Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice, and debate with them in the most dignified manner. Your Lord is aware of those who stray from His path, and He is aware of those who are guided.
What does the Qur'an say about disputing with others 'in the best way'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 16:125 CALL UNTO THE WAY OF THY LORD WITH WISDOM AND FAIR EXHORTATION, AND REASON WITH THEM IN THE BETTER WAY. Lo, thy Lord is best aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is best aware of those who go aright. In because it is the fullest instruction - three modes named - and because the closing clause removes the outcome from the arguer's hands.
- 02 29:46 And argue not with the People of the Scripture UNLESS IT BE IN A WAY THAT IS BETTER, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: we believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you. In because it applies the rule to a named group and supplies the opening line. ALSO CARRIED by What common ground does the Qur'an offer the People of the Book?, with a different reason there.
- 03 41:34 The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. REPEL THE EVIL DEED WITH ONE WHICH IS BETTER, then lo, he between whom and thee there was enmity will become as though he were a bosom friend. In because it is the same comparative applied to conduct rather than speech, and it states an outcome. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from the study What does the Qur'an say about repelling evil with good?
- 04 25:63 The slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and WHEN THE FOOLISH ONES ADDRESS THEM, ANSWER: PEACE. In because it gives the reply for the case where the exchange is not worth having. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about humility versus arrogance?, with a different reason there.
- 05 6:108 REVILE NOT THOSE UNTO WHOM THEY PRAY BESIDE GOD, lest they wrongfully revile God through ignorance. In because it forbids a specific tactic and gives a consequential reason. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about idolaters (mushrikun)? and the study What does the Qur'an say about justice toward non-Muslims?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four verses, and 16:125 gives the whole method in one line.
CALL UNTO THE WAY OF THY LORD WITH WISDOM AND FAIR EXHORTATION, AND REASON WITH THEM IN THE BETTER WAY. Three modes: wisdom, good counsel, and argument conducted in the better manner. The comparative - BETTER, kindlier, more excellent - is the operative word and it recurs.
Then the clause that changes the temperature: THY LORD IS BEST AWARE OF HIM WHO STRAYETH FROM HIS WAY. The arguer is not told to win. The assessment of who is astray is explicitly assigned elsewhere.
29:46 applies the rule to the People of the Scripture, and supplies the opening line: WE BELIEVE IN WHAT WAS REVEALED TO US AND REVEALED TO YOU. It also carries an exception - save with such of them as do wrong - which the text does not define, and this study will not define it either.
6:108 forbids one specific tactic and its reason is practical rather than principled: DO NOT REVILE what they pray to, LEST THEY REVILE GOD IN RETURN THROUGH IGNORANCE. Insult is ruled out because of what it provokes.
25:63 gives the exit for a conversation not worth having: when the foolish address them, THEY ANSWER PEACE. Not a rebuttal, not silence - a word.
And 41:34 extends the same comparative from speech to conduct, with the strongest promised outcome in this area: the enemy becomes as a close friend.
The studies What does the Qur'an say about disputing without knowledge? and What does the Qur'an say about following forefathers blindly? carry the faults this method is set against.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 16:125, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

So be patient. Your patience is solely from God. And do not grieve over them, and do not be stressed by their schemes.
Endure thou patiently (O Muhammad). Thine endurance is only by (the help of) Allah. Grieve not for them, and be not in distress because of that which they devise
Be thou patient then; but thy patience is only in God's hands. Do not grieve about them; and be not in a strait at their craftiness
Endure then with patience. But thy patient endurance must be sought in none but God. And be not grieved about the infidels, and be not troubled at their devices

You did not read any scripture before this, nor did you write it down with your right hand; otherwise the falsifiers would have doubted.
And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood
Thou couldst not recite before this any book, nor write it with thy right hand, for in that case those who deem it vain would have doubted
Thou didst not recite any book (of revelation) before it: with that right hand of thine thou didst not transcribe one: else might they who treat it as a vain thing have justly doubted
Thou couldest not read any book before this; neither couldest thou write it with thy right hand: Then had the gainsayers justly doubted of the divine original thereof

Do not abuse those who call on other than God, for then they may abuse God openly in their ignorance. So do we make seemly to every nation their work, then unto their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they have done
Revile not those whom they call on beside God, lest they, in their ignorance, despitefully revile Him. Thus have we planned out their actions for every people; then shall they return to their Lord, and He will declare to them what those actions have been

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 16:125, 29:46, 41:34, 25:63, 6:108, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - dispute + with + them + in + the + better + way; argue + with + them + in + the + kindlier + manner; call + unto + the + way + of + thy + lord + with + wisdom; fair + exhortation; reason + with + them + in + the + better + way. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
