Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies God the Sovereign, the Holy, the Almighty, the Wise.
What does Surah al-Jumu'a say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 62:1 All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah, the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One, the Mighty, the Wise. This is here because it opens the surah with everything praising God, and the verb differs: "Whatever is in heaven and earth praiseth God" in Sale, "uttereth the Praise of God" in Rodwell, "celebrates the praises of God" in Palmer and "glorifieth Allah" in Pickthall.
- 02 62:2 He it is Who hath sent among the unlettered ones a messenger of their own, to recite unto them His revelations and to make them grow, and to teach them the Scripture and wisdom, though heretofore they were indeed in error manifest. This is here because it states who the messenger was sent among, and the renderings give four different readings of that word: "amidst the illiterate Arabians" in Sale, "to the pagan folk (Arabs)" in Rodwell, "unto the Gentiles" in Palmer and "among the unlettered ones" in Pickthall.
- 03 62:3 Along with others of them who have not yet joined them. He is the Mighty, the Wise. This is here because it extends the sending to people not yet among them, and only Sale and Rodwell say what they have not yet joined: "have not yet attained unto them, by embracing the faith" in Sale and "have not yet overtaken those who preceded them in the faith" in Rodwell, against "who have not yet joined them" in Pickthall.
- 04 62:4 That is the bounty of Allah; which He giveth unto whom He will. Allah is of Infinite Bounty. This is here because it names what the sending is, and the word for it differs: "This is the free grace of God" in Sale, "This is the goodness of God" in Rodwell, "That is God's grace" in Palmer and Itani, and "That is the bounty of Allah" in Pickthall.
- 05 62:5 The likeness of those who are entrusted with the Law of Moses, yet apply it not, is as the likeness of the ass carrying books. Wretched is the likeness of folk who deny the revelations of Allah. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk. This is here because the renderings differ on what was entrusted and on what carries the books: "charged with the observance of the law" in Sale and "entrusted with the Torah" in Itani; "an ass laden with books" in Sale and "the donkey carrying works of literature" in Itani.
- 06 62:6 Say (O Muhammad): O ye who are Jews! If ye claim that ye are favoured of Allah apart from (all) mankind, then long for death if ye are truthful. This is here because it is where the surah addresses a claim of standing, and the renderings word the claim differently: "the friends of God above other men" in Sale, "the clients of God" in Palmer, "favoured of Allah apart from (all) mankind" in Pickthall and "the chosen of God" in Itani. The verse addresses that claim and says nothing of anyone who does not make it.
- 07 62:7 But they will never long for it because of all that their own hands have sent before, and Allah is Aware of evil-doers. This is here because it gives the reason the test is not taken up, and each rendering words what the hands did differently: "because of that which their hands have sent before them" in Sale, "on account of their previous handywork" in Rodwell and "due to what their hands have advanced" in Itani.
- 08 62:8 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! the death from which ye shrink will surely meet you, and afterward ye will be returned unto the Knower of the Invisible and the Visible, and He will tell you what ye used to do. This is here because it answers the test with the death itself: "verily death, from which ye fly, will surely meet you" in Sale, "the death from which ye shrink will surely meet you" in Pickthall and "The death from which you flee will catch up with you" in Itani.
- 09 62:9 O ye who believe! When the call is heard for the prayer of the day of congregation, haste unto remembrance of Allah and leave your trading. That is better for you if ye did but know. This is here because it names the day and what is set aside for it: "on the day of the assembly" in Sale, "upon the Congregation Day" in Palmer and "on Congregation Day" in Itani; "leave merchandizing" in Sale, "quit your traffic" in Rodwell and "drop all business" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies Does the Qur'an describe a call to prayer - and where do the words of the adhan come from?, Does the Qur'an command the Friday congregational prayer? and Is seeking wealth blameworthy in the Qur'an?, with different reasons there.
- 10 62:10 And when the prayer is ended, then disperse in the land and seek of Allah's bounty, and remember Allah much, that ye may be successful. This is here because it permits again what 62:9 set aside, and the seeking is worded five ways: "seek gain of the liberality of God" in Sale, "go in quest of the bounties of God" in Rodwell, "crave of God's grace" in Palmer, "seek of Allah's bounty" in Pickthall and "seek God's bounty" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about earning a living?, Does the Qur'an command the Friday congregational prayer? and Is seeking wealth blameworthy in the Qur'an?, with different reasons there.
- 11 62:11 But when they spy some merchandise or pastime they break away to it and leave thee standing. Say: That which Allah hath is better than pastime and than merchandise, and Allah is the Best of providers. This is here because it closes the surah on people leaving, and Sale alone says where the one left behind was standing: "leave thee standing up in thy pulpit" in Sale, against "leave thee standing alone" in Rodwell, "leave thee standing" in Pickthall and "leave you standing" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an command the Friday congregational prayer?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Jumu'a is eleven verses long. It opens with everything in the heavens and the earth praising God, states who a messenger was sent to, gives a comparison about those entrusted with a law, addresses a claim, and closes with an instruction about a day of gathering and what interrupted it.
At 62:2 the renderings do not agree on who the messenger was sent among. Sale has "amidst the illiterate Arabians", Rodwell "to the pagan folk (Arabs)" with the bracketed word his own, Palmer "unto the Gentiles", Pickthall "among the unlettered ones" and Itani "among the unlettered". Illiterate, pagan, Gentile and unlettered are four different readings of one word, and this study does not choose between them.
At 62:5 the comparison is of those entrusted with a law who did not carry it. What the law is named differs: "charged with the observance of the law" in Sale, "charged with the law" in Palmer, "entrusted with the Law of Moses" in Pickthall and "entrusted with the Torah" in Itani. The comparison itself is to a beast carrying books - "an ass laden with books" in Sale, "an ass beneath a load of books" in Rodwell, "an ass bearing books" in Palmer, "the ass carrying books" in Pickthall - where Itani has "the donkey carrying works of literature".
At 62:6 the address is to those who follow Judaism, and the renderings word both the address and the claim differently: "O ye who follow the Jewish religion" in Sale, "O ye Jews" in Rodwell, "O you who follow Judaism" in Itani, and Palmer and Pickthall both "O ye who are Jews!" The claim the verse answers is "the friends of God above other men" in Sale, "the friends of God" in Rodwell, "the clients of God" in Palmer, "favoured of Allah apart from (all) mankind" in Pickthall and "the chosen of God" in Itani. The verse addresses a claim of standing and answers it with a test; it says nothing here about anyone who does not make that claim, and neither does this study.
At 62:9 the day is named differently again: "on the day of the assembly" in Sale, "on the day of THE ASSEMBLY" in Rodwell, "upon the Congregation Day" in Palmer, "the day of congregation" in Pickthall and "on Congregation Day" in Itani. What is to be set aside is "leave merchandizing" in Sale, "quit your traffic" in Rodwell, "leave off traffic" in Palmer, "leave your trading" in Pickthall and "drop all business" in Itani. At 62:10 the prayer ends and the same activity is permitted again: "seek gain of the liberality of God" in Sale, "go in quest of the bounties of God" in Rodwell, "crave of God's grace" in Palmer, "seek of Allah's bounty" in Pickthall and "seek God's bounty" in Itani.
At 62:11 people leave while the addressee is still standing. Sale alone says where: "leave thee standing up in thy pulpit", against "leave thee standing alone" in Rodwell, "leave thee standing" in Pickthall, "leave you standing" in Itani, and Palmer "leave thee standing!" What drew them away is "any sport or merchandize" in Sale, "pastime and than merchandise" in Pickthall and "entertainment and business" in Itani.
The study Does the Qur'an describe a call to prayer - and where do the words of the adhan come from? carries 62:9, the study What does the Qur'an say about earning a living? carries 62:10, the study Does the Qur'an command the Friday congregational prayer? carries 62:9-11 and the study Is seeking wealth blameworthy in the Qur'an? carries 62:9-10, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say who the messenger was sent among in the sense the word carries in Arabic, what the comparison about a carried law was addressed to, or on what occasion any verse here was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 62:1, widening across 11 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Fakkeenyi warra Tawraatiin baachifamanii ergasii isii hin baadhatinii (ittiin hin hojjatinii) akka fakkeenya harree kitaabota gurguddaa baadhatuuti. Fakkeenyi ummata keeyyattoota Rabbii kijibsiisanii akkaan waa fokkatee! Rabbiin ummata miidhaa hojjattoota hin qajeelchu.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 62:1-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eleven verses of Surah al-Jumu'a, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
