And for their saying, "We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of God." In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did. Indeed, those who differ about him are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of assumptions. Certainly, they did not kill him.
Does the Qur'an say Jesus will return, or that he died?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:157–158 This is the verse the question is put to. Itani has "they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him", and then "God raised him up to Himself"; Pickthall has "Allah took him up unto Himself".
- 02 4:159 All five print "before his death". Itani has "There is none from the People of the Scripture but will believe in him before his death"; the English does not say whose death is meant.
- 03 3:55 The renderings divide on the first verb. Itani has "I am terminating your life, and raising you to Me", and Rodwell and Sale have "I will cause thee to die". Pickthall has "I am gathering thee and causing thee to ascend unto Me".
- 04 5:117 Jesus speaks to God of the time after he was among his people. Itani has "when You took me to Yourself", and Pickthall has "when Thou tookest me"; Palmer and Rodwell also print a taking, and none of these four prints a word for dying there.
- 05 43:57 Itani has "when the son of Mary was cited as an example". This names whom the passage that runs to 43:61 is about.
- 06 43:61 Itani has "He is a portent of the Hour", and Rodwell has "he shall be a sign of the last hour". Pickthall differs: "there is knowledge of the Hour", with no "he".
- 07 19:33 Jesus speaks of his own life: Itani has "the day I die", and Rodwell has "the day I shall die, and the day I shall be raised to life".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Of the 168 rows of the five that print Jesus, Messiah or son of Mary, none prints that he will return in those words. The word "return" appears beside his name only at 3:55, addressed to all.
At 4:157-158 the five print that they did not kill him or crucify him. Itani has "God raised him up to Himself".
On his death the renderings divide. At 3:55 Itani has "I am terminating your life" and Rodwell has "I will cause thee to die". Pickthall has "I am gathering thee" there. At 5:117 Itani has "when You took me to Yourself", Pickthall has "when Thou tookest me", and Palmer and Rodwell also print a taking rather than a death. At 19:33 all five print the day he dies alongside the day he is raised.
Two verses are read toward a future role. At 4:159 the five print "before his death" without saying whose death. At 43:61, in a passage about the son of Mary, Itani has "He is a portent of the Hour", while Pickthall has "there is knowledge of the Hour".
So the text prints a raising to God at 4:158, death wording that differs by rendering, and a sign of the Hour that most renderings tie to him. It does not print, in any of the five, a statement that he will come back.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:157–158, widening across 7 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

7 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah's messenger - they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain
and for their saying, 'Verily, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, the apostle of God'.... but they did not kill him, and they did not crucify him, but a similitude was made for them. And verily, those who differ about him are in doubt concerning him; they have no knowledge concerning him, but only follow an opinion. They did not kill him, for sure
And for their saying, "Verily we have slain the Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, an Apostle of God." Yet they slew him not, and they crucified him not, but they had only his likeness. And they who differed about him were in doubt concerning him: No sure knowledge had they about him, but followed only an opinion, and they did not really slay him
and have said, verily we have slain Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the apostle of God; yet they slew him not, neither crucified him, but he was represented by one in his likeness; and verily they who disagreed concerning him, were in a doubt as to this matter, and had no sure knowledge thereof, but followed only an uncertain opinion. They did not really kill him

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The probe 'Jesus|Messiah|son of Mary' returns 168 rows at 37 verses. Of those rows, only the five at 3:55 also print the word "return", and there it is God's word to all: "to Me is your return". The anchors are the verse the question is put to (4:157-158), the verses whose wording bears on his death (3:55, 4:159, 5:117, 19:33), and the verse read as a sign of the Hour, with the verse that names its subject (43:57, 43:61). This study does not add any account from outside these five renderings.
