And they say, "Tales of the ancients; he wrote them down; they are dictated to him morning and evening."
Did the Qur'an simply borrow its stories from the Bible?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 25:5 And they say: fables of the men of old which he hath had written down, so that they are dictated to him morn and evening. In because it is the accusation in its fullest form - not just old stories, but a dictation arrangement - and it is quoted in the text as an objection.
- 02 8:31 When Our revelations are recited they say: we have heard; if we wish we can speak the like of this; this is naught but fables of the men of old. In because the same charge is joined to a boast that it could be reproduced.
- 03 68:15 When Our revelations are recited unto him he saith: mere fables of the men of old. In because the repetition across surahs shows this was the standing objection, not an isolated remark.
- 04 16:103 We know well that they say: only a man teacheth him. The speech of him at whom they falsely hint is outlandish, and this is clear Arabic speech. In because it names a specific alleged human source and answers it on linguistic grounds.
- 05 44:14 They turned away from him and said: one taught (by others), a madman. In because it records the same accusation in a compressed form and pairs it with a second charge.
- 06 41:44 Had We appointed it a Lecture in a foreign tongue they would have said: if only its verses were expounded - what! a foreign tongue and an Arab? In because it turns the language question back on the objectors and shows the text arguing about its own medium.
- 07 6:91 They measure not the power of God its true measure when they say: God hath revealed naught unto a human being. Say: who revealed the Book which Moses brought? In because it is the text answering by APPEALING to the earlier scripture rather than distancing itself from it.
- 08 3:3 He hath revealed unto thee the Scripture with truth, CONFIRMING that which was (revealed) before it, even as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel. In because it is the Qur'an's own account of its relation to the earlier books, and the word is confirming, not replacing or borrowing.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The accusation is IN the Qur'an. That is the first thing worth knowing, and it changes the shape of the question.
Five of these verses quote the charge rather than answer it. Fables of the men of old (8:31, 68:15, and in the dropped near-duplicates 16:24 and 83:13). 25:5 makes it concrete - stories he has had WRITTEN DOWN and dictated to him morning and evening. 16:103 and 44:14 name a human teacher: only a man teaches him; one taught by others. Whoever compiled this text preserved the objection that it was assembled from older material, in the objectors' own words, repeatedly.
The answers given are of two kinds, and neither is a denial of overlap.
The first is linguistic and rather narrow. 16:103 says the man being hinted at speaks outlandishly, and this is clear Arabic. 41:44 pushes back on the same axis - if it had come in a foreign tongue you would have complained about that instead.
The second is the one that matters, and it concedes the continuity rather than resisting it. 3:3 says this Scripture comes CONFIRMING what was before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel. 6:91 answers people who say God has revealed nothing to a human being by pointing at Moses' Book: who revealed that? The text's own position is not that it is unrelated to the earlier scriptures. It is that it belongs to the same series.
So the question as usually posed - borrowed, yes or no - is not the question the text is arguing about. Whether the overlaps are literary dependence, shared oral tradition, or the continuity the text claims for itself is a HISTORICAL question, and the academic-historical layer is not built. That is a stated absence, not a verdict. The study Does the Qur'an say earlier scriptures were changed (tahrif)? takes up the related question of whether earlier scriptures were altered.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 25:5, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation
8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Were we to relieve you from the plague even a little, ye would certainly relapse
We will take the plague from off you, a little: But ye will certainly return to your infidelity

The Day when We launch the Great Assault-We will avenge.
On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish
On the day when we will assault with the great assault, verily, we will take vengeance
On the day when we shall fiercely put forth our great fierceness, we will surely take vengeance on them

Had We made it a Quran in a foreign language, they would have said, "If only its verses were made clear." Non-Arabic and an Arab? Say, "For those who believe, it is guidance and healing. But as for those who do not believe: there is heaviness in their ears, and it is blindness for them. These are being called from a distant place."

And if We had appointed it a Lecture in a foreign tongue they would assuredly have said: If only its verses were expounded (so that we might understand)? What! A foreign tongue and an Arab? - Say unto them (O Muhammad): For those who believe it is a guidance and a healing; and as for those who disbelieve, there is a deafness in their ears, and it is blindness for them. Such are called to from afar
And had we made it a foreign Qur'an, they would have said, 'Unless its signs be detailed. .. . What! foreign and Arabic?' Say, 'It is, for those who believe, a guidance and a healing. But those who believe not, in their ears is dullness, and it is blindness to them; these are called to from a far-off place
Had we made it a Koran in a foreign tongue, they had surely said, "Unless its signs be made clear . . . ! What! in a foreign tongue? and the people Arabian?" SAY: It is to those who believe a guide and a medicine; but as to those who believe not, there is a thickness in their ears, and to them it is a blindness: they are like those who are called to from afar
If We had revealed the Koran in a foreign language, they had surely said, unless the signs thereof be distinctly explained, we will not receive the same: Is the book written in a foreign tongue, and the person unto whom it is directed, an Arabian? Answer, it is, unto those who believe, a sure guide, and a remedy for doubt and uncertainty: But unto those who believe not, it is a thickness of hearing in their ears, and it is a darkness which covereth them; these are as they who are called unto from a distant place

We gave Moses the Book, but disputes arose concerning it. Were it not for a prior decree from your Lord, judgment would have been pronounced between them. But they are in perplexing doubt concerning it.
And We verily gave Moses the Scripture, but there hath been dispute concerning it; and but for a Word that had already gone forth from thy Lord, it would ere now have been judged between them; but lo! they are in hopeless doubt concerning it

Who does greater wrong than someone who invents falsehood against God, or says, "It was revealed to me," when nothing was revealed to him, or says, "I will reveal the like of what God revealed"? If only you could see the wrongdoers in the floods of death, as the angels with arms outstretched: "Give up your souls. Today you are being repaid with the torment of shame for having said about God other than the truth, and for being too proud to accept His revelations."
Who is guilty of more wrong than he who forgeth a lie against Allah, or saith: I am inspired, when he is not inspired in aught; and who saith: I will reveal the like of that which Allah hath revealed? If thou couldst see, when the wrong-doers reach the pangs of death and the angels stretch their hands out (saying): Deliver up your souls. This day ye are awarded doom of degradation for that ye spake concerning Allah other than the truth, and used to scorn His portents
Who is more unjust than he who devises against God a lie, or says, 'I am inspired,' when he was not inspired at all? and who says, 'I will bring down the like of what God has sent down;' but didst thou see when the unjust are in the floods of death, and the angels stretch forth their hands, 'Give ye forth your souls; today shall ye be recompensed with the torment of disgrace, for that ye did say against God what was not true, and were too proud to hear His signs
But is any more wicked than he who deviseth a lie of God, or saith, "I have had a revelation," when nothing was revealed to him? And who saith, "I can bring down a book like that which God hath sent down"? But couldst thou see when the ungodly are in the floods of death, and the angels reach forth their hands, saying, "Yield up your souls: - this day shall ye be recompensed with a humiliating punishment for your untrue sayings about God, and for proudly rejecting his signs
And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against God, or says, 'It has been revealed to me,' while nothing has been revealed to him; and who says, 'I will sent down the like of that which God has sent down?' And if thou couldst only see, when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death, and the angels stretch forth their hands, saying, 'Yield up your souls. Nothing is hidden from God, on earth or in the heaven.
Lo! nothing in the earth or in the heavens is hidden from Allah
Verily, God, there is nothing hidden from Him in the earth, nor in the heaven
God! nought that is in Earth or that is in Heaven, is hidden unto Him
Surely nothing is hidden from God, of that which is on earth, or in heaven

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 25:5, 8:31, 68:15, 16:103, 44:14, 41:44, 6:91, 3:3, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - tales + ancients; fables + ancients; taught + mortal; taught + man; foreign + tongue; forged + assisted; confirming + torah; confirmation + torah. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 10 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 2:102; 2:282; 5:46; 6:25; 16:24; 23:83; 27:68; 46:17; 83:13; 96:5. The reason for each was not recorded.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
