You and what you worship besides God are fuel for Hell. You will descend into it.
Does 21:98 put Jesus, whom Christians worship, in hell?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 21:98 Itani has "You and what you worship besides God are fuel for Hell". Pickthall adds a bracket, "Lo! ye (idolaters)", and Sale has "O men of Mecca, and the idols which ye worship". Itani, Palmer and Rodwell print no name for those addressed or for what they worship.
- 02 21:99 Pickthall has "If these had been gods they would not have come thither". The verse speaks of what is worshipped as "these".
- 03 21:101 This verse sets a group apart from Hell. Itani has "these will be kept away from it", and Pickthall has "they will be far removed from thence". It names no one.
- 04 43:57–59 At 43:57 Itani has "when the son of Mary was cited as an example", and at 43:58 Itani has "Are our gods better, or he?" At 43:59 Pickthall has "He is nothing but a slave on whom We bestowed favour".
- 05 5:116–117 Pickthall has "Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah?" as the question put to Jesus, and "It was not mine to utter that to which I had no right" as his answer.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question asks whether 21:98 includes Jesus, whom Christians worship. There Itani has "You and what you worship besides God are fuel for Hell".
21:98 names no one. Neither Jesus nor the son of Mary is named at 21:98 to 21:101 in any of the five. Pickthall's bracket reads those addressed as "(idolaters)", and Sale has "the idols" for what they worship.
At 21:99 Pickthall has "If these had been gods". At 21:101 a group is set apart: Itani has "these will be kept away from it". That verse names no one either.
43:57-59 prints a scene in which the son of Mary is cited and his hearers ask whether their gods are better. At 43:59 Pickthall has "a slave", where Itani, Palmer, Rodwell and Sale call him a servant. At 5:116-117 Jesus is asked whether he told people to take him and his mother as gods, and he answers that he had no right to say it.
The five print no sentence that places Jesus among those of 21:98, and none that names him in 21:101. How these verses are joined beyond what they print rests on commentary, which is outside this platform and not shown here.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 21:98, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And when Allah saith: O Jesus, son of Mary! Didst thou say unto mankind: Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah? he saith: Be glorified! It was not mine to utter that to which I had no right. If I used to say it, then Thou knewest it. Thou knowest what is in my mind, and I know not what is in Thy Mind. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Knower of Things Hidden
And when God said, 'O Jesus, son of Mary! is it thou who didst say to men, take me and my mother for two gods, beside God?' He said, 'I celebrate Thy praise! what ails me that I should say what I have no right to? If I had said it, Thou wouldst have known it; Thou knowest what is in my soul, but I know not what is in Thy soul; verily, Thou art one who knoweth the unseen
And when God shall say - "O Jesus, Son of Mary: hast thou said unto mankind - 'Take me and my mother as two Gods, beside God?"' He shall say - "Glory be unto Thee! it is not for me to say that which I know to be not the truth; had I said that, verily thou wouldest have known it: Thou knowest what is in me, but I know not what is in Thee; for Thou well knowest things unseen
And when God will say, 'O Jesus, son of Mary, didst thou say to men, 'Take me and my mother for two gods beside God?' he will answer, 'Holy art Thou, I could never say that which I had no right. If I had said it, Thou wouldst have surely known it. Thou knowest what is in my mind, and I know not what is in Thy mind. It is Thou alone Who art the Knower of all hidden things

5:116 E quando Allāh disse: “O ‘Īsa, figlio di Maryem ﴿يَا عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَم﴾, hai detto tu alla gente: ‘Utilizzate me e mia madre come due divinità all’infuori di Allāh?’”

Hakika Wewe ndiye Mwenye kujua vyema yale yaliyofichikana.
Sen, her şeye hakkıyla şahitsin.”

God will say, "This is a Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." They will have Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will remain forever. God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is the great attainment.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question rests on 21:98, so the set starts there, with 21:99 and 21:101, which follow it and say who goes down and who is kept away. 43:57-59 is carried because it prints the son of Mary cited and set beside 'our gods'. 5:116-117 is carried because it prints Jesus asked whether he told people to take him and his mother as gods. A probe for 'Jesus|son of Mary|Messiah' on all five renderings returns no line at 21:98 to 21:101. This study does not say how these verses have been joined by commentary; that layer is outside this platform.
