And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in the best manner possible, except those who do wrong among them. And say, "We believe in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to you; and our God and your God is One; and to Him we are submissive."
Does the Qur'an say its God is the God of Jews and Christians?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 29:46 The verse tells the reader how to speak with the People of the Scripture, and gives the words to say. Itani has "our God and your God is One", Pickthall has "our Allah and your Allah is One", and Sale has "our God and your God is one".
- 02 2:139 A reply to a dispute about God. Itani has "He is our Lord and your Lord", and Pickthall and Rodwell print the same words. Sale has "our Lord, and your Lord".
- 03 3:64 The People of the Book are invited to shared terms. Itani has "come to terms common between us and you: that we worship none but God", and Pickthall has "if they turn away".
- 04 42:15 Itani has "I believe in whatever Book God has sent down" and "God is our Lord and your Lord". Rodwell has the same claim in the reverse order, "God is your Lord and our Lord".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question asks whether the Qur'an presents its God as the God of Jews and Christians. The four verses here are where the five renderings address the People of the Book directly and speak of God as shared.
At 29:46 Itani, Pickthall, Rodwell and Sale print one sentence to be said to them. Palmer prints no command to say them: Palmer has "save with those who have been unjust amongst them and who say", so in Palmer the words "our God and your God is one" are printed as what those unjust ones say. Itani has "our God and your God is One". Pickthall prints the same sentence with the word Allah: Pickthall has "our Allah and your Allah is One". At 29:46 and 3:64 Pickthall addresses the "People of the Scripture", and Itani has "People of the Scripture" at 29:46 and "People of the Book" at 3:64. At 29:46 Sale has "those who have received the scriptures". None of the five names Jews or Christians at any of the four verses.
At 2:139 and 42:15 the renderings say "our Lord and your Lord", in Itani's words. Both verses add that each side keeps its own works: Itani has "We have our deeds, and you have your deeds". At 42:15 Itani also has "I believe in whatever Book God has sent down".
At 3:64 the shared God is the ground of an invitation. Itani has "come to terms common between us and you: that we worship none but God". The verse also prints that the hearers may decline: Pickthall has "if they turn away".
So four of the five renderings print, as words to be said, a plain yes to the words of the question: one God, named as the God of both sides; in Palmer the same words stand as what those he names say. Alongside it they print a call to worship Him alone, and the possibility of refusal. How Jewish or Christian writings describe God is a separate question of history, and these verses do not answer it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 29:46, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

If they believe in the same as you have believed in, then they have been guided. But if they turn away, then they are in schism. God will protect you against them; for He is the Hearer, the Knower.
And if they believe in the like of that which ye believe, then are they rightly guided. But if they turn away, then are they in schism, and Allah will suffice thee (for defence) against them. He is the Hearer, the Knower
If they believe in that in which ye believe, then are they guided; but if they turn back, then are they only in a schism, and God will suffice thee against them, for He both hears and knows
If therefore they believe even as ye believe, then have they true guidance; but if they turn back, then do they cut themselves off from you: and God will suffice to protect thee against them, for He is the Hearer, the Knower
Now if they believe according to what ye believe, they are surely directed, but if they turn back, they are in schism. God shall support thee against them, for he is the hearer, the wise

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.
CLEARED. Licence read verbatim from the block embedded in this very file. Ingested exactly as shipped: no normalisation, no stripping of marks, no Unicode recomposition.

He prescribed for you the same religion He enjoined upon Noah, and what We inspired to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: "You shall uphold the religion, and be not divided therein." As for the idolaters, what you call them to is outrageous to them. God chooses to Himself whom He wills, and He guides to Himself whoever repents.
He hath ordained for you that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire in thee (Muhammad), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying: Establish the religion, and be not divided therein. Dreadful for the idolaters is that unto which thou callest them. Allah chooseth for Himself whom He will, and guideth unto Himself him who turneth (toward Him)
He has enjoined upon you for religion what He prescribed to Noah and what we inspired thee with, and what we inspired Abraham and Moses and Jesus,- to be steadfast in religion, and not to part into sects therein - a great thing to the idolaters is that which ye call them to! God elects for Himself whom He pleases and guides unto Himself him who turns repentant
To you hath He prescribed the faith which He commanded unto Noah, and which we have revealed to thee, and which we commanded unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying, "Observe this faith, and be not divided into sects therein." Intolerable to those who worship idols jointly with God Is that faith to which thou dost call them. Whom He pleaseth will God choose for it, and whosoever shall turn to Him in penitence will He guide to it
He hath ordained you the religion which He commanded Noah, and which We have revealed unto thee, O Mohammed, and which We commanded Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: Saying, observe this religion, and be not divided therein. The worship of one God, to which thou invitest them, is grievous unto the unbelievers: God will elect thereto whom He pleaseth, and will direct unto the same him who shall repent

They became divided only after knowledge came to them, out of resentment among themselves. Were it not for a predetermined decision from your Lord, judgment would have been pronounced between them. Indeed, those who were made to inherit the Book after them are in grave doubt about it.
And they were not divided until after the knowledge came unto them, through rivalry among themselves; and had it not been for a Word that had already gone forth from thy Lord for an appointed term, it surely had been judged between them. And those who were made to inherit the Scripture after them are verily in hopeless doubt concerning it
But they did not part into sects until after the knowledge had come to them, through mutual envy; and had it not been for thy Lord's word already passed for an appointed time, it would surely have been decided between them; but, verily, those who have been given the Book as an inheritance after them, are in hesitating doubt concerning it
Nor were they divided into sects through mutual jealousy, till after that "the knowledge" had come to them: and had not a decree from thy Lord gone forth respiting them to a fixed time, verily, there had at once been a decision between them. And they who have inherited "the Book" after them, are in perplexity of doubt concerning it
Those who lived in times past were not divided among themselves, until after that the knowledge of God's unity had come unto them; through their own perverseness: And unless a previous decree had passed from thy Lord, to bear with them till a determined time, verily the matter had been decided between them, by the destruction of the gain-sayers. They who have inherited the scriptures after them, are certainly in a perplexing doubt concerning the same
42:15 — the verse above

As for those who dispute about God after having answered His call, their argument is invalid with their Lord; and upon them falls wrath; and a grievous torment awaits them.
And those who argue concerning Allah after He hath been acknowledged, their argument hath no weight with their Lord, and wrath is upon them and theirs will be an awful doom
But those who argue about God after it has been assented to, their arguments shall be rebutted before their Lord; and upon them shall be wrath, and for them shall be keen torment
And as to those who dispute about God, after pledges of obedience given to Him, their disputings shall be condemned by their Lord, and wrath shall be on them, and theirs shall be a sore torment
As to those who dispute concerning God, after obedience hath been paid Him by receiving his religion, their disputing shall be vain in the sight of their Lord; and wrath shall fall on them, and they shall suffer a grievous punishment

It is God who revealed the Book with the truth, and the Balance. And what will make you realize that perhaps the Hour is near?
Allah it is Who hath revealed the Scripture with truth, and the Balance. How canst thou know? It may be that the Hour is nigh
God it is who has sent down the Book with truth, and the balance; and what shall make thee know whether haply the Hour be nigh
It is God who hath sent down the Book with truth, and the Balance: but who shall inform thee whether haply "the Hour" be nigh
It is God who hath sent down the scripture with truth; and the balance of true judgment: And what shall inform thee whether the hour be nigh at hand
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The anchors are the verses where the five renderings speak to the People of the Book, or People of the Scripture, about God as both theirs and ours. The probe 'our God and your God' (with 'our Allah and your Allah' for Pickthall) returns one verse, 29:46, in all five renderings. The probe 'our Lord and your Lord' (with 'your Lord and our Lord') returns 8 rows at two verses, 2:139 and 42:15. 3:64 is added because it sets out the common terms that the same address proposes, and what follows if they are refused. This study reports what the text says to its hearers. It does not compare the text with what Jewish or Christian writings say about God; that comparison is history and theology, and it lies outside these verses.
