The Angels said, "O Mary, God gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, well-esteemed in this world and the next, and one of the nearest.
Is Jesus called 'Messiah' and 'Word of God' in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:45 When the angels said: O Mary, God giveth thee glad tidings of A WORD FROM HIM, WHOSE NAME IS THE MESSIAH, JESUS SON OF MARY, ILLUSTRIOUS IN THE WORLD AND THE HEREAFTER, AND ONE OF THOSE BROUGHT NEAR. In because it contains four titles in a single verse and is the fullest answer the question has.
- 02 4:171 The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, WAS ONLY A MESSENGER OF GOD, AND HIS WORD WHICH HE CONVEYED UNTO MARY, AND A SPIRIT FROM HIM. So believe in God and His messengers, and say not Three. In because the same verse that gives him the highest titles is the verse that forbids saying three - which is the whole shape of the Qur'an's position. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the Trinity?, with a different reason there.
- 03 2:87 We gave unto Jesus, son of Mary, CLEAR PROOFS AND WE SUPPORTED HIM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. In because it adds two more attributions and is repeated at 2:253.
- 04 5:75 THE MESSIAH, SON OF MARY, WAS NO OTHER THAN A MESSENGER, messengers the like of whom had passed away before him. And his mother was a saintly woman. AND THEY BOTH USED TO EAT FOOD. In because it is the limit placed on all the titles, and the argument offered is that they ate.
- 05 19:30–33 He spake: LO, I AM THE SLAVE OF GOD. He hath given me the Scripture and hath appointed me a Prophet, and hath made me blessed wheresoever I may be... Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is Jesus' own self-description in the Qur'an and the first thing he says is SLAVE OF GOD.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Yes to both, and the Qur'an gives him more titles than most readers expect - and then places a limit on all of them in the same breath.
3:45 has four in one verse: a WORD FROM HIM; THE MESSIAH; JESUS SON OF MARY; ILLUSTRIOUS IN THE WORLD AND THE HEREAFTER; and ONE OF THOSE BROUGHT NEAR.
4:171 adds another and is the key verse: the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was ONLY A MESSENGER OF GOD, AND HIS WORD WHICH HE CONVEYED UNTO MARY, AND A SPIRIT FROM HIM. Messenger, word, spirit - and the word ONLY, and then, in the same verse, SAY NOT THREE.
That is the whole shape of it. The titles are affirmed and the inference is refused, in one sentence.
2:87 adds CLEAR PROOFS and support by THE HOLY SPIRIT - and the phrase is repeated at 2:253.
5:75 is the limit stated as an argument, and the argument is deliberately mundane: the Messiah was no more than a messenger, messengers like him had passed before, his mother was a saintly woman - "And they both used to eat (earthly) food" (Pickthall). Whatever the titles mean, they are compatible with eating.
19:30 is his own first word in the Qur'an, spoken from the cradle, and it settles his self-description: LO, I AM THE SLAVE OF GOD.
What the Qur'an does not do is explain what WORD means when applied to a person. It uses the term, refuses the trinitarian inference, and does not gloss it. That gap is where the theology went, and no has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:45, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Gloria a Lui!

The Messiah does not disdain to be a servant of God, nor do the favored angels. Whoever disdains His worship, and is too arrogant-He will round them up to Himself altogether.
The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angels. Whoso scorneth His service and is proud, all such will He assemble unto Him

But as for those who believe and do good works, He will pay them their wages in full, and will increase His grace for them. But as for those who disdain and are too proud, He will punish them with an agonizing punishment. And they will find for themselves, apart from God, no lord and no savior.

We gave Moses the Scripture, and sent a succession of messengers after him. And We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear proofs, and We supported him with the Holy Spirit. Is it that whenever a messenger comes to you with anything your souls do not desire, you grew arrogant, calling some impostors, and killing others?
Compare translations (4)
And verily We gave unto Moses the Scripture and We caused a train of messengers to follow after him, and We gave unto Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's sovereignty), and We supported him with the Holy spirit. Is it ever so, that, when there cometh unto you a messenger (from Allah) with that which ye yourselves desire not, ye grow arrogant, and some ye disbelieve and some ye slay
We gave Moses the Book and we followed him up with other apostles, and we gave Jesus the son of Mary manifest signs and aided him with the Holy Spirit. Do ye then, every time an apostle comes to you with what your souls love not, proudly scorn him, and charge a part with lying and slay a part
Moreover, to Moses gave we "the Book," and we raised up apostles after him; and to Jesus, son of Mary, gave we clear proofs of his mission, and strengthened him by the Holy Spirit. So oft then as an apostle cometh to you with that which your souls desire not, swell ye with pride, and treat some as impostors, and slay others
We formerly delivered the book of the law unto Moses, and caused Apostles to succeed him, and gave evident miracles to Jesus the son of Mary, and strengthened him with the holy spirit. Do ye therefore, whenever an Apostle cometh unto you with that which your souls desire not, proudly reject him, and accuse some of imposture, and slay others

But here you are, killing your own, and expelling a group of your own from their homes-conspiring against them in wrongdoing and hostility. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although it was forbidden to you. Is it that you believe in part of the Scripture, and disbelieve in part? What is the reward for those among you who do that but humiliation in this life? And on the Day of Resurrection, they will be assigned to the most severe torment. God is not unaware of what you do.
Yet ye it is who slay each other and drive out a party of your people from their homes, supporting one another against them by sin and transgression? - and if they came to you as captives ye would ransom them, whereas their expulsion was itself unlawful for you - Believe ye in part of the Scripture and disbelieve ye in part thereof? And what is the reward of those who do so save ignominy in the life of the world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be consigned to the most grievous doom. For Allah is not unaware of what ye do
Yet ye were those who slay your kinsmen and turn a party out of their homes, and back each other up against them with sin and enmity. But if they come to you as captives ye ransom them!- and yet it is as unlawful for you to turn them out. Do ye then believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? But the reward of such among you as do that shall be nought else but disgrace in this worldly life, and on the day of the resurrection shall they be driven to the most grievous torment, for God is not unmindful of what ye do
Then were ye the very persons who slew one another; and ye drove out a part of your own people from their abodes; ye lent help against them with wrong and hatred; but if they come captives to you, ye redeem them! - Yet it was forbidden you to drive them out. Believe ye then part of the Book, and deny part? But what shall be the meed of him among you who doth this, but shame in this life? And on the day of the Resurrection they shall be sent to the most cruel of torments, for God is not regardless of what ye do
Afterwards ye were they who slew one another, and turned several of your brethren out of their houses, mutually assisting each other against them with injustice and enmity; but if they come captives unto you, ye redeem them: Yet it is equally unlawful for you to dispossess them. Do ye therefore believe in part of the book of the law, and reject other part thereof? But whoso among you doth this, shall have no other reward than shame in this life, and on the day of resurrection they shall be sent to a most grievous punishment; for God is not regardless of that which ye do

And when a scripture came to them from God, confirming what they have-although previously they were seeking victory against those who disbelieved-but when there came to them what they recognized, they disbelieved in it. So God's curse is upon the disbelievers.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:45, 4:171, 2:87, 5:75, 19:30-33, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - messiah + jesus + son + of + mary; his + word + which + he + conveyed + unto + mary; a + spirit + from + him; illustrious + in + the + world + and + the + hereafter. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:157 - carried by Does the Qur'an say Jesus was crucified?; 5:110 - carried by What miracles of Jesus does the Qur'an record?; 58:22 - matched incidentally.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
