When We inspired your mother with the inspiration.
When did Pharaoh order the killing of Israelite sons (20:38-39 vs 40:25)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 20:38–39 Moses is reminded how his mother was inspired to put him in the ark and cast it into the river. Pickthall has "an enemy to Me and an enemy to him shall take him". These two verses give no reason for the casting.
- 02 28:4 In the passage that leads into the story of Moses' mother, the five print Pharaoh's oppression of one group. Itani has "slaughtering their sons, while sparing their daughters", and Rodwell has "He slew their male children".
- 03 28:7 The mother of Moses is told to cast him into the river. Itani has "when you fear for him, cast him into the river". The verse does not say what she fears.
- 04 40:24–25 At 40:24 Moses is sent to Pharaoh, Haman and Korah. At 40:25, when he came with the truth, they said: Pickthall has "Slay the sons of those who believe with him, and spare their women". Palmer alone has "when they came to them".
- 05 7:127 After Moses came, the chiefs of Pharaoh's people complain of him, and Pharaoh answers. Pickthall has "We will slay their sons and spare their women".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question asks when Pharaoh ordered the killing of Israelite sons: in the time of Moses' infancy, or after he came with his message, as at 40:25. The five renderings print a slaying of sons at both points.
28:4 prints it in the passage before Moses' mother casts him into the river. Itani has "slaughtering their sons, while sparing their daughters". At 28:7 Itani has "when you fear for him, cast him into the river". 20:38-39 tells the same casting and gives no reason for it.
40:25 is set after Moses was sent with signs. The speakers are those named at 40:24: Pharaoh, Haman and Korah. At 40:25 Pickthall has "Slay the sons of those who believe with him". The order is aimed at the sons of those who believe with Moses.
7:127 also sets a slaying of sons after Moses came. The chiefs complain of Moses, and Pickthall has Pharaoh answer "We will slay their sons and spare their women".
So the five print the deed at two points: as Pharaoh's oppression in the passage on Moses' infancy (28:4), and as an order after his mission began (40:25, 7:127). They do not say whether the first had stopped before the second.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 20:38–39, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Fir’awn Dachii keessatti uf tuulee ture. warra ishee garee garee taasise. Garee isaan irraa ta’e (ilmaan israa'iil) ni hacuuce. Ilmaan isaanii kan dhiiraa ni gorra'a; tan dubaraa immoo ni jiraachisa (nidhiisa). inni balleeysitoota irraa ture.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question sets 40:25 against the time of Moses' infancy at 20:38-39, so both are carried, 40:25 with 40:24, which names who speaks. 28:4 and 28:7 are carried because they print a slaying of sons in the passage on his infancy. A probe for the slaying of sons, run as the pattern '(slay\w*|slew|slaughter\w*|kill\w*)(\W+\w+){0,3}\W+(sons|male children|male-children)|(sons|male children|male-children)(\W+\w+){0,2}\W+slain', returns 30 lines at 6 verses, all five renderings at each. Three are carried: 28:4, 40:25 and 7:127, the last because it too sets an order after Moses came. The other three recall the slaying as an affliction from which Israel was delivered and do not place it in time, so they are not carried. This study does not date these events from outside the text.
