O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and do not say about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of God, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, "Three." Refrain-it is better for you. God is only one God. Glory be to Him-that He should have a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and God is a sufficient Protector.
What does the Qur'an say about the Trinity?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:171 O People of the Scripture, do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning God save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of God, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, AND SAY NOT THREE - CEASE! It is better for you. God is only One God. In because it is the fullest statement, it contains the actual prohibition, and it opens with a warning against EXAGGERATION rather than against belief as such.
- 02 5:73 They surely disbelieve who say: GOD IS THE THIRD OF THREE, when there is no God save the One God. In because it is the second formulation and the phrase differs from 4:171's - which is part of the difficulty.
- 03 5:116 And when God saith: O Jesus, son of Mary, DIDST THOU SAY UNTO MANKIND: TAKE ME AND MY MOTHER FOR TWO GODS BESIDE GOD? he saith: be glorified! It was not mine to utter that to which I had no right. In because the triad the verse questions is God, Jesus and MARY - which is not the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, and a reader must be able to see that.
- 04 5:72 They surely disbelieve who say: God is the Messiah, son of Mary. THE MESSIAH HIMSELF SAID: O CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, WORSHIP GOD, MY LORD AND YOUR LORD. In because the argument made is from Jesus' own reported words rather than from doctrine.
- 05 19:88–92 And they say: the Beneficent hath taken unto Himself a son. Assuredly ye utter a disastrous thing, whereby almost the heavens are torn, and the earth is split asunder and the mountains fall in ruins... IT IS NOT MEET FOR THE BENEFICENT THAT HE SHOULD CHOOSE A SON. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the most violent language in the Qur'an on the subject and its objection is to sonship specifically.
- 06 6:101 Itani has "how can He have a son when He never had a companion". Pickthall has "a child" where Itani, Palmer and Rodwell have a son. It is here because it rejects a son by asking how there could be one with no consort.
- 07 39:4 Pickthall has "If Allah had willed to choose a son, He could have chosen what He would of that which He hath created". It is here because it argues from choice rather than from birth: what God would choose would be something He created.
- 08 112:3 Rodwell has "He begetteth not, and He is not begotten", and the other four print the same two clauses. It is here because it states the matter in the fewest words and without argument.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an rejects something, and a careful reader should be able to see exactly what it names.
4:171 contains the prohibition: SAY NOT THREE - CEASE. And it is framed by two things worth noticing. It opens by telling the People of the Scripture not to EXAGGERATE in their religion - the fault named is excess rather than the religion itself. And in the same verse Jesus is given three titles: a messenger of God, HIS WORD which He conveyed to Mary, and A SPIRIT FROM HIM. The verse that forbids saying three is the same verse that calls Jesus God's word and a spirit from Him.
5:73 uses a different phrase - GOD IS THE THIRD OF THREE - and rejects that.
5:116 is where honesty is required. The question put to Jesus is: DIDST THOU SAY: TAKE ME AND MY MOTHER FOR TWO GODS BESIDE GOD? The three named there are God, Jesus and MARY. That is not the doctrine of the Trinity as any Christian creed states it. Whether the verse addresses a particular group's belief, or is rejecting a category of error rather than reporting a creed, is exactly the sort of question that needs the historical layer - which is not built - and the commentators, none of whom has cleared the rights audit.
19:88-92 shows what the text objects to most violently, and it is SONSHIP: they say the Beneficent has taken a son, and the heavens are almost torn and the mountains fall in ruins at it. The objection is to God begetting.
Three more verses give the grounds of that objection, each in a different form. 6:101 argues from the absence of a consort, and Rodwell has "when He hath no consort, should He have a son". Itani has "when He never had a companion", and Palmer has "no female companion". 39:4 argues from choice, and Pickthall has "If Allah had willed to choose a son, He could have chosen what He would of that which He hath created". 112:3 states it without argument, and Rodwell has "He begetteth not, and He is not begotten".
None of these three names a creed or a group. They reject a son, a consort and begetting, and they stop there.
So: the Qur'an forbids saying three, rejects God being the Messiah, rejects a triad of God-Jesus-Mary, and rejects sonship in the strongest terms. Whether it is describing the Nicene doctrine is a question this platform is not equipped to answer, and it says so.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:171, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation
8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Skriftens folk!

The Messiah does not disdain to be a servant of God, nor do the favored angels. Whoever disdains His worship, and is too arrogant-He will round them up to Himself altogether.
The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angels. Whoso scorneth His service and is proud, all such will He assemble unto Him

E quando Allāh disse: “O ‘Īsa, figlio di Maryem ﴿يَا عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَم﴾, hai detto tu alla gente: ‘Utilizzate me e mia madre come due divinità all’infuori di Allāh?’” Disse: “Gloria Tua! Non potrei mai dire ciò! Se io lo avessi detto, Tu l’avresti saputo: Tu sai ciò che è nel mio animo, e io non so ciò che è nel Tuo! Sei in verità Tu il Conoscitore dell’Ignoto.
116. Ir (atminkite) kai Allahas sakys (Prikėlimo Dieną): „Isa (Jėzau), Marjamos (Marijos) sūnau, argi tu sakei žmonėms: „Garbinkite mane ir mano motiną kaip du dievus šalia Allaho?“ Jis sakys: „Šlovė Tau! Negalėjau aš sakyti to, ką (sakyti) aš neturėjau teisės.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.
Şüphesiz, “Allah, Meryem oğlu Mesih’in kendisidir” diyenler kâfir olmuştur. Mesih şöyle demiştir: "Ey İsrailoğulları! Benim Rabbim ve sizin Rabbiniz olan Allah’a ibadet edin. Kim Allah’a şirk koşarsa, Allah ona Cennet'i haram kılar, onun yeri Cehennem olur. Zalimler için hiçbir yardımcı yoktur."

Is not to God that sincere faith is due? As for those who take guardians besides Him, "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to God." God will judge between them regarding their differences. God does not guide the lying blasphemer.
Surely pure religion is for Allah only. And those who choose protecting friends beside Him (say): We worship them only that they may bring us near unto Allah. Lo! Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Lo! Allah guideth not him who is a liar, an ingrate
Aye! God's is the sincere religion: and those who take beside Him patrons - 'We do not serve them save that they may bring us near to God - 'Verily, God will judge between them concerning that whereon they do dispute. Verily, God guides not him who is a misbelieving liar
Is not a sincere worship due to God? But they who take others beside him as lords saying, "We serve them only that they may bring us near to God" - God will judge between them and the faithful, concerning that wherein they are at variance. Verily God will not guide him who is a liar, an infidel
Ought not the pure religion to be exhibited unto God? But as to those who take other patrons besides Him, saying, we worship them only that they may bring us nearer unto God; verily God will judge between them concerning that wherein they disagree. Surely God will not direct him who is a liar, or ungrateful

He created the heavens and the earth with reason. He wraps the night around the day, and He wraps the day around the night. And He regulates the sun and the moon, each running along a specific course. He is indeed the Almighty, the Forgiver.
He hath created the heavens and the earth with truth. He maketh night to succeed day, and He maketh day to succeed night, and He constraineth the sun and the moon to give service, each running on for an appointed term. Is not He the Mighty, the Forgiver
He created the heavens and the earth in truth! It is He who clothes the day with night; and clothes the night with day; and subjects the sun and the moon, each one runs on to an appointed time; aye! He is the mighty, the forgiving
For truth hath he created the Heavens and the Earth: It is of Him that the night returneth upon the day and that the day returneth upon the night: and He controlleth the sun and the moon so that each speedeth to an appointed goal. Is He not the Mighty, the Gracious
He hath created the heavens and the earth with truth: He causeth the night to succeed the day, and He causeth the day to succeed the night, and He obligeth the sun and the moon to perform their services; each of them hasteneth to an appointed period. Is not He the mighty, the forgiver of sins

He created you from one person, then made from it its mate, and brought down livestock for you-eight kinds in pairs. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, in successive formations, in a triple darkness. Such is God, your Lord. His is the kingdom. There is no god but He. So what made you deviate?
He created you from one being, then from that (being) He made its mate; and He hath provided for you of cattle eight kinds. He created you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in a threefold gloom. Such is Allah, your Lord. His is the Sovereignty. There is no Allah save Him. How then are ye turned away
He created you from one soul; then He made from it its mate; and He sent down upon you of the cattle four pairs! He creates you in the bellies of your mothers,- creation after creation, in three darknesses. That is God for you! His is the kingdom, there is no god but He; how then can ye be turned away
He created you all of one man, from whom He afterwards formed his wife; and of cattle He hath sent down to you four pairs. In the wombs of your mothers did He create you by creation upon creation in triple darkness. It is He who is God your Lord: the kingdom is His: There is no God but He. How then are ye so turned aside from Him
He created you of one man, and afterwards out of him formed his wife: And He hath bestowed on you four pair of cattle. He formeth you in the wombs of your mothers, by several gradual formations, within three vails of darkness. This is God your Lord: His is the kingdom: There is no God but He. Why therefore are ye turned aside from the worship of Him to idolatry

Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:171, 5:73, 5:116, 5:72, 19:88-92, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for the first five; the three verses added beside them, 6:101, 39:4 and 112:3, were read in all five translations, Itani included.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - say + not + three; third + of + three; god + is + the + messiah + son + of + mary; take + me + and + my + mother + for + two + gods. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Three verses were added because they give the grounds on which the text rejects a son. A search of all five translations for consort returned 6:101 in three of the five, and four other verses in one rendering each, which are not carried. A search for begets or begetteth returned 112:3 in all five, and one other verse in one rendering, which is not about God and is not carried. A search for 'choose a son', 'chosen what' or 'selected from' returned 39:4 in all five, and 19:92 in one, which is already carried.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
