I swear by the Day of Resurrection.
What does Surah al-Qiyaama say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 75:1 Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection. This is here because it opens the surah by naming the day of resurrection, and the renderings divide over whether an oath is sworn by it: "I swear by the day of resurrection" in Sale and "I swear by the Day of Resurrection" in Pickthall and Itani, where Rodwell has "It needeth not that I swear" and Palmer "I need not swear". This study does not choose between them. Also carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen? and What is the 'soul that blames itself' in the Qur'an?, with different reasons there.
- 02 75:2 Nay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true). This is here because it names the soul that blames itself, "the soul which accuseth itself" in Sale, "the self-accusing soul" in Rodwell and Palmer, "the accusing soul" in Pickthall and "the blaming soul" in Itani, and the renderings divide over whether an oath is sworn by it: "and I swear" in Sale, "Nay, I swear" in Pickthall and "And I swear" in Itani, where Rodwell has "Or that I swear" and Palmer "Nor need I swear". This study does not choose between them. Pickthall's bracket "(that this Scripture is true)" is his own. Also carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen? and What is the 'soul that blames itself' in the Qur'an?, with different reasons there.
- 03 75:3 Thinketh man that We shall not assemble his bones. This is here because it asks whether man thinks his bones will not be gathered: "gather his bones together" in Sale, "re-unite his bones" in Rodwell, "collect his bones" in Palmer, "assemble his bones" in Pickthall and "reassemble his bones" in Itani. Also carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the resurrection of the body? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
- 04 75:4 Yea, verily. We are Able to restore his very fingers. This is here because it answers that God is able to restore even "the smallest bones of his fingers" in Sale, "his very finger tips" in Rodwell, "his finger tips" in Palmer, "his very fingers" in Pickthall and "his fingertips" in Itani. Also carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the resurrection of the body? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
- 05 75:5 But man would fain deny what is before him. This is here because it says what man wants instead, and the renderings differ: "man chooseth to be wicked" in Sale and "man wishes to be wicked" in Palmer, where Rodwell has "man chooseth to deny what is before him", Pickthall "man would fain deny what is before him" and Itani "man wants to deny what is ahead of him". Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 06 75:6 He asketh: When will be this Day of Resurrection. This is here because it gives his question about the time of the day of resurrection: "when will the day of resurrection be" in Sale, "When this day of Resurrection" in Rodwell, "When is the resurrection day" in Palmer, "When will be this Day of Resurrection" in Pickthall and "When is the Day of Resurrection" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 07 75:7 But when sight is confounded. This is here because it begins the answer with sight on that day: "the sight shall be dazzled" in Sale, "the eye shall be dazzled" in Rodwell, "the sight shall be dazed" in Palmer, "sight is confounded" in Pickthall and "vision is dazzled" in Itani.
- 08 75:8 And the moon is eclipsed. This is here because it adds the moon: "eclipsed" in Sale, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani and "darkened" in Rodwell.
- 09 75:9 And sun and moon are united. This is here because it adds the sun and the moon brought together: "in conjunction" in Sale, "together" in Rodwell and Palmer, "united" in Pickthall and "joined together" in Itani.
- 10 75:10 On that day man will cry: Whither to flee. This is here because it gives what man says on that day: "where is a place of refuge" in Sale, "Where is there a place to flee to" in Rodwell, "Whither to flee" in Pickthall and "Where is the escape" in Itani.
- 11 75:11 Alas! No refuge. This is here because it answers that there is none: "There shall be no place to fly unto" in Sale, "there is no refuge" in Rodwell and Itani and "no refuge" in Palmer and Pickthall.
- 12 75:12 Unto thy Lord is the recourse that day. This is here because it says where all comes to rest that day, with the Lord: "the sure mansion of rest" in Sale, "the sole asylum" in Rodwell, "the sure settlement" in Palmer, "the recourse" in Pickthall and "the settlement" in Itani.
- 13 75:13 On that day man is told the tale of that which he hath sent before and left behind. This is here because it says man will be told on that day of what he did: "first and last" in Sale and Rodwell, "what He has sent forward or delayed" in Palmer, "that which he hath sent before and left behind" in Pickthall and "everything he put forward, and everything he left behind" in Itani.
- 14 75:14 Oh, but man is a telling witness against himself. This is here because it says man testifies against himself: "an evidence against himself" in Sale and Palmer, "the eye witness against himself" in Rodwell, "a telling witness against himself" in Pickthall and "evidence against himself" in Itani.
- 15 75:15 Although he tender his excuses. This is here because it says this holds though he offer excuses: "though he offer his excuses" in Sale, "even if he put forth his plea" in Rodwell, "even if he thrusts forward his excuses" in Palmer, "Although he tender his excuses" in Pickthall and "Even as he presents his excuses" in Itani. Sale alone adds "they shall not be received".
- 16 75:16 Stir not thy tongue herewith to hasten it. This is here because it turns to the addressee, not to move the tongue to hasten the recitation: "Move not thy tongue" in Sale and Rodwell, "Do not move thy tongue" in Palmer, "Stir not thy tongue" in Pickthall and "Do not wag your tongue" in Itani. Sale alone names the addressee, "O Mohammed", and Sale alone names the bearer of the revelations, "Gabriel". Also carried by the studies Why was the Qur'an revealed gradually, by its own account? and What does the Qur'an say about its own preservation?, with different reasons there.
- 17 75:17 Lo! upon Us (resteth) the putting together thereof and the reading thereof. This is here because it says the gathering and the reading of it rest with God: "the collecting the Koran in thy mind, and the teaching thee the true reading thereof" in Sale, "the collecting and the recital of it" in Rodwell, "to collect it and to read it" in Palmer, "the putting together thereof and the reading thereof" in Pickthall and "its collection and its recitation" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(resteth)" is his own. Also carried by the studies Why was the Qur'an revealed gradually, by its own account? and What does the Qur'an say about its own preservation?, with different reasons there.
- 18 75:18 And when We read it, follow thou the reading. This is here because it tells the addressee, when it has been read, to follow the reading: "follow the reading thereof" in Sale, "follow thou the recital" in Rodwell, "follow its reading" in Palmer, "follow thou the reading" in Pickthall and "follow its recitation" in Itani. Sale alone adds "by the tongue of the angel". Also carried by the studies Why was the Qur'an revealed gradually, by its own account? and What does the Qur'an say about its own preservation?, with different reasons there.
- 19 75:19 Then lo! upon Us (resteth) the explanation thereof. This is here because it says the explanation of it also rests with God: "our part to explain it unto thee" in Sale, "ours to make it clear to thee" in Rodwell, "for us to explain it" in Palmer, "the explanation thereof" in Pickthall and "its explanation" in Itani. Also carried by the studies Why was the Qur'an revealed gradually, by its own account? and What does the Qur'an say about its own preservation?, with different reasons there.
- 20 75:20 Nay, but ye do love the fleeting Now. This is here because it turns to the hearers: they love what passes, "that which hasteneth away" in Sale, "the transitory" in Rodwell, "the transient life" in Palmer, "the fleeting Now" in Pickthall and "the fleeting life" in Itani. Sale alone opens the verse with "By no means shalt thou be thus hasty for the future".
- 21 75:21 And neglect the Hereafter. This is here because it says they neglect what comes after: "the life to come" in Sale and Rodwell and "the hereafter" in Palmer, Pickthall and Itani.
- 22 75:22 That day will faces be resplendent. This is here because it says some faces shine that day: "bright" in Sale and Palmer, "beam with light" in Rodwell, "resplendent" in Pickthall and "radiant" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about seeing God in paradise?, with a different reason there.
- 23 75:23 Looking toward their Lord. This is here because it says they look toward their Lord: "looking towards their Lord" in Sale and Itani, "Outlooking towards their Lord" in Rodwell, "gazing on their Lord" in Palmer and "Looking toward their Lord" in Pickthall. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about seeing God in paradise?, with a different reason there.
- 24 75:24 And that day will other faces be despondent. This is here because it sets other faces against them: "dismal" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, "despondent" in Pickthall and "gloomy" in Itani.
- 25 75:25 Thou wilt know that some great disaster is about to fall on them. This is here because it says what those faces expect, and who perceives it differs: "They shall think" in Sale and "As if they thought" in Rodwell, where Palmer has "Thou wilt think", Pickthall "Thou wilt know" and Itani "Realizing". What falls on them is "a crushing calamity" in Sale, "some great calamity" in Rodwell, "a back-breaking calamity" in Palmer, "some great disaster" in Pickthall and "a back-breaker" in Itani.
- 26 75:26 Nay, but when the life cometh up to the throat. This is here because it describes the dying: "When a man's soul shall come up to his throat" in Sale, "when the soul shall come up into the throat" in Rodwell, "comes up into the throat" in Palmer, "when the life cometh up to the throat" in Pickthall and "when it has reached the breast-bones" in Itani. Sale alone adds "in his last agony". Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 27 75:27 And men say: Where is the wizard (who can save him now). This is here because it gives what is said then: "who bringeth a charm to recover him" in Sale, "Who hath a charm that can restore him" in Rodwell, "Where is the wizard" in Pickthall and "Who is the healer" in Itani. Sale alone names who say it, "the standers-by", and Pickthall's bracket "(who can save him now)" is his own. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 28 75:28 And he knoweth that it is the parting. This is here because it says the dying man takes it for the parting: "his departure out of this world" in Sale, "the time of his departure is come" in Rodwell, "his parting" in Palmer and "the parting" in Pickthall and Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 29 75:29 And agony is heaped on agony. This is here because it describes the dying further, and the renderings differ: "one leg shall be joined with the other leg" in Sale, "one leg shall be laid over the other" in Rodwell, "leg shall be pressed on leg" in Palmer and "leg is entwined with leg" in Itani, where Pickthall has "agony is heaped on agony". This study does not choose between them. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 30 75:30 Unto thy Lord that day will be the driving. This is here because it says he is driven to the Lord on that day: "shall he be driven" in Sale, "shall he be driven on" in Rodwell, "shall the driving be" in Palmer, "will be the driving" in Pickthall and "is the drive" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?, with a different reason there.
- 31 75:31 For he neither trusted, nor prayed. This is here because it says of him that he did not believe or pray: "he believed not, neither did he pray" in Sale, "he believed not, and he did not pray" in Rodwell, "he neither trusted, nor prayed" in Pickthall and "He neither believed nor prayed" in Itani.
- 32 75:32 But he denied and flouted. This is here because it says he denied and turned his back: "accused God's apostle of imposture" in Sale, "called the truth a lie" in Rodwell, "said it was a lie" in Palmer, "denied and flouted" in Pickthall and "denied and turned away" in Itani. Sale alone names whom he denied, "God's apostle".
- 33 75:33 Then went he to his folk with glee. This is here because it says he went to his people in pride: "walking with a haughty mien" in Sale, "haughtily" in Palmer, "with glee" in Pickthall and "full of pride" in Itani; whom he went to is "his family" in Sale and Itani, "his people" in Rodwell and Palmer and "his folk" in Pickthall.
- 34 75:34 Nearer unto thee and nearer. This is here because it turns on him, and the renderings divide: "woe be unto thee" in Sale, "woe to thee" in Palmer and "Woe to you" in Itani, where Rodwell has "That Hour is nearer to thee and nearer" and Pickthall "Nearer unto thee and nearer". This study does not choose between them.
- 35 75:35 Again nearer unto thee and nearer (is the doom). This is here because it repeats it: "again, woe be unto thee" in Sale, "again woe to thee" in Palmer and "Woe to you" in Itani, where Rodwell has "It is ever nearer to thee and nearer still" and Pickthall "Again nearer unto thee and nearer". Pickthall's bracket "(is the doom)" is his own.
- 36 75:36 Thinketh man that he is to be left aimless. This is here because it asks whether man thinks he will be left "at full liberty, without control" in Sale, "supreme" in Rodwell, "to himself" in Palmer, "aimless" in Pickthall and "without purpose" in Itani.
- 37 75:37 Was he not a drop of fluid which gushed forth. This is here because it asks whether he was not "a drop of seed, which was emitted" in Sale, "a mere embryo" in Rodwell, "a clot of emitted seed" in Palmer, "a drop of fluid which gushed forth" in Pickthall and "a drop of ejaculated semen" in Itani.
- 38 75:38 Then he became a clot; then (Allah) shaped and fashioned. This is here because it says he then became "a little coagulated blood" in Sale, "thick blood" in Rodwell, "congealed blood" in Palmer and "a clot" in Pickthall and Itani, and was shaped and fashioned. The bracket in Palmer's "(God) created him" is his own, and so is the bracket in Pickthall's "(Allah) shaped". Also carried by the studies Did the Qur'an predict modern science - and does any verse say it is making a prediction? and What does the Qur'an say about the stages of human creation in the womb?, with different reasons there.
- 39 75:39 And made of him a pair, the male and female. This is here because it says He made of him the sexes, male and female: "two sexes" in Sale, "twain" in Rodwell, "pairs" in Palmer, "a pair" in Pickthall and "the two sexes" in Itani.
- 40 75:40 Is not He (Who doeth so) Able to bring the dead to life. This is here because it closes the surah by asking whether the maker of all this has not the power to give the dead life: "able to quicken the dead" in Sale and Palmer, "powerful enough to quicken the dead" in Rodwell, "Able to bring the dead to life" in Pickthall and "Able to revive the dead" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(Who doeth so)" is his own.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Qiyaama runs from 75:1 to 75:40. It opens by naming the day of resurrection and the soul that blames itself, and the renderings divide over whether an oath is sworn by them. It answers the doubt of man that his bones will be gathered. It tells of the day when sight is dazzled and the sun and moon are brought together and man asks where to flee, and turns aside to tell the addressee not to hurry the recitation. It sets shining faces looking toward their Lord against gloomy ones, describes the hour of death, and closes by asking how man thinks he will be left, when he was made from a drop and shaped.
75:1-30, a section in Tanzil's division of the text. At 75:1-2 the renderings divide over whether an oath is sworn: "I swear by the day of resurrection" in Sale and "I swear by the Day of Resurrection" in Pickthall and Itani, where Rodwell has "It needeth not that I swear" and Palmer "I need not swear". This study does not choose between them. At 75:3-4 man is answered that his bones will be gathered and even "the smallest bones of his fingers" in Sale, "his very finger tips" in Rodwell, "his finger tips" in Palmer, "his very fingers" in Pickthall and "his fingertips" in Itani restored. At 75:7-12 sight is dazzled, the moon eclipsed and the sun and moon brought together, and man asks where to flee and finds no refuge but with the Lord. At 75:16-19 the addressee is told not to move his tongue to hasten the recitation, for its gathering, its reading and its explanation rest with God. At 75:22-25 some faces shine that day, "looking towards their Lord" in Sale, "Outlooking towards their Lord" in Rodwell, "gazing on their Lord" in Palmer and "Looking toward their Lord" in Pickthall, and other faces are gloomy. At 75:26-30 the dying man is described, and at 75:29 the renderings differ: "one leg shall be joined with the other leg" in Sale, "one leg shall be laid over the other" in Rodwell, "leg shall be pressed on leg" in Palmer and "leg is entwined with leg" in Itani, where Pickthall has "agony is heaped on agony". This study does not choose between them.
75:31-40, a section in Tanzil's division of the text. At 75:31-33 the man who did not believe or pray is said to have turned his back and gone to his people in pride. At 75:34-35 the renderings divide: "woe be unto thee" in Sale, "woe to thee" in Palmer and "Woe to you" in Itani, where Rodwell has "nearer to thee and nearer" and Pickthall "Nearer unto thee and nearer". This study does not choose between them. At 75:36 man is asked whether he thinks he will be left "at full liberty, without control" in Sale, "supreme" in Rodwell, "to himself" in Palmer, "aimless" in Pickthall and "without purpose" in Itani, and at 75:37-39 he is reminded that he was a drop, then a clot, and was shaped and made male and female. The surah closes at 75:40 on whether the maker of all this has not the power to give the dead life.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer about meaning, and which source would be needed. It does not say whether an oath is sworn at its opening or declined, or what the soul that blames itself is, in the sense the words carry in Arabic: that would need a commentary (), and this study holds none - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists.
What this rests on
Opens with 75:1, widening across 40 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 40 passages, each with every cleared translation
40 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

75:40 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five English translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 75:1-40, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah al-Qiyaama, from 75:1 to 75:40, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
How the reading is divided. After a short reading of the whole surah, the reading takes the surah section by section. The sections are Tanzil's division of the text, from the Tanzil Project's Quran metadata, used under its Creative Commons Attribution licence; this study does not divide the surah itself, and each section is named by its verse range.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
What this study does not answer about occasion, and which source would be needed. It does not say what occasioned the words to the addressee about the recitation, or on what occasion any verse here was given: that would need an source (accounts of the occasions of revelation) whose usage rights can be verified, and this study holds none. It offers no academic-historical reading either: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
