is meet, and better in the end
And give full measure when ye measure out, and weigh with a right balance; that is better and a fairer determination
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with just balance. This will be better, and fairest for settlement
And give full measure, when you measure ought; and weigh with a just balance. This will be better, and more easy for determining every man's due

And do not walk proudly on earth. You can neither pierce the earth, nor can you match the mountains in height.
And walk not in the earth exultant. Lo! thou canst not rend the earth, nor canst thou stretch to the height of the hills
And walk not on the earth proudly; verily, thou canst not cleave the earth, and thou shalt not reach the mountains in height
And walk not proudly on the earth, for thou canst not cleave the earth, neither shalt thou reach to the mountains in height
Walk not proudly in the land, for thou canst not cleave the earth, neither shalt thou equal the mountains in stature

The evil of all these is disliked by your Lord.
The evil of all that is hateful in the sight of thy Lord
All this is ever evil in the sight of your Lord and abhorred
All this is evil; odious to thy Lord
All this is evil, and abominable in the sight of thy Lord

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:169, 7:33, 16:116, 10:59, 5:103, 17:36, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - say + concerning + god + know + not; tell + concerning + god + know + not; forge + lie + against + god; ascribe + god + know + not; pursue + not + knowledge + not. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 13 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:80 - an example of the fault rather than a statement about it; 2:113 - mutual dismissal; it belongs to the Other faiths theme; 3:75 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about keeping trusts and promises?; 3:78 - distortion of scripture, taken up by the studies Does the Qur'an say earlier scriptures were changed (tahrif)? and What does the Qur'an say about those who twist its meaning?; 4:176 - an inheritance ruling; 5:48 - revelation; 7:28 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about following forefathers blindly?; 10:60 - near-identical to 10:69; 10:68 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an teach about God's oneness (tawhid)?; 10:69 - near-identical to 16:116's closing clause; 10:104 - a declaration of the Prophet's position; 13:33 - carried by the study What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an?; 20:61 - near-identical warning, spoken by Moses to the magicians.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
