Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back.
What does the Qur'an say about the state between death and resurrection (barzakh)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 23:99–100 Until, when death cometh unto one of them, he saith: My Lord, send me back, that I may do right in what I have left behind. But nay - it is but a word that he speaketh; AND BEHIND THEM IS A BARRIER UNTIL THE DAY WHEN THEY ARE RAISED. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the ONLY place the word this question is named after appears in this sense, and because the barrier is stated as the answer to a request rather than described in itself. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 02 7:14–15 He said: reprieve me till the day when they are raised. He said: thou art of those reprieved. In as ONE PASSAGE because the request and the grant together establish that the interval is a real span in this text - Iblis is given time inside it.
- 03 15:36–38 He said: My Lord, reprieve me till the day when they are raised. He said: thou art of those reprieved, till an appointed time. In as ONE PASSAGE because the added clause - TILL AN APPOINTED TIME - qualifies the reprieve and is absent from 7:14-15.
- 04 37:144 He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised. In because it uses the same span as a measure of duration in an ordinary narrative, which shows the phrase is idiomatic and not technical.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The honest answer is that the Qur'an says almost nothing about this, and the one word it uses appears once.
23:100 is the verse. A man at the point of death asks to be sent back to do right; the answer is that it is only a word he speaks, AND BEHIND THEM IS A BARRIER UNTIL THE DAY THEY ARE RAISED. That is the whole of it. The barrier is mentioned to close off a request, not to describe a condition. Nothing is said about what happens behind it, whether anyone is aware, or how long it is experienced to be.
What the other verses establish is only that the span EXISTS. Iblis asks to be reprieved until the day they are raised, and is granted it (7:14-15, 15:36-38) - so the interval is real enough to be lived through by someone. 37:144 uses the same phrase to measure how long Jonah would have stayed in the fish. The expression is ordinary language for a long time until the resurrection, not a technical term for a state.
A reader should be told plainly what this means. The detailed picture of the interval - the questioning in the grave, the soul's ascent, the grave as garden or pit, the punishment before the resurrection - is , and this study cannot quote or assess any of it because no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit. The Qur'an, in these four renderings, gives a barrier and nothing behind it.
One drop is worth naming. 36:9 uses the same word for barrier - a bar before them and a bar behind them - and it is about people in THIS life who cannot see. A search on the word alone would have produced a study of the afterlife out of a verse that is not about it.
The wider question of what happens after death is carried by the study What does the Qur'an say happens after death?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 23:99–100, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 23:99-100, 7:14-15, 15:36-38, 37:144, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - barrier + behind; barzakh; until + day + raised; partition + until. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 36:9 - the same word for barrier, but the subject is blindness to the truth in this life - a single-word search would have made it evidence about the afterlife; 38:79 - near-identical to 15:36; recorded so the repetition is visible.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
