What is Jonah's prayer from within the fish?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 21:87–88 In as ONE PASSAGE because 21:88 answers 21:87: and Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger and deemed that We had no power over him, BUT HE CRIED OUT IN THE DARKNESS, SAYING: THERE IS NO GOD SAVE THEE. BE THOU GLORIFIED! LO! I HAVE BEEN A WRONGDOER - then We heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish. THUS WE SAVE BELIEVERS. Carried whole because the closing sentence generalises the episode to everyone, which is the reason this prayer is so widely used.
  2. 02 37:139–148 In as ONE PASSAGE because it is a single continuous narrative and the parts are meaningless separated: Jonah was of those sent - he fled to the laden ship - the lots were drawn and he was rejected - the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy - AND HAD HE NOT BEEN ONE OF THOSE WHO GLORIFY, HE WOULD HAVE TARRIED IN ITS BELLY TILL THE DAY OF RESURRECTION - We cast him on a desert shore, sick, and caused a gourd to grow above him - and sent him to a hundred thousand or more, and they believed. Carried whole because 37:143-144 states what the prayer accomplished.
  3. 03 68:48–50 In as ONE PASSAGE because the three verses are one instruction with its example: wait for thy Lord's decree, and BE NOT LIKE HIM OF THE FISH, WHO CRIED OUT IN DESPAIR - had not favour from his Lord reached him he had been cast into the wilderness while reprobate - BUT HIS LORD CHOSE HIM and placed him among the righteous. Carried because it is the only place the episode is used as a WARNING, and because it still ends in his being chosen.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Three words of it are the most repeated distress prayer in Muslim practice, and the text gives it in full at 21:87.

THERE IS NO GOD BUT THOU. GLORY BE TO THEE. I HAVE BEEN OF THE WRONGDOERS.

Look at what it is made of. A declaration about God. A glorification. And an admission about himself. Again - as with Job, in the study What is Job's prayer in his affliction? - there is NO REQUEST. He does not ask to be let out. He states what is true of God and what is true of himself, in that order, and the request is left unspoken.

The setting is given as darkness, and the answer at 21:88 comes with a generalisation the text does not always add: We heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish - AND THUS WE SAVE BELIEVERS. The episode is closed by being extended to everyone, which is why the words have been prayed by so many people who were not in a fish.

37:139-148 tells the story around it, and 37:143-144 states the prayer's weight plainly: HAD HE NOT BEEN ONE OF THOSE WHO GLORIFY, he would have remained in the belly until the Day of Resurrection. What saved him is named, and it is the praising.

68:48-50 is the one that complicates it, and it belongs in an honest study. There the episode is a WARNING: be not like him of the fish, who cried out in despair - and had not favour from his Lord reached him, he would have been cast on the barren ground condemned. The text is willing to hold both. The same man is the model for the most-used prayer of distress and the example of what not to do. And even that passage ends: BUT HIS LORD CHOSE HIM, and placed him among the righteous.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 21:87–88, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 21:87-88, 37:139-148, 68:48-50, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.

The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 6 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. This study has been read against him at every anchor, on 9 September 2026, and nothing in it is withdrawn: the prayer is given in full at 21:87 in all five, its three parts stand in the same order, there is no request in any rendering, the setting is darkness in all five, 21:88 closes by generalising the rescue in all five, and 37:143-144 makes the praising what saved him in all five. Itani enters as a fifth voice and is nowhere promoted to the reading that settles a word.

What the fifth rendering adds. At 68:48 the renderings part on WHY he cried out, and Itani joins Pickthall: despair in Pickthall and Itani, choking with rage in Palmer, deep distress in Rodwell, and inwardly vexed in Sale. The passage is used as a warning under every one of them and ends in his being chosen under every one of them; what varies is the state he is warned against being in. That difference is named here rather than resolved. At 37:143 the word for what saved him is glorify in Pickthall and praise in Sale, Rodwell and Itani, with Palmer writing celebrated God's praises - which is the distribution the synthesis already reflects when it names the mechanism as the praising.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No probe was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every reference in that set was rendered from the real text before use and checked against the claim made for it; a reference whose rendered text did not carry that claim was dropped, not forced. THERE IS THEREFORE NO PROBE TO RE-RUN OVER FIVE, and the verse set is exactly the set signed on 6 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.

Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them. NO BAND OR SCORE IS QUOTED IN THIS BASIS, and none is added here: the version signed when four translations were cleared published no figure, so there is no four-based figure to restate over five.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

Ibn Kathir

A scholar who wrote Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 1373 CE.
