And those who, when they spend, are neither wasteful nor stingy, but choose a middle course between that.
What does the Qur'an say about moderation in spending?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 25:67 Those who, when they spend, are neither prodigal nor grudging; and there is ever a firm station between the two. In because it names both errors and asserts that a middle exists - the verse the question is really asking about.
- 02 17:29 Let not thy hand be chained to thy neck, nor open it with a complete opening, lest thou sit down rebuked, denuded. In because it gives the same rule as an image of two hands, and states the consequence of each extreme.
- 03 47:38 Ye are called to spend in the way of God, yet among you are some who hoard; and whoso hoardeth, hoardeth only from his own soul. In because it addresses the withholding side alone and says who the loss falls on.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Three verses, and two of them say the same thing twice - once as a principle and once as a picture.
25:67 states it: those who, when they spend, are neither prodigal nor grudging, and between the two there is a firm station. Both extremes are named as faults in one clause, and the middle is asserted to exist rather than left as a gap.
17:29 draws it. Do not chain your hand to your neck, and do not open it all the way - or you will sit down rebuked and stripped. The two gestures are the two errors, and the verse says where each ends up.
47:38 takes only the withholding side, and adds something the other two do not: whoso hoards, hoards only from HIS OWN SOUL. God is named in the same verse as the Rich, and the reader as the poor one. The loss in withholding is placed on the withholder.
What is absent is a proportion. No verse in this set gives a fraction, a ceiling or a floor. 25:67's firm station between the two is the nearest the text comes to a measure, and it is not a number - the obligatory share is the separate zakat question.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 25:67, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Angalieni!
İşte siz, Allah yolunda harcamaya davet olunan kimselersiniz. Fakat, sizden cimrilik edenler vardır. Kim cimrilik ederse ancak kendi aleyhine cimrilik eder. Allah zengindir, siz ise fakirsiniz. Eğer O'ndan yüz çevirirseniz, yerinize sizden başka bir toplum getirir. Artık onlar sizin gibi de olmazlar.

The life of this world is nothing but play and pastime. But if you have faith and lead a righteous life, He will grant you your rewards, and He will not ask you for your possessions.
The life of the world is but a sport and a pastime. And if ye believe and ward off (evil), He will give you your wages, and will not ask of you your worldly wealth
The life of this world is but a play and a sport; but if ye believe and fear God, He will give you your hire
Surely this present life is only a play, and pastime! but if ye believe, fear God; He will give you your rewards: but He will not ask all your riches of you
Verily this present life is only a play and a vain amusement: But if ye believe, and fear God, He will give you your rewards. He doth not require of you your whole substance

The translators word this verse differently
Were He to ask you for it, and press you, you would become tightfisted, and He would expose your unwillingness.
If He should ask it of you and importune you, ye would hoard it, and He would bring to light your (secret) hates
He does not ask you for (all) your property; if He were to ask you for it and to press you, ye would be niggardly, and he would bring your malice out
Should He ask them of you, and urge you, ye would shew yourself niggards: and He would bring your grudges to light
If He should require the whole of you, and earnestly press you, ye would become niggardly, and it would raise your hatred against his apostle
47:38 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations available when this study was first written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 25:67, 17:29, 47:38, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was first signed on 5 September 2026, over four English translations. Itani 2012 became available to it on 7 September 2026. On 9 September 2026 this study was read against his translation at every verse it carries, and nothing in it is withdrawn: 25:67 names both extremes and asserts a middle in all five, 17:29 gives the two gestures and the consequence of each in all five, and 47:38 places the loss on the withholder in all five. That no verse in this set gives a fraction, a ceiling or a floor holds at all three verses in every translation. Itani is read as a fifth translation and is nowhere treated as the reading that settles a word.
What the fifth translation adds. The pair of faults at 25:67 is named differently by every translation - wasteful and stingy in Itani, extravagant and miserly in Palmer, prodigal and grudging in Pickthall, lavish and niggard in Rodwell, profuse and niggardly in Sale - and so is the middle that is asserted to exist: a middle course, a stand between the two, a firm station, the mean, a just medium. No translation leaves the middle out. The words are named here rather than reconciled.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - squander; wantonness; hand + chained + neck; hand + fettered; neither + prodigal; stint; spend + neither + extravagant. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set. The search has not been run again over five translations, so the verses are exactly those of the version signed on 5 September 2026: none was added and none was removed.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 2:262; 2:274; 14:31. The reason for each was not recorded.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them. No figure for how far they differ is quoted here.
