What does the Qur'an say about public office as a trust?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:58 God commandeth you that YE RESTORE DEPOSITS TO THEIR OWNERS, and, if ye judge between mankind, that ye judge justly. In because it is the verse that joins holding a trust to exercising judgment, in one command. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about a just ruler and just governance? and by the study What does the Qur'an say about keeping trusts and promises?, each with its own reason.
- 02 12:54–55 He said: lo, thou art today in our presence established and trusted. He said: SET ME OVER THE STOREHOUSES OF THE LAND; LO, I AM A SKILLED CUSTODIAN. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the only place in the Qur'an where someone ASKS for public office, and the qualification he offers is competence in the specific function.
- 03 28:26 One of the two women said: O my father, hire him! For the best man thou canst hire is THE STRONG, THE TRUSTWORTHY. In because it states a two-part test for appointment - capability and trustworthiness - in the plainest terms the text offers.
- 04 33:72 Lo, WE OFFERED THE TRUST unto the heavens and the earth and the hills, but they shrank from bearing it and were afraid of it; AND MAN ASSUMED IT. Lo, he hath proved a tyrant and a fool. In because it is the widest sense of the word trust in the book and it ends in a verdict. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from the study What does the Qur'an say about humans as stewards (khalifa) and the trust of the earth?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four passages, and two of them are job interviews.
12:54-55 is the more surprising. Joseph, brought out of prison and told he is now established and trusted, does not wait to be assigned a role. He asks: SET ME OVER THE STOREHOUSES OF THE LAND - and gives his reason: I AM A SKILLED CUSTODIAN. The Qur'an contains a man requesting high office and offering technical competence as the ground. It is not presented as immodesty.
28:26 supplies the general test, spoken by a woman recommending a stranger to her father: THE BEST MAN YOU CAN HIRE IS THE STRONG, THE TRUSTWORTHY. Two criteria, and only one is moral. Capability comes first in the sentence.
4:58 is the command that makes this a study about TRUST rather than about jobs. Restore the deposits to their owners, and if you judge between people, judge justly - one verse, two duties, and the text does not separate them. Whatever is held on someone else's behalf is a deposit, and the verse then moves straight to the exercise of judgment.
33:72 is carried here for the widest sense: the trust was offered to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, they refused it in fear, and MAN TOOK IT UP - and the same verse calls him a tyrant and a fool. Any account of office as a trust in this text has to sit beside that verdict.
What is absent is procedure: no verse on how office is conferred, reviewed, or removed. The study What does the Qur'an say about obeying those in authority? takes up obeying authority, on which the text is equally sparse.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:58, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye restore deposits to their owners, and, if ye judge between mankind, that ye judge justly. Lo! comely is this which Allah admonisheth you. Lo! Allah is ever Hearer, Seer
Verily, God bids you pay your trusts to their owners, and when ye judge between men to judge with justice. Verily, God, excellent is what He admonishes you with; verily, God both hears and sees
Verily, God enjoineth you to give back your trusts to their owners, and when ye judge between men, to judge with fairness. Excellent is the practice to which God exhorteth you. God Heareth, Beholdeth
Moreover God commandeth you to restore what ye are trusted with, to the owners; and when ye judge between men, that ye judge according to equity: And surely an excellent virtue it is to which God exhorteth you; for God both heareth and seeth

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

God will punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the idolaters, men and women. And God will redeem the believers, men and women. God is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
So Allah punisheth hypocritical men and hypocritical women, and idolatrous men and idolatrous women. But Allah pardoneth believing men and believing women, and Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful
That God may torment the hypocritical men and hypocritical women, and the idolaters and idolatresses; and that God may turn relenting towards the believing men and believing women; verily, God is ever forgiving, merciful
Therefore will God punish the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women, and the men and the women who join gods with God; but to the believing men and women will God turn him: for God is Indulgent, Merciful
That God may punish the hypocritical men, and the hypocritical women, and the idolaters, and the idolatresses; and that God may be turned unto the true believers, both men and women; for God is gracious and merciful

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:58, 12:54-55, 28:26, 33:72, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - restore + deposits + owners + judge + justly; set + me + over + storehouses; strong + trustworthy; custodian + knowing. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
