Nor are equal the living and the dead. God causes whomever He wills to hear, but you cannot make those in the graves hear.
What does the Qur'an say about whether the dead know the living?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 35:22 Nor are the living equal with the dead. God maketh whom He will to hear. THOU CANST NOT REACH THOSE WHO ARE IN THE GRAVES. In because it is the plainest statement, and because the last clause is addressed to the Prophet himself - if anyone could reach them, it would be him.
- 02 27:80 Lo, thou canst not make the dead to hear, nor canst thou make the deaf to hear the call when they have turned to flee. In because it pairs the dead with the deaf who are walking away, which tells you what kind of statement this is - a comparison about preaching, not a report about the afterlife.
- 03 30:52 Verily thou canst not make the dead to hear, nor canst thou make the deaf to hear the call when they have turned to flee. In because it repeats 27:80 word for word in another surah, and the repetition establishes it as a fixed saying rather than a remark.
- 04 6:36 Only those can accept who HEAR. As for the dead, God will raise them up; then unto Him they will be returned. In because it makes the same comparison and then adds the exception - the dead God will raise - which shows the deafness is not final.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four verses, and everything depends on noticing what kind of sentence they are.
35:22 says: thou canst not reach those who are in the graves. 27:80 and 30:52 say, in identical words: thou canst not make the dead to hear. Read alone, these look like a flat answer - the dead cannot hear the living.
But look at the company each keeps. In all three, the dead are paired with THE DEAF WHO HAVE TURNED TO FLEE, and in 35:22 with the living who are not their equals. These are verses about PREACHING. They are telling the Prophet that some people cannot be reached, and the dead are the comparison, not the subject. 6:36 makes that explicit by starting from the other end: only those who HEAR can accept - as for the dead, God will raise them.
So the honest report is that the Qur'an does not answer this question directly. What it does is use the unreachability of the dead as a figure for the unreachability of certain living people.
Set against that, though, is a verse this study does not carry and the reader should know about. 3:170, in What does the Qur'an say about martyrs after death?, says the slain are REJOICING FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET JOINED THEM AND ARE LEFT BEHIND - which describes some of the dead as aware of some of the living. The text is not uniform, and this study will not pretend it is.
The large body of material on whether the dead hear visitors, hear the greeting at the grave, or benefit from prayers is and was disputed within the tradition itself. No hadith collection has cleared the rights audit, so none of it can be reported here.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 35:22, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Ведь, воистину, ты не заставишь слышать мёртвых и не заставишь глухих услышать зов, когда они обращаются вспять.
Ти не можеш да дозовеш мртве, ни глуве да довикнеш, кад се од тебе окрену, удаљавајући се,

So observe the effects of God's mercy-how He revives the earth after it was dead. Indeed, He is the Reviver of the dead. He is Capable of everything.
Look, therefore, at the prints of Allah's mercy (in creation): how He quickeneth the earth after her death. Lo! He verily is the Quickener of the Dead, and He is Able to do all things
Look then to the vestiges of God's mercy, how He quickens the earth after its death; verily, that is the quickener of the dead, and He is mighty over all
Look then at the traces of God's mercy - how after its death he quickeneth the earth! This same God will surely quicken the dead, for to all things His might is equal
Consider therefore the traces of God's mercy; how He quickeneth the earth, after its state of death: Verily the same will raise the dead; for He is almighty

But if We send a wind, and they see it turning things yellow, they would continue thereafter to disbelieve.
And if We sent a wind and they beheld it yellow, they verily would still continue in their disbelief
But if we should send a wind and they should see it yellow, they would after that become misbelievers
Yet should we send a blast, and should they see their harvest turn yellow, they would afterwards shew themselves ungrateful
Yet if We should send a blasting wind, and they should see their corn yellow and burnt up, they would surely become ungrateful, after our former favours

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 35:22, 27:80, 30:52, 6:36, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - thou + canst + not + make + dead + hear; dead + hear; make + hear + graves; living + dead + not + alike. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 16:65 - the rain analogy - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about winds and rain as signs?
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
