And to establish them in the land; and to show Pharaoh, Hamaan, and their troops, the very thing they feared.
Does the Qur'an misplace Haman in Pharaoh's court (28:38, 40:36)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 28:6 Pickthall has "Pharaoh and Haman and their hosts". Itani spells the name "Hamaan" in every verse of this set.
- 02 28:8 Itani has "Pharaoh, Hamaan, and their troops were sinners". The verse names them together as the family of Pharaoh takes up the child.
- 03 28:38 Pharaoh speaks to Haman by name and orders him to fire clay and build a tower. Rodwell has "Burn me then, Haman, bricks of clay, and build me a tower", and Sale has "do thou, O Haman, burn me clay into bricks".
- 04 40:24 Moses is sent to three named men. Pickthall has "Unto Pharaoh and Haman and Korah".
- 05 40:36–37 Pharaoh again addresses Haman. Pickthall has "O Haman! Build for me a tower". At 40:37 Pickthall gives the aim as "may look upon the god of Moses".
- 06 29:39 Haman is named with Korah and Pharaoh as those to whom Moses came. Pickthall has "Korah, Pharaoh and Haman", and Sale has "We likewise destroyed Karun, and Pharaoh, and Haman".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question compares where the Qur'an places Haman with where other writings place a man of that name. The five renderings can show only the first half: where the text puts him.
In every verse of this set Haman is named next to Pharaoh. At 28:6 and 28:8 Pickthall has "Pharaoh and Haman and their hosts". At 40:24 and 29:39 he is one of three, with Korah, to whom Moses was sent.
At 28:38 and 40:36 Pharaoh speaks to him by name and gives him a task: to fire clay into bricks and to build a tower. Sale has "O Haman, build me a tower". The aim Pharaoh gives, at 28:38 and 40:37, is to mount up to or look on the God of Moses.
The five give Haman no title or office. They print that Pharaoh gives him orders, that he is named with Pharaoh's hosts, and that Moses was sent to him. The word court is the question's word; none of the five uses it at these verses.
Whether a man of this name appears in other writings, and in what time and place, is a question of history. History is outside these five renderings, and this study does not answer it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 28:6, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Pharaoh exalted himself in the land, and divided its people into factions. He persecuted a group of them, slaughtering their sons, while sparing their daughters. He was truly a corrupter.
Lo! Pharaoh exalted himself in the earth and made its people castes. A tribe among them he oppressed, killing their sons and sparing their women. Lo! he was of those who work corruption
Verily, Pharaoh was lofty in the land and made the people thereof sects; one party of them he weakened, slaughtering their sons and letting their women live. Verily, he was of the despoilers
Now Pharaoh lifted himself up in the earth, and divided his people into parties: one portion of them he brought low - He slew their male children, and let their females only live; for he was one of those who wrought disorders
Now Pharaoh lifted himself up in the land of Egypt; and he caused his subjects to be divided into parties: He weakened one party of them, by slaying their male-children, and preserving their females alive; for he was an oppressor

The heart of Moses' mother became vacant. She was about to disclose him, had We not steadied her heart, that she may remain a believer.
And the heart of the mother of Moses became void, and she would have betrayed him if We had not fortified her heart, that she might be of the believers
And the heart of Moses' mother was void on the morrow; she well-nigh disclosed him, had it not been that we bound up her heart that she might be of the believers
And the heart of Moses' mother became a blank through fear: and almost had she discovered him, but that we girt up her heart with constancy, in order that she might be one of those who believe
And the heart of the mother of Moses became oppressed with fear; and she had almost discovered him, had We not armed her heart with constancy, that she might be one of those who believe the promises of God

Fir'awna wi'i: "eey mon dental, mi anndanaa on deweteeɗo, si wonaa min. Eey ma yo Haamaana, huɓɓinanam [yiite] e loopal ngal, mahiranaa kam huɓeere toownde, no gasa ka mi ƴellitoo e Deweteeɗo Muusaa On; tawde miɗo sikki mo e fenooɓe ɓen".
Fir’awna nijedhe “isin yaa qondaaltota! Ana malee gabbaramaa biraa isiniif hin beeku,Yaa Haamaan! Dhoqqee irratti ibidda naaf bobeessii (xuubii tolchi) gamoo dheeraa naaf godhi; gara Rabbii Muusaa olbahuun koo ni kajeelama. ani kijibdoota irraa ta’uun isa yaada” jedhe.

40:36 Fir'awna wi'i: " eey ma yo Haamaana, mahanam sooro, no gasa mi yottoo ɗate ɗen.
40:37 ɗate kammuuji ɗin, mi ƴeewoya Deweteeɗo Muusaa On; sabu mi sikki mo penoowo". Ko wano non Fir'awna duɗiranaa, golle makko bonɗe ɗen; o sakkaa e laawol (peewal) ngol. Feere Fir'awna nden wonaano, si wonaa e hayrere.
Akkan karaa ol ga’u gamoo (dheeraa) naaf ijaari.
40:37 Karaawwan samiilee (ol ba’eetan), gara Gooftaa Muusaa ilaala. Ani sobaa ta’uu isaan yaada.” Akka kanatti Fir’awniif hamtuun dalagaa isaa miidhagfamee, karaa (Rabbii) irraas dhorgame. Shirri Fir’awni hoongoo keessatti malee hin taane.
40:36 Farao sa: ”Hāmān, bygg ett högt torn åt mig, så att jag kan nå passagerna;
Faraos planer gick dock i spillror.

Joseph had come to you with clear revelations, but you continued to doubt what he came to you with. Until, when he perished, you said, "God will never send a messenger after him." Thus God leads astray the outrageous skeptic.
And verily Joseph brought you of old clear proofs, yet ye ceased not to be in doubt concerning what he brought you till, when he died, ye said: Allah will not send any messenger after him. Thus Allah deceiveth him who is a prodigal, a doubter
And Joseph came to you before with manifest signs, but ye ceased not to doubt concerning what he brought you, until, when he perished, ye said, "God will not send after him an apostle;" thus does God lead astray him who is extravagant, a doubter
Moreover, Joseph had come to you before with clear tokens, but ye ceased not to doubt of the message with which he came to you, until when he died, ye said, 'God will by no means raise up an apostle after him.' " Thus God misleadeth him who is the transgressor, the doubter
Joseph came unto you, before Moses, with evident signs; but ye ceased not to doubt of the religion which he preached unto you, until, when he died, ye said, God will by no means send another apostle, after him. Thus doth God cause him to err, who is a transgressor, and a sceptic

Those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without any warrant that hath come unto them, it is greatly hateful in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who believe. Thus doth Allah print on every arrogant, disdainful heart
Those who wrangle concerning the signs of God without authority having come to them are greatly hated by God and by those who believe; thus does God set a stamp upon the heart of every tyrant too big with pride
They who gainsay the signs of God without authority having come to them, are greatly hated by God and by those who believe. Thus God sealeth up every proud, contumacious heart

But they rejected him, so the tremor overtook them, and they were left motionless in their homes.
But they denied him, and the dreadful earthquake took them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling place
But they called him liar; and the convulsion seized them, and on the morrow they lay in their dwellings prone
But they treated him as an impostor: so an earthquake assailed them; and at morn they were found prostrate and dead in their dwellings
But they accused him of imposture; wherefore a storm from heaven assailed them, and in the morning they were found in their dwellings dead and prostrate

And Aad and Thamood. It has become clear to you from their dwellings. Satan embellished for them their deeds, barring them from the path, even though they could see.
And (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud! (Their fate) is manifest unto you from their (ruined and deserted) dwellings. Satan made their deeds seem fair unto them and so debarred them from the Way, though they were keen observers
And 'Ad and Thamud - but it is plain to you from their habitations; for Satan made seemly to them their works, and turned them from the way, sagacious though they were
And we destroyed Ad and Themoud. Already is this made plain to you in the ruins of their dwellings. For Satan had made their own works fair seeming to them, and drew them from the right path, keen-sighted though they were
And We also destroyed the tribes of Ad, and Thamud; and this is well known unto you from what yet remains of their dwellings. And Satan prepared their works for them, and turned them aside from the way of truth; although they were sagacious people

Each We seized by his sin. Against some We sent a sandstorm. Some were struck by the Blast. Some We caused the ground to cave in beneath them. And some We drowned. It was not God who wronged them, but it was they who wronged their own selves.
So We took each one in his sin; of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane, and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful) Cry, and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, and of them was he whom We drowned. It was not for Allah to wrong them, but they wronged themselves
And each of them we seized in his sin; and of them were some against whom we sent a sandstorm; and of them were some whom the noise seized; and of them were some with whom we cleaved the earth open; and of them were some we drowned: God would not have wronged them, but it was themselves they wronged
For, every one of them did we seize in his sin. Against some of them did we send a stone-charged wind: Some of them did the terrible cry of Gabriel surprise: for some of them we cleaved the earth; and some of them we drowned. And it was not God who would deal wrongly by them, but they wronged themselves
Every of them did We destroy in his sin. Against some of them We sent a violent wind: Some of them did a terrible noise from heaven destroy: Some of them did We cause the earth to swallow up: And some of them We drowned. Neither was God disposed to treat them unjustly; but they dealt unjustly with their own souls

The likeness of those who take to themselves protectors other than God is that of the spider. It builds a house. But the most fragile of houses is the spider's house. If they only knew.
The likeness of those who choose other patrons than Allah is as the likeness of the spider when she taketh unto herself a house, and lo! the frailest of all houses is the spider's house, if they but knew
The likeness of those who take, beside God, patrons is as the likeness of a spider, that takes to himself a house; and, verily, the weakest of houses is a spider's house, if they did but know
The likeness for those who take to themselves guardians instead of God is the likeness of the SPIDER who buildeth her a house: But verily, frailest of all houses surely is the house of the spider. Did they but know this
The likness of those who take other patrons besides God, is as the likeness of the spider, which maketh herself a house: But the weakest of all houses surely is the house of the spider; if they knew this
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question names 28:38 and 40:36, so both are carried, 40:36 with 40:37, which completes the sentence. Probes were run on all five renderings, whole word. 'Haman|Hamaan' (Itani spells the name Hamaan) returns 31 lines at 7 verses. Six of those verses name him in all five, and all six are carried here. At the seventh, Palmer alone prints the name, where the other four print the name of a people; it is not carried. This study does not compare the text with other writings that use the name. That comparison is history, outside the five renderings.
