What does the Qur'an say about fortune-telling and soothsayers?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 27:65 Say: NONE IN THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH KNOWETH THE UNSEEN SAVE GOD; and they know not when they will be raised again. In because it is the absolute exclusion and it covers every being in creation. ALSO CARRIED by Can the jinn know the future, according to the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
  2. 02 5:90–91 O ye who believe, strong drink and games of chance and idols AND DIVINING ARROWS are only an infamy of Satan's handiwork. Leave it aside that ye may succeed. Satan seeketh only to cast among you enmity and hatred by means of strong drink and games of chance, AND TO TURN YOU FROM THE REMEMBRANCE OF GOD. In as ONE PASSAGE because divination by arrows is named in a list of four and 5:91 gives the reason - it turns attention away. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about gambling?, with a different reason there.
  3. 03 69:40–43 That this is in truth the speech of an illustrious messenger. It is not poet's speech - little is it that ye believe. NOR DIVINER'S SPEECH - little is it that ye remember. It is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. In as ONE PASSAGE because the denial that the Qur'an is a diviner's speech presupposes that diviners existed and were a recognised category. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet not being a poet or possessed?, with a different reason there.
  4. 04 53:23–28 THEY ARE BUT NAMES WHICH YE HAVE NAMED... THEY FOLLOW BUT A GUESS AND THAT WHICH THEY THEMSELVES DESIRE... AND THEY HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE THEREOF. THEY FOLLOW BUT A GUESS, AND LO, A GUESS CAN NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF THE TRUTH. In as ONE PASSAGE because it states the epistemic rule that disposes of the whole practice. ALSO CARRIED by How do you tell a Qur'anic promise from a hadith virtue (fadila) from a folk claim?, with a different reason there.
  5. 05 72:26–27 HE IS THE KNOWER OF THE UNSEEN, AND HE REVEALETH UNTO NONE HIS SECRET, SAVE UNTO EVERY MESSENGER WHOM HE HATH CHOSEN. In as ONE PASSAGE because it names the only exception to the exclusion, and the exception is a messenger. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about believing in the unseen (al-ghayb)?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an closes this off at the root rather than by prohibiting practices one by one.

27:65: NONE IN THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH KNOWETH THE UNSEEN SAVE GOD. Nothing in creation - not jinn, not angels, not diviners. 72:26-27 states the one exception: He reveals His secret TO NONE, SAVE UNTO EVERY MESSENGER WHOM HE HATH CHOSEN.

If that is true, fortune-telling has no possible source, and the rest follows.

53:23-28 supplies the epistemic rule that finishes it: they follow BUT A GUESS AND WHAT THEIR SOULS DESIRE - and A GUESS CAN NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF THE TRUTH.

One practice is named directly. 5:90 lists DIVINING ARROWS alongside wine, gambling and idols as an infamy of Satan's handiwork - and 5:91 gives the harm: it sows enmity, and TURNS YOU FROM THE REMEMBRANCE OF GOD. The objection is to what it does to attention and to relationships, not to its efficacy.

69:42 is the verse that shows the category existed and mattered: the Qur'an is NOT DIVINER'S SPEECH. The denial is worth as much as a prohibition - it tells you that soothsayers were a recognised profession and that the revelation had to be distinguished from them.

And Can the jinn know the future, according to the Qur'an? supplies the mechanism the practice claimed: eavesdropping in the heavens, now intercepted, with only a snatched fragment getting through, pursued by a flame.

A snatched fragment, followed by conjecture, is the Qur'an's picture of how such claims are made.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 27:65, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

5:91 Στ’ αλήθεια, ο Σατανάς θέλει μόνο να σπείρει την εχθρότητα και το μίσος μεταξύ σας με το Αλ-Χαμρ (ό,τι μεθάει) και τα τυχερά παιχνίδια, και να σας εμποδίσει από τη μνημόνευση του Αλλάχ κι από την προσευχή! Θα απέχετε λοιπόν (απ' αυτά);

Talal Itani2012 God does not hold you accountable for your unintended oaths, but He holds you accountable for your binding oaths. The atonement for it is by feeding ten needy people from the average of what you feed your families, or by clothing them, or by freeing a slave. Anyone who lacks the means shall fast for three days. That is the atonement for breaking your oaths when you have sworn them. So keep your oaths. Thus God makes clear His Revelations to you, that you may be grateful.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Allah will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths, but He will take you to task for the oaths which ye swear in earnest. The expiation thereof is the feeding of ten of the needy with the average of that wherewith ye feed your own folk, or the clothing of them, or the liberation of a slave, and for him who findeth not (the wherewithal to do so) then a three days' fast. This is the expiation of your oaths when ye have sworn; and keep your oaths. Thus Allah expoundeth unto you His revelations in order that ye may give thanks

Edward Henry Palmer1880 God will not catch you up for a casual word in your oaths, but He will catch you up for having what ye make deliberate oaths about; and the expiation thereof is to feed ten poor men with the middling food ye feed your families withal, or to clothe them, or to free a neck; but he who has not the means, then let him fast three days. That is the expiation of your oaths, when ye have sworn to keep your oaths; thus does God explain to you His signs, - haply ye may be grateful

John Medows Rodwell1861 God will not punish you for a mistaken word in your oaths: but he will punish you in regard to an oath taken seriously. Its expiation shall be to feed ten poor persons with such middling food as ye feed your own families with, or to clothe them; or to set free a captive. But he who cannot find means, shall fast three days. This is the expiation of your oaths when ye shall have sworn. Keep then your oaths. Thus God maketh his signs clear to you, that ye may give thanks

George Sale1734 God will not take you to task for such of your oaths as are vain, but He will take you to task for breaking the oaths which you take in earnest. The expiation thereof, then, is the feeding of ten poor persons with such average food as you feed your families with, or the clothing of them or the freeing of a slave. But whoso finds not the means shall fast for three days. That is the expiation of your oaths when you have sworn. And keep your oaths. Thus does God explain to you His Signs that you may be grateful

Talal Itani2012 Those who believe and do righteous deeds will not be blamed for what they may have eaten, provided they obey, and believe, and do good deeds, then maintain piety and faith, then remain righteous and charitable. God loves the charitable.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 There shall be no sin (imputed) unto those who believe and do good works for what they may have eaten (in the past). So be mindful of your duty (to Allah), and believe, and do good works; and again: be mindful of your duty, and believe; and once again: be mindful of your duty, and do right. Allah loveth the good

Edward Henry Palmer1880 There is no crime in those who believe and do right, for having tasted food, when they fear God, and believe, and do what is right, and then fear Him, and believe, and then fear, and do good, for God loves those who do good

John Medows Rodwell1861 No blame shall attach to those who believe and do good works, in regard to any food they have taken, in case they fear God and believe, and do the things that are right, and shall still fear God and believe, and shall still fear him, and do good; for God loveth those who do good

53:24 A mos do të ketë njeriu atë që ai dëshiron?

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 27:65, 5:90-91, 69:40-43, 53:23-28, 72:26-27, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - nor + diviner's + speech; soothsayer; divining + arrows; they + follow + but + a + guess; knoweth + not + the + unseen + save + god. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 6 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:3 - the food law, taken up by the study What does the Qur'an declare unlawful to eat?; the arrows clause is carried by 5:90; 6:116 - carried by How do you tell a Qur'anic promise from a hadith virtue (fadila) from a folk claim?; 6:148 - the objectors' fatalism; 10:66 - near-identical to 53:28; 45:24 - a denial of the hereafter; 52:29 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet not being a poet or possessed?

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
