Have you considered him who denies the religion?
What does Surah al-Ma'un say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 107:1 Hast thou observed him who belieth religion. This is here because it opens the surah with a question about a person it does not name, in words the renderings do not share: "denieth the future judgment as a falsehood" in Sale, "treateth our RELIGION as a lie" in Rodwell, "calls the judgment a lie" in Palmer, "belieth religion" in Pickthall, and Itani has "denies the religion?" ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage?, with a different reason there.
- 02 107:2 That is he who repelleth the orphan. This is here because it holds what that person does to the orphan, "pusheth away" in Sale, "trusteth away" in Rodwell, "pushes the orphan away" in Palmer, "repelleth" in Pickthall and "mistreats" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage?, with a different reason there.
- 03 107:3 And urgeth not the feeding of the needy. This is here because it holds what that person does not do for "the poor", as Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Itani have it, or "the needy", as Pickthall has it. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? and What does the Qur'an say about hospitality and generosity?, with different reasons there.
- 04 107:4 Ah, woe unto worshippers. This is here because it turns to "those who pray", as Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Itani have it, or "worshippers", as Pickthall has it, with a woe upon them.
- 05 107:5 Who are heedless of their prayer. This is here because it holds what is said of them, in words the renderings do not share: "negligent" in Sale, "careless" in Rodwell and Palmer and "heedless" in Pickthall and Itani.
- 06 107:6 Who would be seen (at worship). This is here because it holds a further thing said of them, in words the renderings do not share: "play the hypocrites" in Sale, "make a shew of devotion" in Rodwell, "pretend" in Palmer, "would be seen (at worship)" in Pickthall and "put on the appearance" in Itani.
- 07 107:7 Yet refuse small kindnesses. This is here because it closes the surah with what they hold back, "necessaries to the needy" in Sale, "help to the needy" in Rodwell, "necessaries" in Palmer, "small kindnesses" in Pickthall and "the assistance" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Ma'un is seven verses long. It opens with a question put to someone it does not name: "What thinkest thou" in Sale, "WHAT thinkest thou" in Rodwell, "Hast thou considered" in Palmer, "Hast thou observed" in Pickthall and "Have you considered" in Itani.
At 107:1 the question is about the one who "denieth the future judgment as a falsehood" in Sale, "treateth our RELIGION as a lie" in Rodwell, "calls the judgment a lie" in Palmer, "belieth religion" in Pickthall, and Itani has "denies the religion?" So Sale and Palmer have "judgment" where Rodwell has "RELIGION", Pickthall "religion" and Itani "religion?" The verse does not name that person, and this study does not either.
At 107:2 that person "pusheth away the orphan" in Sale, "trusteth away the orphan" in Rodwell, "pushes the orphan away" in Palmer, "repelleth the orphan" in Pickthall and "mistreats the orphan" in Itani. At 107:3 the renderings have "stirreth not up others to feed the poor" in Sale, "stirreth not others up to feed the poor" in Rodwell, "urges not (others) to feed the poor" in Palmer, "urgeth not the feeding of the needy" in Pickthall and "does not encourage the feeding of the poor" in Itani. Palmer's "(others)" is in brackets that mark the word as his own.
At 107:4 the renderings turn to "those who pray" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Itani, where Pickthall has "worshippers". At 107:5 they are "negligent at their prayer" in Sale, "careless" in Rodwell, "careless in their prayers" in Palmer, "heedless of their prayer" in Pickthall and "heedless of their prayers" in Itani. At 107:6 the renderings use different words: "play the hypocrites" in Sale, "make a shew of devotion" in Rodwell, "pretend" in Palmer, "would be seen (at worship)" in Pickthall, with the words in brackets his own, and "put on the appearance" in Itani.
At 107:7 what they hold back is "necessaries to the needy" in Sale, "help to the needy" in Rodwell, "necessaries" in Palmer, "small kindnesses" in Pickthall and "the assistance" in Itani, with "deny" in Sale, "refuse" in Rodwell and Pickthall and "withhold" in Palmer and Itani. The verse does not name what is held back beyond these words.
The study What does the Qur'an say about the reward for feeding the poor and freeing a person from bondage? carries 107:1-3, and the study What does the Qur'an say about hospitality and generosity? carries 107:3, each with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the one the question is about, those who pray or what is held back, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 107:1, widening across 7 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 7 passages, each with every cleared translation
7 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 107:1-7, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all seven verses of Surah al-Ma'un, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
