What does the Qur'an say about salvation for other faiths?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:62 Lo, THOSE WHO BELIEVE, AND THOSE WHO ARE JEWS, AND CHRISTIANS, AND SABAEANS - WHOEVER BELIEVETH IN GOD AND THE LAST DAY AND DOETH RIGHT - surely their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them, neither shall they grieve. In because it is the central verse, and because the condition it states is threefold and contains no requirement of affiliation.
  2. 02 5:69 Lo, those who believe, and those who are Jews, and Sabaeans, and Christians - whosoever believeth in God and the Last Day and doeth right, there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve. In because it repeats 2:62 in a different order in another surah, which makes it a settled formula rather than a single verse.
  3. 03 22:17 Lo, those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Sabaeans and the Christians and the Magians and the idolaters - GOD WILL DECIDE BETWEEN THEM ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION. In because it widens the list to six groups and then, instead of a promise, defers the whole question - which is the honest limit of what the text settles.
  4. 04 2:112 NAY, BUT WHOSOEVER SURRENDERETH HIS PURPOSE TO GOD WHILE DOING GOOD, HIS REWARD IS WITH HIS LORD; and there shall no fear come upon them. In because it states the same condition without naming any community at all.
  5. 05 4:123–124 It will not be in accordance with your desires, nor the desires of the People of the Scripture. HE WHO DOETH WRONG WILL HAVE THE RECOMPENSE THEREOF... And whoso doeth good works, whether male or female, and is a believer, such will enter paradise and they will not be wronged the dint in a date-stone. In as ONE PASSAGE because it explicitly refuses to let either community's wishes decide the matter.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

A note on method first, because this study nearly failed to find its own central verse.

The word rendered SABAEANS is spelled four different ways by the four translators - Sale writes Sabians, Rodwell writes Sabeites, Palmer and Pickthall write Sabaeans. Under a single-term rule not one of these verses would meet the selection rule. The declared synonym set carried all four spellings, and that is the only reason 2:62, 5:69 and 22:17 are here. It is the third time in this run that the synonym-set rule has rescued a study's key verse.

Now the verses. 2:62 and 5:69 say the same thing in two surahs: those who believe, and those who are Jews, and Christians, and Sabaeans - WHOEVER BELIEVES IN GOD AND THE LAST DAY AND DOES RIGHT - their reward is with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon them.

The condition stated is threefold and none of the three is membership of a community. The verse names four communities and then attaches the promise to belief in God, belief in the Last Day, and righteous action.

2:112 states the same condition with no communities named at all: whoever SURRENDERS HIS PURPOSE TO GOD WHILE DOING GOOD.

4:123-124 removes the question from anyone's preference: it will not be according to YOUR desires nor the desires of the People of the Scripture - the one who does wrong will be recompensed, and whoever does good works and is a believer, male or female, enters paradise.

And 22:17 is the honest limit. It lists six groups - adding Magians and idolaters - and then declines to say: GOD WILL DECIDE BETWEEN THEM ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION.

The study Does the Qur'an say non-Muslims are condemned to hell? carries the other side of this question, and the two should be read together.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:62, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Talal Itani2012 And recall when you said, "O Moses, we cannot endure one kind of food, so call to your Lord to produce for us of what the earth grows: of its herbs, and its cucumbers, and its garlic, and its lentils, and its onions." He said, "Would you substitute worse for better? Go down to Egypt, where you will have what you asked for." They were struck with humiliation and poverty, and incurred wrath from God. That was because they rejected God's revelations and wrongfully killed the prophets. That was because they disobeyed and transgressed.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And when ye said: O Moses! We are weary of one kind of food; so call upon thy Lord for us that He bring forth for us of that which the earth groweth - of its herbs and its cucumbers and its corn and its lentils and its onions. He said: Would ye exchange that which is higher for that which is lower? Go down to settled country, thus ye shall get that which ye demand. And humiliation and wretchedness were stamped upon them and they were visited with wrath from Allah. That was because they disbelieved in Allah's revelations and slew the prophets wrongfully. That was for their disobedience and transgression

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And when they said, 'O Moses, we cannot always bear one kind of food; pray then thy Lord to bring forth for us of what the earth grows, its green herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions.' Said he, 'Do ye ask what is meaner instead of what is best? Go down to Egypt,- there is what ye ask.' Then were they smitten with abasement and poverty, and met with wrath from God. That was because they had misbelieved in God's signs and killed the prophets undeservedly; that was for that they were rebellious and had transgressed

John Medows Rodwell1861 And when ye said, "O Moses! we will not put up with one sort of food: pray, therefore, thy Lord for us, that He would bring forth for us of that which the earth groweth, its herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions:" He said, "What! will ye exchange that which is worse for what is better? Get ye down into Egypt; - for ye shall have what ye have asked:" Vileness and poverty were stamped upon them, and they returned with wrath from God: This, for that they disbelieved the signs of God, and slew the Prophets unjustly: this, for that they rebelled and transgressed

George Sale1734 And when ye said, O Moses, we will by no means be satisfied with one kind of food; pray unto thy Lord therefore for us, that He would produce for us of that which the earth bringeth forth, herbs, and cucumbers, and garlick, and lentils, and onions; Moses answered, will ye exchange that which is better, for that which is worse? Get ye down in Egypt, for there shall ye find what ye desire: And they were smitten with vileness and misery, and drew on themselves indignation from God. This they suffered, because they believed not in the signs of God, and killed the prophets unjustly; this, because they rebelled and transgressed

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Then let him see whether his strategy dispelleth that whereat he rageth

Edward Henry Palmer1880 He who thinks that God will never help him in this world or the next - let him stretch a cord to the roof and put an end to himself; and let him cut it and see if his stratagem will remove what he is enraged at

John Medows Rodwell1861 Let him who thinketh that God will not help His Apostle in this world and in the next, stretch a cord aloft as if to destroy himself; then let him cut it, and see whether his devices can bring that to nought at which he was angry

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:62, 5:69, 22:17, 2:112, 4:123-124, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - sabians; sabeites; sabaeans; whosoever + believeth + in + god + and + the + last + day; no + fear + come + upon + them + neither + grieve. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 11 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:38 - the formula at the descent from the garden; 2:262 - the formula attached to charity; 2:274 - the same; 2:277 - the same; 3:170 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about martyrs after death?; 4:136 - an exhortation to believers; 6:48 - near-identical formula; 7:35 - near-identical; 7:49 - spoken in the Garden; 46:13 - near-identical; carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about fear - and its cure?; 65:2 - divorce procedure.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
