And do not say of those who are killed in the cause of God, "Dead." Rather, they are alive, but you do not perceive.
What does the Qur'an say about martyrs after death?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:154 And call not those who are slain in the way of God DEAD. Nay, they are living, only ye perceive not. In because it is a correction of speech - a rule about what you may call them - and because the reason given for the mistake is on the observer's side.
- 02 3:169–170 Think not of those who are slain in the way of God as dead; nay, they are living, with their Lord they have provision - jubilant because of what God hath bestowed, rejoicing for those who have not yet joined them. In as ONE PASSAGE because 3:170 is what 3:169 leaves unsaid: not merely living but provided for, glad, and aware of people still behind them. DUAL-PLACED: the study Does the Qur'an promise paradise for dying in battle? carries these verses with a different reason - there the question is whether death in battle earns paradise; here it is what the text says about their state.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Two passages, and both of them are corrections rather than descriptions.
2:154 does not begin by telling you what martyrs are. It tells you what NOT TO SAY: call them not dead. Then it supplies the alternative - they are living - and then explains the difficulty: ONLY YE PERCEIVE NOT. The error the verse addresses is one of perception, and it locates it in the speaker.
3:169-170 goes further than 2:154, and the extra material is worth having. They are living WITH THEIR LORD. They have provision. They are jubilant at what has been given them. And - the strangest clause - they are rejoicing FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET JOINED THEM AND ARE LEFT BEHIND, that no fear shall come upon them. Whatever state is being described, the text presents it as one in which the dead are aware of and glad about the living who will follow.
That is a striking thing to set beside What does the Qur'an say about whether the dead know the living?, where 27:80 and 30:52 say the Prophet cannot make the dead hear. This study does not reconcile them, and a reader should see both.
Note what these verses do NOT say. They do not describe a place, they do not say what the provision is, and they do not state the conditions on which someone is counted among the slain in the way of God. The study Does the Qur'an promise paradise for dying in battle? takes up that last question and finds the text more restrained than the popular claim. The two studies carry the same verses on purpose, with different reasons, and should be read together.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:154, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation
2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

3:170 Onlar, Allah’ın kendilerine fazlından vermiş olduklarıyla sevinç içindedirler. Arkalarından gelip, henüz kendilerine katılmamış olanlara (şehitler için), bir korku olmayacağı ve üzülmeyecekleri müjdesini verirler.

And that He may know the hypocrites. And it was said to them, "Come, fight in the cause of God, or contribute." They said, "If we knew how to fight, we would have followed you." On that day they were closer to infidelity than they were to faith. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts; but God knows what they hide.

Those who responded to God and the Messenger, despite the persecution they had suffered. For the virtuous and the pious among them is a great reward.
As for those who heard the call of Allah and His messenger after the harm befell them (in the fight); for such of them as do right and ward off (evil), there is great reward
Whoso answered to the call of God and of His prophet after sorrow had befallen them, for those, if they do good and fear God, is a mighty hire
As to those who after the reverse which befel them, respond to God and the Apostle - such of them as do good works and fear God, shall have a great reward
They who hearkened unto God and his apostle, after a wound had befallen them at Ohod, such of them as do good works, and fear God, shall have a great reward

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:154, 3:169-170, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - slain + way + god + dead; slain + living; killed + way + living; nay + living. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
