What does the Qur'an say about the times of the daily prayers?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 11:114 The two ends of the day and some watches of the night. Carried as the simplest of the time-markings. ALSO CARRIED by Are the five daily prayers named in the Qur'an?
  2. 02 17:78–79 From the going down of the sun until the dark of night, and the recital of the Qur'an at dawn - LO! THE RECITAL AT DAWN IS EVER WITNESSED. In as ONE PASSAGE with 17:79 because the night vigil clause follows directly. Carried as the fullest single marking. ALSO CARRIED by Are the five daily prayers named in the Qur'an? and What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?
  3. 03 20:130 Ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof, and some hours of the night, and at the two ends of the day. This is here because it stacks four markers in one verse. ALSO CARRIED by Are the five daily prayers named in the Qur'an?
  4. 04 30:17–18 In as ONE PASSAGE because the sentence runs across both verses: glory be to Allah when ye enter the night and when ye enter the morning - and unto Him be praise, AT THE SUN'S DECLINE AND IN THE NOONDAY. Carried because it supplies the two markers the other verses leave out, and completes the daily round.
  5. 05 24:58 CARRIED WITH ITS SUBJECT NAMED: a verse about asking permission to enter, which marks three moments of privacy by reference to the dawn prayer, the noon rest, and the night prayer. Carried for those three markers. ALSO CARRIED by Are the five daily prayers named in the Qur'an?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Laid side by side, these five verses mark out a day, and the marking is done by the sun rather than by a clock.

11:114: the two ends of the day, and watches of the night. 17:78: from the sun's decline until the darkness of night, and the dawn recital. 20:130: before sunrise, before sunset, hours of the night, the two ends of the day. 30:17-18: when you enter the night and when you enter the morning, and at the sun's decline and at noon. 24:58, in passing and for another purpose entirely, names a dawn prayer, a noon interval and a night prayer.

Pool them and every part of the daylight round is marked - dawn, noon, the sun's decline, sunset, and into the night. That is a real result, and it is why the traditional times are not floating free of the text.

But two things should be said plainly to a reader trying to get from these verses to a timetable.

The markers are DESCRIPTIONS, not definitions. The going down of the sun, the darkness of the night, the two ends of the day - these do not have edges. Working out where one window ends and the next begins requires decisions the verses do not make.

And the verses do not add up on their own. It takes putting five passages from five surahs together, choosing how to read the two ends of the day, and deciding whether a phrase marks a prayer or the time of day - before anything like a schedule appears. The schedule that exists, and the precise boundaries every mosque uses, come from the Prophet's practice, transmitted in and settled by the schools of law. This platform holds none of that material: no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit, so we cannot show you one report of it.

The companion study asks whether the five prayers are NAMED. This one asks what times the text marks, and the answer is: most of them, repeatedly, and never with an edge.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 11:114, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

O you who believe! Permission must be requested by your servants and those of you who have not reached puberty. On three occasions: before the Dawn Prayer, and at noon when you change your clothes, and after the Evening Prayer. These are three occasions of privacy for you. At other times, it is not wrong for you or them to intermingle with one another. God thus clarifies the revelations for you. God is Knowledgeable and Wise.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

O ye who believe! Let your slaves, and those of you who have not come to puberty, ask leave of you at three times (before they come into your presence): Before the prayer of dawn, and when ye lay aside your raiment for the heat of noon, and after the prayer of night. Three times of privacy for you. It is no sin for them or for you at other times, when some of you go round attendant upon others (if they come into your presence without leave). Thus Allah maketh clear the revelations for you. Allah is Knower, Wise

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

O ye who believe! let those whom your right hands possess, and those amongst you who have not reached puberty, ask leave of you three times: before the prayer of dawn, and when ye put off your clothes at noon, and after the evening prayer;- three times of privacy for you: there is no crime on either you or them after these while ye are continually going one about the other. Thus does God explain to you His signs, for God is knowing, wise

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

O ye who believe! let your slaves, and those of you who have not come of age, ask leave of you, three times a day, ere they come into your presence; - before the morning prayer, and when ye lay aside your garments at mid-day, and after the evening prayer. These are your three times of privacy. No blame shall attach to you or to them, if after these times, when ye go your rounds of attendance on one another, they come in without permission. Thus doth God make clear to you His signs: and God is Knowing, Wise

George Sale published 1734

O true believers, let your slaves and those among you who shall not have attained the age of puberty, ask leave of you, before they come into your presence, three times in the day; namely, before the morning prayer, and when ye lay aside your garments at noon, and after the evening prayer. These are the three times for you to be private: It shall be no crime in you, or in them, if they go into you without asking permission after these times, while ye are in frequent attendance, the one of you on the other. Thus God declareth his signs unto you; for God is knowing and wise

Talal Itani2012 When the children among you reach puberty, they must ask permission, as those before them asked permission. God thus clarifies His revelations for you. God is Knowledgeable and Wise.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And when the children among you come to puberty then let them ask leave even as those before them used to ask it. Thus Allah maketh clear His revelations for you. Allah is Knower, Wise

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And when your children reach puberty let them ask leave as those before them asked leave. Thus does God explain to you His signs, for God is knowing, wise

John Medows Rodwell1861 And when your children come of age, let them ask leave to come into your presence, as they who were before them asked it. Thus doth God make clear to you his signs: and God is Knowing, Wise

George Sale1734 And when your children attain the age of puberty, let them ask leave to come into your presence at all times, in the same manner as those who have attained that age before them, ask leave. Thus God declareth his signs unto you; and God is knowing and wise

24:60

Talal Itani2012 Women past the age of childbearing, who have no desire for marriage, commit no wrong by taking off their outer clothing, provided they do not flaunt their finery. But to maintain modesty is better for them. God is Hearing and Knowing.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 As for women past child-bearing, who have no hope of marriage, it is no sin for them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show adornment. But to refrain is better for them. Allah is Hearer, Knower

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And those women who have stopped (child-bearing), who do not hope for a match, it is no crime on them that they put off their clothes so as not to display their ornaments; but that they abstain is better for them, for God both hears and knows

John Medows Rodwell1861 As to women who are past childbearing, and have no hope of marriage, no blame shall attach to them if they lay aside their outer garments, but so as not to shew their ornaments. Yet if they abstain from this, it will be better for them: and God Heareth, Knoweth

George Sale1734 As to such women as are past child-bearing, who hope not to marry again, because of their advanced age; it shall be no crime in them, if they lay aside their outer garments, not shewing their ornaments; but if they abstain from this, it will be better for them. God both heareth and knoweth

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 11:114, 17:78-79, 20:130, 30:17-18, 24:58, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

Ibn Kathir
