It is the speech of a noble messenger.
What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet not being a poet or possessed?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 69:40–43 That this is in truth the speech of an illustrious messenger. IT IS NOT POET'S SPEECH - little is it that ye believe. NOR DIVINER'S SPEECH - little is it that ye remember. It is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. In as ONE PASSAGE because the two denials are consecutive and each carries its own reproach, and because the positive claim frames them.
- 02 52:29–30 Therefor warn men. BY THE GRACE OF GOD THOU ART NEITHER SOOTHSAYER NOR MADMAN. Or say they: a poet, one for whom we may expect the accident of time? In as ONE PASSAGE because 52:30 quotes the charge that 52:29 denies, and adds the detail that they were waiting for him to die.
- 03 68:2–4 THOU ART NOT, FOR THY LORD'S FAVOUR UNTO THEE, A MADMAN. And lo, thine verily will be a reward unfailing. AND LO, THOU ART OF A TREMENDOUS NATURE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the denial is immediately followed by the strongest positive statement about his character in the Qur'an.
- 04 21:5 Nay, say they: MUDDLED DREAMS; nay, HE HATH BUT INVENTED IT; nay, HE IS BUT A POET. Let him bring us a portent even as those of old were sent with portents. In because it stacks three incompatible accusations in one sentence, which is itself the reply.
- 05 37:36–37 And said: SHALL WE FORSAKE OUR GODS FOR A MAD POET? Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent before him. In as ONE PASSAGE because the accusation and the flat answer are consecutive.
- 06 26:224–227 As for poets, THE ERRING FOLLOW THEM. Hast thou not seen how they stray in every valley, and how they say that which they do not? Save those who believe and do good works and remember God much. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the Qur'an's own account of what is wrong with poets - and because 26:227 exempts some of them, which is almost never quoted.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The charges were poet, soothsayer, and madman, and the Qur'an records all three and answers each.
21:5 is the most useful verse, because it stacks them: MUDDLED DREAMS - no, HE HAS INVENTED IT - no, HE IS A POET. Three explanations in one breath, and they are mutually inconsistent. A man having confused dreams is not a man deliberately fabricating, and neither is a poet. The verse preserves the incoherence.
69:41-42 denies two of them in successive lines and attaches a different reproach to each: IT IS NOT POET'S SPEECH - little is it that YE BELIEVE - NOR DIVINER'S SPEECH - little is it that YE REMEMBER.
52:29-30 denies soothsayer and madman together, and then quotes the poet charge with a detail worth having: they say he is A POET FOR WHOM WE MAY EXPECT THE ACCIDENT OF TIME - that is, they were waiting for him to die and the problem to resolve itself.
68:2-4 is the most striking. THOU ART NOT A MADMAN - and then, two lines later, THOU ART OF A TREMENDOUS NATURE, or a sublime character, or a mighty morality. The denial of derangement is followed immediately by the highest statement about him in the book.
26:224-227 is the Qur'an on poets in general, and it is more careful than its reputation. The charge is not that poetry is false but that poets STRAY IN EVERY VALLEY AND SAY WHAT THEY DO NOT DO - inconsistency between speech and conduct. And 26:227 exempts those who believe, do good and remember God much. The exception is rarely quoted and it belongs in the record.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 69:40–43, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

52:30 Ή λένε (οι άπιστοι): «(Ο Μωχάμμαντ) είναι ένας ποιητής, για τον οποίο περιμένουμε να του έρθει ο θάνατος ή κάποιο ατύχημα (και έτσι να ξεφορτωθούμε το κάλεσμά του)»;

52:29 Basi kumbusha!

26:224 Yimooɓe ɓeen ko jokkata ɓe, ko bewɓe ɓeen.
26:225 Enee, a tinaani won'dema kamɓe heɓe yinoo e kala aynde?
26:226 E tawde kamɓe heɓe wowla ko ɓe ngollataa.
26:227 Si wonaa ɓeen gooŋɗinɓe ɓe ngolli golle moƴƴe ɓe njaŋtii Alla ko ɗuuɗi ɓe yoɓtii ɓaawo ɓe tooñaama.
26:224 224. Tokie, kaip poetai - nusidėjėliai seka jais.
26:224 Walaleessitoota jallattootatu isaan hordofa.
26:225 Isaan sulula (ija) (oduu) hunda keessa akka seenan hin agartuu?
26:226 Isaan (nikijiban) waan hin dalagne jedhan (dubbatan).
26:227 Warra amananiifi gaggaarii hojjatan, kan baayisanii Rabbiin faarsan, erga roorrifamii booda (walaloodhaan) of irraa deebisan (harka kaffalatan) malee (Isaan hin komatanu). Isaan miidhaa dalagan (eega du’anii booda) deebifama akkamii akka deebifaman beekuuf jiru.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 69:40-43, 52:29-30, 68:2-4, 21:5, 37:36-37, 26:224-227, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - not + the + speech + of + a + poet; nor + is + it + the + speech + of + a + soothsayer; madman; thou + art + not + by + grace + of + thy + lord + a + madman; poet. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
