There is no moving creature on earth but its sustenance depends on God. And He knows where it lives and where it rests. Everything is in a Clear Book.
What does the Qur'an say about provision (rizq) coming from God?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 11:6 AND THERE IS NOT A BEAST IN THE EARTH BUT THE SUSTENANCE THEREOF DEPENDETH ON GOD. He knoweth its habitation and its repository. All is in a clear Record. In because it extends provision to every living thing rather than to people, and because it names both where the creature lives and where its store is.
- 02 29:60 And how many an animal there is that beareth not its own provision! GOD PROVIDETH FOR IT AND FOR YOU. He is the Hearer, the Knower. In because it argues from animals that carry no store to the reader's own case, in one sentence.
- 03 42:12 His are the keys of the heavens and the earth. HE ENLARGETH PROVIDENCE FOR WHOM HE WILL AND STRAITENETH IT. Lo, He is Knower of all things. In because it states the doctrine in its standard form, and both directions are named.
- 04 30:37 See they not that God enlargeth the provision for whom He will, and straiteneth it? LO, HEREIN INDEED ARE PORTENTS FOR FOLK WHO BELIEVE. In because it turns unequal provision into a sign to be reflected on rather than a fact to be explained.
- 05 3:37 And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance... Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary, whence cometh unto thee this food? SHE ANSWERED: IT IS FROM GOD. GOD GIVETH WITHOUT STINT TO WHOM HE WILL. In because it is the only narrative instance in the set, and the answer is given by a woman to a prophet.
- 06 28:82 And morning found those who had coveted his place but yesterday crying: WELLADAY! GOD ENLARGETH THE PROVISION FOR WHOM HE WILL OF HIS SLAVES AND STRAITENETH IT. If God had not been gracious unto us He would have caused it to swallow us. In because the doctrine is spoken by people who have just watched Korah's wealth swallowed by the earth - it is stated as a lesson learned, not as an abstraction.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and the formula at the centre of them is uncomfortable, so the text is worth reading closely rather than paraphrased.
The formula is at 42:12 and 30:37, and again at 13:26 and 39:52 - which are not rendered on this page - in nearly identical words: GOD ENLARGES PROVISION FOR WHOM HE WILL AND STRAITENS IT. Both directions. The text does not present abundance as reward and scarcity as punishment; it presents both as distributed.
30:37 does something with that which is easy to miss. Having stated it, it adds: "herein indeed are portents for folk who believe" (Pickthall). Unequal provision is offered as something to reflect on. The verse does not explain it.
Two verses argue from animals. 11:6: there is not a creature on earth but its sustenance depends on God, and He knows its dwelling and its store. 29:60 is sharper: HOW MANY AN ANIMAL THERE IS THAT BEARETH NOT ITS OWN PROVISION - that carries no supplies at all - GOD PROVIDETH FOR IT AND FOR YOU. The comparison is deliberately to creatures with no capacity to plan.
3:37 is the one story. Zachariah keeps finding food with Mary and asks where it comes from. Her answer is the whole doctrine in five words: IT IS FROM GOD. GOD GIVETH WITHOUT STINT TO WHOM HE WILL.
And 28:82 puts the formula in the mouths of people who had envied Korah the day before and have just seen the ground swallow him. Stated there, it is not consolation - it is relief at not having got what they wanted.
Read with Is seeking wealth blameworthy in the Qur'an? and What does the Qur'an say about earning a living?, the text does not treat provision from God as a reason not to work. 67:15, which is not rendered on this page, tells the reader to walk the earth and eat of it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 11:6, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And if we defer their chastisement to some definite time, they will exclaim, "What keepeth it back?" What! will it not come upon them on a day when there shall be none to avert it from them? And that at which they scoffed shall enclose them in on every side

And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and the earth and regulated the sun and the moon?" They would say, "God." Why then do they deviate?
And if thou wert to ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, and constrained the sun and the moon (to their appointed work)? they would say: Allah. How then are they turned away
And if thou shouldst ask them, 'Who created the heavens and the earth, and subjected the sun and the moon?' they will surely say, 'God!' how then can they lie
If thou ask them who hath created the Heavens and the Earth, and hath imposed laws on the sun and on the moon, they will certainly say, "God." How then can they devise lies

He prescribed for you the same religion He enjoined upon Noah, and what We inspired to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: "You shall uphold the religion, and be not divided therein." As for the idolaters, what you call them to is outrageous to them. God chooses to Himself whom He wills, and He guides to Himself whoever repents.
He hath ordained for you that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire in thee (Muhammad), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying: Establish the religion, and be not divided therein. Dreadful for the idolaters is that unto which thou callest them. Allah chooseth for Himself whom He will, and guideth unto Himself him who turneth (toward Him)
He has enjoined upon you for religion what He prescribed to Noah and what we inspired thee with, and what we inspired Abraham and Moses and Jesus,- to be steadfast in religion, and not to part into sects therein - a great thing to the idolaters is that which ye call them to! He hath ordained you the religion which He commanded Noah, and which We have revealed unto thee, O Mohammed, and which We commanded Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: Saying, observe this religion, and be not divided therein. They became divided only after knowledge came to them, out of resentment among themselves. Were it not for a predetermined decision from your Lord, judgment would have been pronounced between them. Indeed, those who were made to inherit the Book after them are in grave doubt about it.
And they were not divided until after the knowledge came unto them, through rivalry among themselves; and had it not been for a Word that had already gone forth from thy Lord for an appointed term, it surely had been judged between them. And those who were made to inherit the Scripture after them are verily in hopeless doubt concerning it
But they did not part into sects until after the knowledge had come to them, through mutual envy; and had it not been for thy Lord's word already passed for an appointed time, it would surely have been decided between them; but, verily, those who have been given the Book as an inheritance after them, are in hesitating doubt concerning it
Nor were they divided into sects through mutual jealousy, till after that "the knowledge" had come to them: and had not a decree from thy Lord gone forth respiting them to a fixed time, verily, there had at once been a decision between them. And they who have inherited "the Book" after them, are in perplexity of doubt concerning it
Those who lived in times past were not divided among themselves, until after that the knowledge of God's unity had come unto them; through their own perverseness: And unless a previous decree had passed from thy Lord, to bear with them till a determined time, verily the matter had been decided between them, by the destruction of the gain-sayers. They who have inherited the scriptures after them, are certainly in a perplexing doubt concerning the same

So give the relative his rights, and the destitute, and the wayfarer. That is best for those who seek God's presence. Those are the prosperous.
So give to the kinsman his due, and to the needy, and to the wayfarer. That is best for those who seek Allah's Countenance. And such are they who are successful
Then give to the kinsman his due, and to the poor and to the wayfarer; that is better for those who desire the face of God, and these it is who are prosperous

The usury you practice, seeking thereby to multiply people's wealth, will not multiply with God. But what you give in charity, desiring God's approval-these are the multipliers.
That which ye give in usury in order that it may increase on (other) people's property hath no increase with Allah; but that which ye give in charity, seeking Allah's Countenance, hath increase manifold
And what ye put out to usury that it may increase with the wealth of men, it shall not increase with God; but what ye put out in alms, desiring the face of God - these it is who shall gain double
Whatever ye put out at usury to increase it with the substance of others shall have no increase from God: but whatever ye shall give in alms, as seeking the face of God, shall be doubled to you
Whatever ye shall give in usury, to be an increase of men's substance, shall not be increased by the blessing of God: But whatever ye shall give in alms, for God's sake, they shall receive a twofold reward

Her Lord accepted her with a gracious reception, and brought her a beautiful upbringing, and entrusted her to the care of Zechariah. Whenever Zechariah entered upon her in the sanctuary, he found her with provision. He said, "O Mary, where did you get this from?" And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah.

But those who were given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of God is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds." Yet none attains it except the steadfast.
But those who had been given knowledge said: Woe unto you! The reward of Allah for him who believeth and doeth right is better, and only the steadfast will obtain it
But those who had been given knowledge said, 'Woe to you! the reward of God is better for him who believes and does right; but none shall meet with it except the patient

So We caused the earth to cave in on him and his mansion. He had no company to save him from God, and he could not defend himself.
So We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling-place. Then he had no host to help him against Allah, nor was he of those who can save themselves
And we clave the earth with him and with his house; and he had no troop to help him against God, nor was he of those who were helped
And we clave the earth for him and for his palace, and he had no forces, in the place of God, to help him, nor was he among those who are succoured
And We caused the ground to cleave in sunder, and to swallow up him and his palace: And he had no forces to defend him, besides God; neither was he rescued from punishment

That Home of the Hereafter-We assign it for those who seek no superiority on earth, nor corruption. And the outcome is for the cautious.
As for that Abode of the Hereafter We assign it unto those who seek not oppression in the earth, nor yet corruption. The sequel is for those who ward off (evil)
That is the future abode; we make it for those who do not wish to be haughty in the earth, nor to do evil, and the end is for the pious
As to this future mansion, we will bestow it on those who seek not to exalt them in the earth or to do wrong: And there is a happy issue for the God-fearing
As to this future mansion of paradise, We will give it unto them who seek not to exalt themselves in the earth, or to do wrong; for the happy issue shall attend the pious

Whoever brings a virtue will receive better than it. But whoever brings evil-the evildoers will be rewarded only according to what they used to do.
Whoso bringeth a good deed, he will have better than the same; while as for him who bringeth an ill-deed, those who do ill-deeds will be requited only what they did
He who brings a good deed shall have better than it; and he who brings an evil deed - those who do evil deeds shall only be rewarded for that which they have done
Whoso doeth good shall have reward beyond its merits, and whoso doeth evil, they who do evil shall be rewarded only as they shall have wrought
Whoso doth good, shall receive a reward which shall exceed the merit thereof: But as to him who doth evil, they who work evil shall be rewarded according to the merit only of that which they shall have wrought
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 11:6, 29:60, 42:12, 30:37, 3:37, 28:82, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - no + creature + earth + but + provision + god; provideth + without + measure; giveth + sustenance + whom + he + will; enlargeth + provision + straiteneth. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 13:26 - near-identical to 42:12 and 30:37, both kept; 39:52 - near-identical.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
