Repentance is available from God for those who commit evil out of ignorance, and then repent soon after. These-God will relent towards them. God is Knowing and Wise.
What does the Qur'an say about repenting at the point of death?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:17–18 Forgiveness is only incumbent on God toward those who do evil in ignorance and then turn quickly in repentance. THE FORGIVENESS IS NOT FOR THOSE WHO DO ILL-DEEDS UNTIL, WHEN DEATH ATTENDETH UPON ONE OF THEM, HE SAITH: LO, I REPENT NOW; NOR YET FOR THOSE WHO DIE WHILE THEY ARE DISBELIEVERS. In as ONE PASSAGE because 4:17 sets the terms and 4:18 names the two cases that fall outside them.
- 02 10:90–91 And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh with his hosts pursued them in rebellion and transgression, till, when the fate of drowning overtook him, he exclaimed: I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS NO GOD SAVE HIM IN WHOM THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL BELIEVE, and I am of those who surrender. WHAT! NOW! WHEN HITHERTO THOU HAST REBELLED AND BEEN OF THE WRONG-DOERS. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the worked example: the confession is doctrinally perfect and it is refused on grounds of timing alone. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about tyranny - Pharaoh as the archetype?, with a different reason there.
- 03 40:84–85 Then, WHEN THEY SAW OUR DOOM, THEY SAID: WE BELIEVE IN GOD ONLY... BUT THEIR FAITH COULD NOT AVAIL THEM WHEN THEY SAW OUR DOOM. THIS IS GOD'S LAW WHICH HATH EVER TAKEN COURSE FOR HIS BONDMEN. In as ONE PASSAGE because 40:85 calls the refusal a LAW - a standing rule rather than a decision about one case.
- 04 23:99–100 Until, when death cometh unto one of them, he saith: MY LORD, SEND ME BACK, THAT I MAY DO RIGHT IN THAT WHICH I HAVE LEFT BEHIND. But nay, IT IS BUT A WORD THAT HE SPEAKETH; and behind them is a barrier until the day when they are raised. In as ONE PASSAGE because the request and its dismissal are one sentence. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give? and What does the Qur'an say about the state between death and resurrection (barzakh)?, with different reasons there.
- 05 6:158 On the day when some of thy Lord's portents come, ITS BELIEF AVAILETH NAUGHT A SOUL WHICH THEREFORE BELIEVED NOT ABEFORE, nor earned good by its faith. In because it extends the same rule from the individual deathbed to the day the signs arrive.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an closes this door, states the closing as a general law, and gives a worked example.
4:18 is the rule: THE FORGIVENESS IS NOT FOR THOSE WHO DO ILL-DEEDS UNTIL, WHEN DEATH ATTENDETH UPON ONE OF THEM, HE SAITH: LO, I REPENT NOW. The clause depends on the word UNTIL - the fault is not the repentance but the postponement of it to the last available second.
10:90-91 is the example, and it is unsparing precisely because the words are right. Pharaoh, drowning, says: I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS NO GOD SAVE HIM IN WHOM THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL BELIEVE, AND I AM OF THOSE WHO SURRENDER. As a confession of faith there is nothing wrong with it. The answer is about timing alone: WHAT! NOW! WHEN HITHERTO THOU HAST REBELLED.
40:85 generalises it and does something the other verses do not - it calls the refusal a LAW: their faith could not avail them when they saw the doom; THIS IS GOD'S LAW WHICH HATH EVER TAKEN COURSE FOR HIS BONDMEN. A standing rule, not a judgment about particular people.
6:158 extends the same rule beyond individual death to the day the great signs appear: belief then avails nothing to a soul that did not believe before.
And 23:99-100 records the other thing said at that moment - MY LORD, SEND ME BACK - and dismisses it in five words: IT IS BUT A WORD THAT HE SPEAKETH.
Read with 4:17, the reason emerges. Forgiveness is described as incumbent toward those who do wrong IN IGNORANCE AND TURN QUICKLY. A deathbed turn is neither ignorant nor quick. The study What does the Qur'an say about a good end (husn al-khatima)? draws the practical conclusion.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:17–18, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Forgiveness is only incumbent on Allah toward those who do evil in ignorance (and) then turn quickly (in repentance) to Allah. These are they toward whom Allah relenteth. Allah is ever Knower, Wise
God is only bound to turn again towards those who do evil through ignorance and then turn again. Surely, these will God turn again to, for God is knowing, wise
With God himself will the repentance of those who have done evil ignorantly, and then turn speedily unto Him, be accepted. These! God will turn unto them: for God is Knowing, Wise
Verily repentance will be accepted with God, from those who do evil ignorantly, and then repent speedily; unto them will God be turned: For God is knowing and wise

O you who believe! It is not permitted for you to inherit women against their will. And do not coerce them in order to take away some of what you had given them, unless they commit a proven adultery. And live with them in kindness. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which God has placed much good.
O ye who believe! It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the women (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness. But consort with them in kindness, for if ye hate them it may happen that ye hate a thing wherein Allah hath placed much good
O ye who believe! it is not lawful for you to inherit women's estates against their will; nor to hinder them, that ye may go off with part of what ye brought them, unless they commit fornication manifestly; but associate with them in reason, for if ye are averse from them, it may be that ye are averse from something wherein God has put much good for you
O believers! it is not allowed you to be heirs of your wives against their will; nor to hinder them from marrying, in order to take from them part of the dowry you had given them, unless they have been guilty of undoubted lewdness; but associate kindly with them: for if ye are estranged from them, haply ye are estranged from that in which God hath placed abundant good
O true believers, it is not lawful for you to be heirs of women against their will, nor to hinder them from marrying others, that ye may take away part of what ye have given them in dowry; unless they have been guilty of a manifest crime: But converse kindly with them. And if ye hate them, it may happen that ye may hate a thing wherein God hath placed much good

And if ye wish to exchange one wife for another and ye have given unto one of them a sum of money (however great), take nothing from it. Would ye take it by the way of calumny and open wrong
But if ye wish to exchange one wife for another, and have given one of them a talent, then take not from it anything. What! would you take it for a calumny and a manifest crime
And if ye be desirous to exchange one wife for another, and have given one of them a talent, make no deduction from it. Would ye take it by slandering her, and with manifest wrong

And We settled the Children of Israel in a position of honor, and provided them with good things. They did not differ until knowledge came to them. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding their differences.
And We verily did allot unto the Children of Israel a fixed abode, and did provide them with good things; and they differed not until the knowledge came unto them. Lo! thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ
And we established the people of Israel with a sure establishment, and we provided them with good things; nor did they disagree until there came to them the knowledge. Verily, thy Lord shall decide between them on the resurrection day concerning that whereon they did dispute
Moreover we prepared a settled abode for the children of Israel, and provided them with good things: nor did they fall into variance till the knowledge (the Law) came to them: Truly thy Lord will decide between them on the day of Resurrection concerning that in which they differed
And We prepared for the children of Israel an established dwelling in the land of Canaan, and We provided good things for their sustenance: And they differed not in point of religion, until knowledge had come unto them; verily thy Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection, concerning that wherein they disagreed

But their faith could not avail them when they saw Our doom. This is Allah's law which hath ever taken course for His bondmen. And then the disbelievers will be ruined
But their faith was of no avail to them when they saw our violence - the course of God with His servants in time past, and there the misbelievers lose
But their faith, after they had witnessed our vengeance, profited them not. Such the procedure of God with regard to his servants who flourished of old. And then the unbelievers perished

No!
23:99 hanga tokkoon isaaniitti duuti dhufe (yeroo san) ni jedha: “Gooftaa kiyya! Na deebisaa
23:100 Ani waaniin dhiise keessatti gaarii hojjachuun kajeela.” Lakkii! Isheen jecha inni ishee jedhu (qofa), isaan duuba hagoogiitu jira Hanga guyyaa kaafamaatti.
23:99 Mpaka yanapomfikia mmoja wao mauti, husema: "Mola wangu Mlezi! Nirudishe.
23:100 Ili nitende mema sasa badala ya yale niliyoyaacha." Wapi! Hii ni kauli aisemayo yeye tu. Na nyuma yao kipo kizuizi mpaka siku watakapofufuliwa.

Are they waiting for anything but for the angels to come to them, or for your Lord to arrive, or for some of your Lord's signs to come? On the Day when some of your Lord's signs come, no soul will benefit from its faith unless it had believed previously, or had earned goodness through its faith. Say, "Wait, we too are waiting."
Compare translations (4)
Wait they, indeed, for nothing less than that the angels should come unto them, or thy Lord should come, or there should come one of the portents from thy Lord? In the day when one of the portents from thy Lord cometh, its belief availeth naught a soul which theretofore believed not, nor in its belief earned good (by works). Say: Wait ye! Lo! We (too) are waiting
What do they expect but that the angels should come for them, or that thy Lord should come, or that some signs of thy Lord should come? On the day when some signs do come, its faith shall profit no soul which did not believe before, unless it has earned some good by its faith. Say, 'Wait ye expectant, then we wait expectant too
What wait they for, but the coming of the angels to them, or the coming of thy Lord Himself, or that some of the sings of the Lord should come to pass? On the day when some of thy Lord's signs shall come to pass, its faith shall not profit a soul which believed not before, nor wrought good works in virtue of its faith. SAY: Wait ye. Verily, we will wait also
Do they wait for any other than that the angels should come unto them, to part their souls from their bodies; or that thy Lord should come to punish them; or that some of the signs of thy Lord should come to pass, shewing the day of judgement to be at hand? On the day whereon some of thy Lord's signs shall come to pass, its faith shall not profit a soul which believed not before, or wrought not good in its faith. Say, wait ye for this day; we surely do wait for it

The translators word this verse differently
Whoever comes up with a good deed will have ten times its like; and whoever comes up with an evil deed will be repaid only with its equivalent-they will not be wronged.
Whoso bringeth a good deed will receive tenfold the like thereof, while whoso bringeth an ill-deed will be awarded but the like thereof; and they will not be wronged
He who brings a good work shall have ten like it; but he who brings a bad work shall be recompensed only with the like thereof, for they shall not be wronged
He who shall present himself with good works shall receive a tenfold reward; but he who shall present himself with evil works shall receive none other than a like punishment: and they shall not be treated unjustly
He who shall appear with good works, shall receive a tenfold recompense for the same; but he who shall appear with evil works, shall receive only an equal punishment for the same; and they shall not be treated unjustly
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:17-18, 10:90-91, 40:84-85, 23:99-100, 6:158, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - until + when + death + attendeth + upon + one + of + them + he + saith + lo + i + repent + now; nor + yet + for + those + who + die + while + they + are + disbelievers; i + believe + that + there + is + no + god + save + him + what + now; when + they + saw + our + doom + their + faith + could + not + avail. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
