We have enjoined upon man kindness to his parents. His mother carried him with difficulty, and delivered him with difficulty. His bearing and weaning takes thirty months. Until, when he has attained his maturity, and has reached forty years, he says, "Lord, enable me to appreciate the blessings You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to act with righteousness, pleasing You. And improve my children for me. I have sincerely repented to You, and I am of those who have surrendered."
What does the Qur'an say about the status of the mother?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 46:15 And We have commended unto man kindness toward parents. HIS MOTHER BEARETH HIM WITH RELUCTANCE, AND BRINGETH HIM FORTH WITH RELUCTANCE, and the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months. In because the ground of the duty is stated as a physical cost borne by one parent and not the other. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about breastfeeding and its term? and the study What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?, with different reasons there.
- 02 31:14 And We have enjoined upon man concerning his parents - HIS MOTHER BEARETH HIM IN WEAKNESS UPON WEAKNESS, and his weaning is in two years - GIVE THANKS UNTO ME AND UNTO THY PARENTS. In because the phrase WEAKNESS UPON WEAKNESS is the strongest description of the cost, and because thanks to parents is put in the same clause as thanks to God. ALSO CARRIED by the study Who was Luqman, and what did he advise his son? and two other studies, with different reasons there.
- 03 58:2 Such of you as put away your wives by saying they are as their mothers - THEY ARE NOT THEIR MOTHERS. NONE ARE THEIR MOTHERS EXCEPT THOSE WHO GAVE THEM BIRTH. They indeed utter an ill word and a lie. In because it defends the category itself against a formula that borrowed it, and the correction is emphatic and twice stated.
- 04 28:7–13 And We inspired the mother of Moses: SUCKLE HIM AND, WHEN THOU FEAREST FOR HIM, THEN CAST HIM INTO THE RIVER, and fear not nor grieve. Lo, We shall bring him back to thee... AND THE HEART OF THE MOTHER OF MOSES BECAME VOID, and she would have betrayed him if We had not fortified her heart... So We restored him to his mother THAT SHE MIGHT BE COMFORTED AND NOT GRIEVE. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the fullest portrait of a mother in the Qur'an and the text records her emptied heart and her near-collapse without softening them. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about joy 'kept hidden' as a reward no soul knows?, with a different reason there.
- 05 33:6 The Prophet is closer to the believers than their selves, AND HIS WIVES ARE AS THEIR MOTHERS. In because it uses motherhood as the term for the highest relationship of respect the community is given. ALSO CARRIED by two earlier studies, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an grounds the mother's standing in something physical, and it says so twice in nearly the same words.
46:15: HIS MOTHER BEARETH HIM WITH RELUCTANCE, AND BRINGETH HIM FORTH WITH RELUCTANCE - the word all four translators reach for carries pain, hardship and unwillingness - and then a duration: thirty months of bearing and weaning.
31:14: HIS MOTHER BEARETH HIM IN WEAKNESS UPON WEAKNESS. And then, in the same verse: GIVE THANKS UNTO ME AND UNTO THY PARENTS. Thanks to God and thanks to parents in one clause, immediately after a description of pregnancy.
The argument is not from status. It is from cost, and the cost is named as one parent's.
58:2 defends the category itself. Men had been dismissing wives by declaring them as their mothers, and the Qur'an's answer is unusually blunt: THEY ARE NOT THEIR MOTHERS. NONE ARE THEIR MOTHERS EXCEPT THOSE WHO GAVE THEM BIRTH. The formula is called an ill word and a lie. The word mother is not available as a legal fiction.
28:7-13 is the fullest portrait, and it does not idealise. She is told to nurse him and then, WHEN THOU FEAREST FOR HIM, to put him in the river - the instruction runs through the fear rather than around it. And then: THE HEART OF THE MOTHER OF MOSES BECAME VOID, and she would have disclosed him had her heart not been fortified. The text records a mother nearly breaking.
And 33:6 uses motherhood as the term for the community's highest relationship of respect toward the Prophet's wives.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 46:15, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

And We have commended unto man kindness toward parents. His mother beareth him with reluctance, and bringeth him forth with reluctance, and the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months, till, when he attaineth full strength and reacheth forty years, he saith: My Lord! Arouse me that I may give thanks for the favour wherewith Thou hast favoured me and my parents, and that I may do right acceptable unto Thee. And be gracious unto me in the matter of my seed. Lo! I have turned unto Thee repentant, and lo! I am of those who surrender (unto Thee)
We have prescribed for man kindness towards his parents. His mother bore him with trouble and brought him forth with trouble; and the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months; until, when he reaches puberty, and reaches forty years, he says, 'Lord! stir me up that I may be thankful for thy favours wherewith thou hast favoured me and my parents; and that I may do right to please Thee; and make it right for me in my offspring; verily, I turn repentant unto Thee, and, verily, I am of those resigned
Moreover, we have enjoined on man to shew kindness to his parents. With pain his mother beareth him; with pain she bringeth him forth: and his bearing and his weaning is thirty months; until when he attaineth his strength, and attaineth to forty years, he saith, "O my Lord! stir me up to be grateful for thy favours wherewith thou hast favoured me and my parents, and to do good works which shall please thee: and prosper me in my offspring: for to thee am I turned, and am resigned to thy will" (am a Muslim)
We have commanded man to shew kindness to his parents: His mother beareth him in her womb with pain, and bringeth him forth with pain: And the space of his being carried in her womb, and of his weaning, is thirty months; until, when he attaineth his age of strength, and attaineth the age of forty years, he saith, O Lord, excite me, by thy inspiration, that I may be grateful for thy favours, wherewith thou hast favoured me and my parents; and that I may work righteousness, which may please thee: And be gracious unto me in my issue; for I am turned unto thee, and am a Moslem

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.
CLEARED. Licence read verbatim from the block embedded in this very file. Ingested exactly as shipped: no normalisation, no stripping of marks, no Unicode recomposition.

28:7 I Mi nadahnusmo Musaovu majku: “Doji ga, a kad se uplašiš za njegov život, baci ga u rijeku, i ne strahuj i ne tuguj, Mi ćemo ti ga, doista, vratiti i poslanikom ga učiniti.”
28:8 I nađoše ga faraonovi ljudi, da im postane dušmanin i jad; zaista su faraon i Haman i vojske njihove uvijek griješili.
28:9 I žena faraonova reče: “On će biti radost i meni i tebi!
I ona ga ugleda izdaleka, a oni nisu bili ništa primijetili.

I ona ga ugleda izdaleka, a oni nisu bili ništa primijetili.

Once he entered the city, unnoticed by its people. He found in it two men fighting-one of his own sect, and one from his enemies. The one of his sect solicited his assistance against the one from his enemies; so Moses punched him, and put an end to him. He said, "This is of Satan's doing; he is an enemy that openly misleads."

The Prophet is more caring of the believers than they are of themselves, and his wives are mothers to them. And blood-relatives are closer to one another in God's Book than the believers or the emigrants, though you should do good to your friends. That is inscribed in the Book.
Compare translations (4)
The Prophet is closer to the believers than their selves, and his wives are (as) their mothers. And the owners of kinship are closer one to another in the ordinance of Allah than (other) believers and the fugitives (who fled from Mecca), except that ye should do kindness to your friends. This is written in the Book (of nature)
The prophet is nearer of kin to the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers. And blood relations are nearer in kin to each other by the Book of God than the believers and those who fled; only your doing kindness to your kindred, that is traced in the Book
Nearer of kin to the faithful is the Prophet, than they are to their own selves. His wives are their mothers. According to the Book of God, they who are related by blood, are nearer the one to the other than other believers, and than those who have fled their country for the cause of God: but whatever kindness ye shew to your kindred, shall be noted down in the Book
The prophet is nigher unto the true believers than their own souls; and his wives are their mothers. Those who are related by consanguinity are nigher of kin the one of them unto the others, according to the book of God, than the other true believers, and the Mohajerun: Unless that ye do what is fitting and reasonable to your relations in general. This is written in the book of God

God did not place two hearts inside any man's body. Nor did He make your wives whom you equate with your mothers, your actual mothers. Nor did He make your adopted sons, your actual sons. These are your words coming out of your mouths. God speaks the truth, and guides to the path.
Allah hath not assigned unto any man two hearts within his body, nor hath He made your wives whom ye declare (to be your mothers) your mothers, nor hath He made those whom ye claim (to be your sons) your sons. This is but a saying of your mouths. But Allah saith the truth and He showeth the way
God has not made for any man two hearts in his inside; nor has He made your wives,- whom you back away from,- your real mothers; nor has He made your adopted sons your real sons. That is what ye speak with your mouths; but God speaks the truth and He guides to the path
God hath not given a man two hearts within him; neither hath he made your wives whom ye divorce to be as your mothers; nor hath he made your adopted sons to be as your own sons. Such words are indeed in your mouths; but God speaketh the truth, and in the right way He guideth
God hath not given a man two hearts within him; neither hath he made your wives -- some of whom ye divorce, regarding them thereafters as your mothers -- your true mothers; nor hath he made your adopted sons your true sons. This is your saying in your mouths: But God speaketh the truth ; and he directeth the right way

Call them after their fathers; that is more equitable with God. But if you do not know their fathers, then your brethren in faith and your friends. There is no blame on you if you err therein, barring what your hearts premeditates. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
Proclaim their real parentage. That will be more equitable in the sight of Allah. And if ye know not their fathers, then (they are) your brethren in the faith, and your clients. And there is no sin for you in the mistakes that ye make unintentionally, but what your hearts purpose (that will be a sin for you). Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful
Call them by their fathers' names; that is more just in God's sight; but if ye know not their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and your clients. There is no crime against you for what mistakes ye make therein; but what your hearts do purposely - but God is ever forgiving and merciful
Name them after their fathers: this will be more right before God. But if ye know not who their fathers are, then let them be your brethren in the faith, and your comrades. And unless made with intent of heart, mistakes in this matter shall be no crime in you: for God is Lenient, Merciful
Call such as are adopted, the sons of their natural fathers: This will be more just in the sight of God. And if ye know not their fathers, let them be as your brethren in religion, and your companions: And it shall be no crime in you, that ye err in this matter; but that shall be criminal which your hearts purposely design; for God is gracious and merciful

Recall that We received a pledge from the prophets, and from you, and from Noah, and Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus son of Mary. We received from them a solemn pledge.

That He may ask the sincere about their sincerity. He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.
That He may ask the loyal of their loyalty. And He hath prepared a painful doom for the unfaithful
that He might ask the truth-tellers of their truth. But He has prepared for those who misbelieve a grievous woe
That God may question the men of truth as to their truth. But a sore torment hath He prepared for the unbelievers
that God may examine the speakers of truth concerning their veracity: And He hath prepared a painful torment for the unbelievers
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 46:15, 31:14, 58:2, 28:7-13, 33:6, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - his + mother + beareth + him + with + reluctance; his + mother + beareth + him + in + weakness + upon + weakness; we + have + commended + unto + man + kindness + toward + parents; their + mothers + are + those + who + gave + them + birth. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
