عَالَمِين AALAMIN Read the Qur'an in context

Does the Qur'an say what to do if you make a mistake in prayer?

In short

  • The text says: God does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, and those who believe pray not to be condemned if they forget or make a mistake (2:286); and woe is said to those who pray and are heedless, careless or negligent of their prayer (107:4-5).
  • The text does not say: what to do if a mistake is made in the prayer.
  • The rest comes from: a report that the Prophet, having stood up after two units without sitting, made two prostrations before ending the prayer is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 22: Forgetfulness in Prayer (Bukhari 1224).

Where the renderings split

2:286, Itani: "do not condemn us if we forget or make a mistake"

2:286, Pickthall: "Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark"

2:286, Palmer: "catch us not up, if we forget or make mistake"

2:286, Rodwell: "punish us not if we forget, or fall into sin"

2:286, Sale: "punisth us not, if we forget, or act sinfully"

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:286 Our Lord, do not condemn us if we forget or make a mistake: the prayer that names forgetting
  2. 02 107:4–5 Woe to those who pray and are heedless of their prayer
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The text names forgetting and mistakes as things to ask pardon for, not things with a procedure. At 2:286 Itani has "Our Lord, do not condemn us if we forget or make a mistake". Rodwell and Sale render the second word as falling into sin, or acting sinfully, and Pickthall as missing the mark.

At 107:5 the blame is for heedlessness: Pickthall has "Who are heedless of their prayer". The verse does not speak of a slip within it.

The prostrations for forgetfulness many readers know come from outside the Qur'an, from a report named above, with a link.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:286, widening across 2 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation

2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

God does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. To its credit is what it earns, and against it is what it commits. "Our Lord, do not condemn us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not burden us as You have burdened those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear; and pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Lord and Master, so help us against the disbelieving people."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

God will not require of the soul save its capacity. It shall have what it has earned, and it shall owe what has been earned from it. Lord, catch us not up, if we forget or make mistake; Lord, load us not with a burden, as Thou hast loaded those who were before us. Lord, make us not to carry what we have not strength for, but forgive us, and pardon us, and have mercy on us. Thou art our Sovereign, then help us against the people who do not believe

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

God will not burden any soul beyond its power. It shall enjoy the good which it hath acquired, and shall bear the evil for the acquirement of which it laboured. O our Lord! punish us not if we forget, or fall into sin; O our Lord! and lay not on us a load like that which thou hast laid on those who have been before us; O our Lord! and lay not on us that for which we have not strength: but blot out our sins and forgive us, and have pity on us. Thou art our protector: give us victory therefore over the infidel nations

George Sale published 1734

God will not force any soul beyond its capacity: It shall have the good which it gaineth, and it shall suffer the evil which it gaineth. O Lord punisth us not, if we forget, or act sinfully: O Lord lay not on us a burden like that which thou hast laid on those who have been before us; neither make us, O Lord, to bear what we have not strength to bear, but be favourable unto us, and spare us, and be merciful unto us. Thou art our patron, help us therefore against the unbelieving nations

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. They all have believed in God, and His angels, and His scriptures, and His messengers: "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord. To you is the destiny."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 The messenger believeth in that which hath been revealed unto him from his Lord and (so do) believers. Thy mercy, Lord! for unto thee must we return

George Sale1734 The apostle believeth in that which hath been sent down unto him from his Lord, and the faithful also. Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

The question asks whether the Qur'an says what to do after a mistake in prayer. The probe 'forget\w*|forgot\w*' returns 185 rows; 2:286 is the one carried, and the rest, on forgetting God, a covenant or a reminder, are recorded as not carried.

The prayer's manner is read in the study What does the Qur'an say about how to pray - and what does it not give? This study names one report outside the Qur'an and does not grade it.
