We send down in the Quran healing and mercy for the believers, but it increases the wrongdoers only in loss.
What does the Qur'an say about being 'a healing and a mercy'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 17:82 And WE REVEAL OF THE QUR'AN THAT WHICH IS A HEALING AND A MERCY FOR BELIEVERS, THOUGH IT INCREASE THE EVIL-DOERS IN NAUGHT SAVE RUIN. This verse is where the claim is made, and it is careful in two ways: it says We reveal OF the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy, not that the whole of it is; and it says the same revelation increases the evil-doers in nothing but ruin. The studies on the Qur’an as healing and on the virtues of particular verses carry it too.
- 02 10:57 O mankind, there hath come unto you an exhortation from your Lord, A BALM FOR THAT WHICH IS IN THE BREASTS, and a guidance and a mercy for believers. This verse names where the healing is said to act — what is in the breasts — and it addresses all mankind while reserving the guidance and the mercy for believers.
- 03 41:44 Say: for those who believe it is A GUIDANCE AND A HEALING; and as for those who disbelieve, THERE IS A DEAFNESS IN THEIR EARS, AND IT IS BLINDNESS FOR THEM. Such are called to from afar. This verse states the double effect most sharply: a guidance and a healing for those who believe, and for those who do not, a deafness in the ears and a blindness. The study on clear Arabic carries it too, for a different reason.
- 04 9:14 Fight them! God will chastise them at your hands, and He will lay them low and give you victory over them, AND HE WILL HEAL THE BREASTS OF FOLK WHO ARE BELIEVERS. This verse uses the same word for healing in a wholly different setting — the breasts of believing folk, after a battle — which shows the word is not reserved for what the text does to a reader.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur’an describes what is revealed as healing and mercy for believers (17:82) and as instruction, healing for what is in the breasts, guidance and mercy (10:57). Qur’an 41:44 similarly calls it guidance and healing for those who believe while describing others as unreceptive. In these passages, the immediate object is the inner life: doubt, moral disorder, estrangement and the need for guidance.
The language can include comfort and spiritual restoration, but the verses do not promise that recitation will cure every physical or mental illness, replace treatment or produce the same outcome for every listener. Qur’an 17:82 itself says that the same revelation can increase the loss of wrongdoers, so its effect is not described as mechanically therapeutic.
The responsible conclusion is that the Qur’an claims a healing role through guidance, remembrance and mercy, especially for the heart and moral condition. Broader practices of ruqyah and claims attached to particular verses come from later tradition. AALAMIN should add a clear health note: spiritual recitation may accompany, but should not replace, qualified medical or psychological care.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 17:82, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

A foreign tongue and an Arab? - Say unto them (O Muhammad): For those who believe it is a guidance and a healing; and as for those who disbelieve, there is a deafness in their ears, and it is blindness for them. Such are called to from afar
And had we made it a foreign Qur'an, they would have said, 'Unless its signs be detailed. .. . What! foreign and Arabic?' Say, 'It is, for those who believe, a guidance and a healing. But those who believe not, in their ears is dullness, and it is blindness to them; these are called to from a far-off place
Had we made it a Koran in a foreign tongue, they had surely said, "Unless its signs be made clear . . . ! What! in a foreign tongue? and the people Arabian?" SAY: It is to those who believe a guide and a medicine; but as to those who believe not, there is a thickness in their ears, and to them it is a blindness: they are like those who are called to from afar
If We had revealed the Koran in a foreign language, they had surely said, unless the signs thereof be distinctly explained, we will not receive the same: Is the book written in a foreign tongue, and the person unto whom it is directed, an Arabian? Answer, it is, unto those who believe, a sure guide, and a remedy for doubt and uncertainty: But unto those who believe not, it is a thickness of hearing in their ears, and it is a darkness which covereth them; these are as they who are called unto from a distant place

Nothing is said to you but was said to the Messengers before you: your Lord is Possessor of Forgiveness, and Possessor of Painful Repayment.
Naught is said unto thee (Muhammad) save what was said unto the messengers before thee. Lo! thy Lord is owner of forgiveness, and owner (also) of dire punishment
Naught is said to thee but what was said to the apostles before thee, 'Verily, thy Lord is Lord of forgiveness and Lord of grievous torment
Nothing hath been said to thee which hath not been said of old to apostles before thee. Verily with thy Lord is forgiveness, and with Him is terrible retribution

We gave Moses the Book, but disputes arose concerning it. Were it not for a prior decree from your Lord, judgment would have been pronounced between them. But they are in perplexing doubt concerning it.
And We verily gave Moses the Scripture, but there hath been dispute concerning it; and but for a Word that had already gone forth from thy Lord, it would ere now have been judged between them; but lo! they are in hopeless doubt concerning it
And we gave Moses the Book, and it was disputed about; but had it not been for thy Lord's word already passed it would have been decided between them, for, verily, they were in hesitating doubt thereon
Of old we gave the Book to Moses, and disputes arose about it: and if a decree of respite from thy Lord had gone before, there would surely have been a decision between them: for great were their doubts and questionings about it
We heretofore gave the book of the law unto Moses; and a dispute arose concerning the same: And if a previous decree had not proceeded from thy Lord, to respite the opposers of that revelation, verily the matter had been decided between them, by the destruction of the infidels; for they were in a very great doubt as to the same

وَيُذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَيَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

And He will remove the anger of their hearts. God redeems whomever He wills. God is Knowledgeable and Wise.
And He will remove the anger of their hearts. Allah relenteth toward whom He will. Allah is Knower, Wise
and will remove rage from their hearts; for God turns unto Him whomsoever He pleases, and God is knowing, wise
And will take away the wrath of their hearts. God will be turned unto whom He will: and God is Knowing, Wise
and will take away the indignation of their hearts: For God will be turned unto whom He pleaseth; and God is knowing and wise

The translators word this verse differently
Or do you think that you will be left alone, without God identifying which of you will strive, and take no supporters apart from God, His Messenger, and the believers? God is well Aware of what you do.
Or deemed ye that ye would be left (in peace) when Allah yet knoweth not those of you who strive, choosing for familiar none save Allah and His messenger and the believers? Allah is Informed of what ye do
Did ye reckon that ye would be left, when God knows not as yet those of you who fought strenuously, and who did not take other than God and His Apostle, and the believers for an intimate friend? for God is well aware of what ye do
Think ye that ye shall be forsaken as if God did not yet know those among you who do valiantly, and take none for their friends beside God, and His Apostle, and the faithful? God is well apprised of your doings
Did ye imagine that ye should be abandoned, whereas God did not yet know those among you who fought for his religion, and took not any besides God, and his apostle, and the faithful for their friends? God is well acquainted with that which ye do

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 17:82, 10:57, 41:44, 9:14, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - a + healing + and + a + mercy; healing + for + that + which + is + in + the + breasts; guidance + and + a + healing; increase + the + evil-doers + in + naught + save + ruin. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed earlier, and this study's inclusion reasons were rewritten as plain English. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
