Perform the prayer at the borders of the day, and during the approaches of the night. The good deeds take away the bad deeds. This is a reminder for those who remember.
What does the Qur'an say about good deeds wiping out bad ones?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 11:114 Establish worship at the two ends of the day and in some watches of the night. LO, GOOD DEEDS ANNUL ILL DEEDS. This is a reminder for the mindful. In because it is the verse the doctrine rests on, it is four words long in the clause that matters, and it arrives attached to prayer at particular times.
- 02 4:31 IF YE AVOID THE GREAT THINGS WHICH YE ARE FORBIDDEN, WE WILL REMIT FROM YOU YOUR EVIL DEEDS and make you enter at a noble gate. In because it states a different mechanism - avoiding the major wrongs remits the lesser - and because it is a conditional, not an exchange.
- 03 25:68–70 And those who cry not unto any other god along with God, nor take the life which God hath forbidden save in course of justice, nor commit adultery... SAVE HIM WHO REPENTETH AND BELIEVETH AND DOTH RIGHTEOUS WORK; AS FOR SUCH, GOD WILL CHANGE THEIR EVIL DEEDS TO GOOD DEEDS. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the strongest statement in the book - not erasure but conversion - and because the offences it follows are the gravest. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about repentance changing an outcome?, with a different reason there.
- 04 66:8 Turn unto God in sincere repentance. IT MAY BE that your Lord will REMIT FROM YOU YOUR EVIL DEEDS and bring you into gardens. In because it attaches the remission to repentance and declines to guarantee it. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again? and the study What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?, with different reasons there.
- 05 29:7 And as for those who believe and do good works, WE SHALL REMIT FROM THEM THEIR EVIL DEEDS and shall repay them the best of what they used to do. In because it pairs remission with reward in one sentence, so that the erasing is not the whole of what is promised.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The sentence everyone quotes is four words long and it sits inside an instruction about prayer.
11:114: establish worship at the two ends of the day and in some watches of the night - LO, GOOD DEEDS ANNUL ILL DEEDS. The claim arrives attached to a specific practice at specific times, not as a general principle of moral accounting.
The rest of the set gives three different mechanisms, and they are not the same.
4:31 is conditional and structural: IF YE AVOID THE GREAT THINGS WHICH YE ARE FORBIDDEN, WE WILL REMIT FROM YOU YOUR EVIL DEEDS. The lesser wrongs are remitted on condition of avoiding the greater. Nothing is exchanged; a threshold is met.
66:8 and 29:7 attach remission to repentance and to faith with good works, and 66:8 is careful to say IT MAY BE rather than promising.
And 25:70 goes furthest of all, and it follows the gravest offences the surah has just listed: whoever repents and believes and does righteous work - GOD WILL CHANGE THEIR EVIL DEEDS TO GOOD DEEDS. Not cancelled. Exchanged.
29:7 adds the detail that keeps this from being merely negative: We shall remit their evil deeds AND REPAY THEM THE BEST OF WHAT THEY USED TO DO.
What the Qur'an does not supply is arithmetic. There is no rate, no tally, and no verse saying a given good outweighs a given bad. The tenfold multiplication of good deeds is taken up by the study Does the Qur'an say a good deed is multiplied ten times over? and is not carried here.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 11:114, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And covet not the thing in which Allah hath made some of you excel others. Unto men a fortune from that which they have earned, and unto women a fortune from that which they have earned. (Envy not one another) but ask Allah of His bounty. Lo! Allah is ever Knower of all things
And do not covet that by which God has preferred one of you over another. The men shall have a portion of what they earn, and the women a portion of what they earn; ask God for His grace, verily, God knows all
Covet not the gifts by which God hath raised some of you above others. The men shall have a portion according to their deserts, and the women a portion according to their deserts. Of God, therefore, ask his gifts. Verily, God hath knowledge of all things
Covet not that which God hath bestowed on some of you preferably to others. Unto the men shall be given a portion, of what they shall have gained, and unto the women shall be given a portion, of what they shall have gained: Therefore ask God of his bounty; for God is omniscient

O you who believe! Repent to God with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remit your sins, and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the Day when God will not disappoint the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light streaming before them, and to their right, they will say, "Our Lord, complete our light for us, and forgive us; You are capable of all things."

O credenti!

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 11:114, 4:31, 25:68-70, 66:8, 29:7, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - good + deeds + annul + ill + deeds; good + deeds + drive + away + evil + deeds; remit + from + you + your + evil + deeds; will + change + their + evil + deeds + to + good + deeds. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:12 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the Children of Israel and their covenant?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
