Believers are not to take disbelievers for friends instead of believers. Whoever does that has nothing to do with God, unless it is to protect your own selves against them. God warns you to beware of Him. To God is the destiny.
Does the Qur'an permit lying to outsiders?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:28 The clause this question is actually argued from, and it is in the study on the Editor's instruction. All five renderings carry both halves in one sentence: do not take those who disbelieve as friends in preference to believers - unless ye fear something from them. Sale has unless ye fear any danger from them; Pickthall has unless it be that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking as it were security; Itani has unless it is to protect your own selves against them. In because a study of this question without this verse would be answering a different question. Divergence band 5 of 5 on the five-based measure, the widest in this set. THIS VERSE IS ALSO CARRIED, with a different reason, by the study Does the Qur'an forbid befriending non-Muslims?
- 02 3:75 The one verse in the candidate set that speaks to the question directly - and it runs against it. It reports people who say they owe no duty to outsiders, and calls that saying a lie against God. All five renderings carry both the claim and the rebuke.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Two verses, and they pull in opposite directions - which is the finding, not a problem.
3:75 reports some of the People of the Book saying they owe no duty to outsiders - Sale has we are not obliged to observe justice with the heathen, Pickthall we have no duty to the Gentiles, Itani we are under no obligation towards the gentiles - and the verse calls that saying a lie against God, spoken knowingly. Where the candidate set touches the question directly, it condemns the position.
3:28 is the verse the doctrine in the question is actually built on, and all five renderings keep both of its halves in one sentence: do not take those who disbelieve as friends in preference to believers, unless ye fear something from them. The five differ sharply on how wide that exception runs, and they now divide two ways rather than spreading evenly. Three put it as fear: Sale has unless ye fear any danger from them, Rodwell unless indeed ye fear a fear from them, Palmer unless ye fear some danger. Two put it as self-protection without naming fear at all: Pickthall expands it furthest, unless it be that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security, and Itani has unless it is to protect your own selves against them. The fifth rendering does not settle the width of the exception; it makes the split a two-against-three rather than one translator standing apart, and that is a fact about five translators, not about the Arabic.
So the text carries a permission to guard oneself under fear, and a rebuke of the claim that outsiders are owed nothing. How far the first reaches - whether it licenses concealment, and of what - is not settled inside these two verses. That is the interpretation layer, named commentators quoted and disputable, and no has cleared the rights audit. This study shows both verses and stops.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:28, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation
2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Onlar, bile bile Allah’a karşı yalan söylerler.

Indeed, whoever fulfills his commitments and maintains piety-God loves the pious.
Nay, but (the chosen of Allah is) he who fulfilleth his pledge and wardeth off (evil); for lo! Allah loveth those who ward off (evil)
Yea, whoso fulfils his covenant and fears,- verily, God loves those who fear
But whoso is true to his engagement, and feareth God, - verily God loveth those that fear Him
Yea; whoso keepeth his covenant, and feareth God, God surely loveth those who fear him

Those who exchange the covenant of God, and their vows, for a small price, will have no share in the Hereafter, and God will not speak to them, nor will He look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. They will have a painful punishment.
Lo! those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths, they have no portion in the Hereafter. Allah will neither speak to them nor look upon them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He make them grow. Theirs will be a painful doom
Those who sell God's covenant and their oaths for a little price, these have no portion in the future life. God will not speak to them, and will not look upon them on the resurrection day, and will not purify them; but for them is grievous woe
Verily they who barter their engagement with God, and their oaths, for some paltry price - These! no portion for them in the world to come! and God will not speak to them, and will not look on them, on the day of resurrection, and will not assoil them! for them, a grievous chastisement
But they who make merchandize of God's covenant, and of their oaths, for a small price, shall have no portion in the next life, neither shall God speak to them or regard them on the day of resurrection, nor shall he cleanse them; but they shall suffer a grievous punishment
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 3:28, 3:75, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-09-05 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles how wide the exception runs. What changed: 3:28's exception was described as a four-way spread with Pickthall furthest out; over five it divides two ways, three renderings putting it as fear and two as self-protection, with Itani standing beside Pickthall rather than alone; 3:75 gains Itani's wording; and the divergence figures below are restated on the five-based measure, where 3:28 moves up a band. What did not change: the verse set, the reasons per verse, and the refusal to settle how far the permission reaches.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a conjunctive word search over the cleared renderings, returned in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and verses matched in all of them were carried forward. Verses that matched the search on wording alone were proposed for removal and confirmed out: 3:61 - Matched on lie. It is the mutual-imprecation passage, calling God's curse on whoever lies in a dispute - not a permission to lie.; 3:196 - Matched on deceive. It tells the Prophet not to be deceived by the prosperity of those who disbelieve.; 5:103 - Matched on lie. It is about inventing categories of livestock and attributing them to God.; 6:21 - Matched on lie. It condemns forging a lie against God - the opposite of the permission the question asks about.; 6:24 - Matched on lie. It describes people lying against themselves at the judgment. Of the candidates the search returned, one bears on the question and argues against it. 3:28, the clause the doctrine in this question is actually built on, was added on the Editor's instruction; it is also carried, with a different reason, by the study Does the Qur'an forbid befriending non-Muslims?, and nothing was moved out of that study to place it here. The re-check over five translations added and removed no verse. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose.
PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. The version signed when four translations were cleared named its confirmed-out matches but not its probe terms; this re-check over five translations records them and their results. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["lie"] - 162 verses, reaching 3:75; ["deceive"] - 14, reaching neither anchor; ["gentiles"] - 3, reaching 3:75; ["heathen"] - 1, reaching 3:75. Union 178 verses, of which 177 are not anchors of this study and none was taken: 3:28 is in the study on the Editor's instruction and was never a search result, and the rest were confirmed out by the Editor. Recorded because it bears on the prose: "gentiles" now reaches 3:75 in Pickthall AND Itani where it reached Pickthall alone over four, and "heathen" returns exactly one verse in the whole corpus, 3:75, in Sale alone.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. Across this set the derived divergence measure, recomputed over five renderings on 2026-09-07, runs from band 3 at 3:75 (0.59), where the five stand closest, to band 5 at 3:28 (0.68), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared gave band 3 at 3:75 (0.58) and band 4 at 3:28 (0.65): 3:28 has moved up a band on the five-based measure, so the verse this study turns on is now among the most divided in the corpus. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
