So when it has reached the throat.
What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 56:83–87 Why, then, when the soul cometh up to the THROAT of the dying, and ye are at that moment looking - and We are nearer to him than ye are, but ye see not - why, if ye are not to be judged, do ye not restore it, if ye are truthful? In as ONE PASSAGE because it is a single argument built on the deathbed scene, and because its force is entirely in the challenge at the end.
- 02 75:26–30 Nay, but when the life cometh up to the throat, and men say: who is a wizard to restore him? - and he knoweth that it is the parting, and agony is heaped on agony - unto thy Lord that day will be the driving. In as ONE PASSAGE for the same reason: the throat, the bystanders, the knowledge that it is the end, and the destination are one movement.
- 03 6:61–62 He sendeth guardians over you until, when death cometh unto one of you, Our messengers receive him, and they neglect not; then they are returned unto God, their Lord, the Just. In as ONE PASSAGE because it names who takes the soul and adds that they do not fail in it.
- 04 39:42 God receiveth souls at the time of their death, AND THAT WHICH DIETH NOT YET IN ITS SLEEP; He keepeth that for which He hath ordained death and dismisseth the rest till an appointed term. In because it puts sleep and death in one category and is the most unusual statement in the set.
- 05 4:18 The forgiveness is not for those who do ill-deeds until, when death attendeth upon one of them, he saith: lo, I repent now. In because it is the one verse that says what a repentance offered AT that moment is worth. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about a good end (husn al-khatima)?, with a different reason there.
- 06 23:99–100 Until, when death cometh unto one of them, he saith: My Lord, SEND ME BACK, that I may do right in what I have left behind - but nay, it is only a word he speaketh, and behind them is a barrier until the day they are raised. In as ONE PASSAGE because the request and its refusal are one sentence, and because the barrier at the end is where barzakh begins. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the state between death and resurrection (barzakh)?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six passages, and two of them describe the same physical moment in almost the same words.
56:83 and 75:26 both put the soul AT THE THROAT. Both then turn to the people standing around - ye are at that moment looking; men say, who is a wizard to restore him? - and both use the bystanders' helplessness as the point. 56:87 makes it an explicit challenge: if you are not to be judged, then BRING IT BACK. The text is not describing a process. It is using a deathbed to argue that something is happening which the people in the room cannot touch.
56:85 adds the line that gives this study its strangeness: WE ARE NEARER TO HIM THAN YE ARE, BUT YE SEE NOT. The same nearness language as 50:16, carried by What does 'closer than the jugular vein' mean in the Qur'an?
6:61-62 names an agency - messengers who receive the soul and DO NOT NEGLECT - and 39:42 makes the claim a reader is least likely to expect: God takes souls at death AND takes the soul that has not yet died, in sleep; He keeps the one whose death is decreed and sends the other back until its term. Sleep and death are put in one category, and the difference between them is which soul is returned.
Two verses close doors. 4:18 says a repentance produced at that moment does not count. 23:99-100 records the request - send me back - and answers it in the same breath: it is only a word he speaks.
What the text does not give is any of the detail readers expect: no description of the angel by name, no account of the soul's ascent, no questioning. That material is , and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 56:83–87, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

6:62 Sonra gerçek mevlâları olan Allah’a döndürülürler. Dikkat edin, hüküm O’na aittir. O, hesap görenlerin en hızlısıdır.

The forgiveness is not for those who do ill-deeds until, when death attendeth upon one of them, he saith: Lo! I repent now; nor yet for those who die while they are disbelievers. For such We have prepared a painful doom
His turning again is not for those who do evil, until, when death comes before one of them, he says, 'Now I turn again;' nor yet forth those who die in misbelief. For such as these have we prepared a grievous woe
But no place of repentance shall there be for those who do evil, until, when death is close to one of them, he saith, "Now verily am I turned to God;" nor to those who die unbelievers. These! we have made ready for them a grievous torment
But no repentance shall be accepted from those who do evil until the time when death presenteth it self unto one of them, and he saith, verily I repent now; nor unto those who die unbelievers: For them have we prepared a grievous punishment

No!
23:99 hanga tokkoon isaaniitti duuti dhufe (yeroo san) ni jedha: “Gooftaa kiyya! Na deebisaa
23:100 Ani waaniin dhiise keessatti gaarii hojjachuun kajeela.” Lakkii! Isheen jecha inni ishee jedhu (qofa), isaan duuba hagoogiitu jira Hanga guyyaa kaafamaatti.
23:99 Mpaka yanapomfikia mmoja wao mauti, husema: "Mola wangu Mlezi! Nirudishe.
23:100 Ili nitende mema sasa badala ya yale niliyoyaacha." Wapi! Hii ni kauli aisemayo yeye tu. Na nyuma yao kipo kizuizi mpaka siku watakapofufuliwa.

When the Horn is blown, no relations between them will exist on that Day, and they will not ask after one another.
And when the trumpet is blown there will be no kinship among them that day, nor will they ask of one another
And when, the trumpet shall be blown, and there shall be no relation between them on that day, nor shall they beg of each other then
And when the trumpet shall be sounded, the ties of kindred between them shall cease on that day; neither shall they ask each other's help
When therefore the trumpet shall be sounded, there shall be no relation between them which shall be regarded on that day; neither shall they ask assistance of each other

Those whose scales are heavy-those are the successful.
Then those whose scales are heavy, they are the successful
And he whose scales are heavy,- they are the prosperous
They whose balances shall be heavy, shall be the blest
They whose balances shall be heavy with good works shall be happy
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 56:83-87, 75:26-30, 6:61-62, 39:42, 4:18, 23:99-100, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - reaches + throat; soul + throat; angels + stretch + hands; takes + souls; death + comes + one. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:106 - the law of wills; 6:60 - the sleep analogy without the death clause - 39:42 carries it better; 6:93 - on-topic and vivid, but the verse's subject is the punishment of those who forge lies against God. 33:19 - a simile about cowardice in battle.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
