Woe to the defrauders.
What does Surah al-Mutaffifin say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 83:1 Woe unto the defrauders. This is here because it opens the surah on woe to those who cheat in measure, and how they are named differs: "those who give short measure or weight" in Sale, "those who give short weight" in Palmer and "the defrauders" in Pickthall and Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?, with a different reason there.
- 02 83:2 Those who when they take the measure from mankind demand it full. This is here because it says what they do when others measure for them: they "take the full" in Sale, "exact the full" in Rodwell, "take full measure" in Palmer, "demand it full" in Pickthall and "take in full" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?, with a different reason there.
- 03 83:3 But if they measure unto them or weight for them, they cause them loss. This is here because it says what they do when they measure or weigh for others: "defraud" in Sale, "minish" in Rodwell, "diminish" in Palmer, "they cause them loss" in Pickthall and "they cheat" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?, with a different reason there.
- 04 83:4 Do such (men) not consider that they will be raised again. This is here because it asks whether they do not reckon with being raised, and the verb differs: "think" in Sale and Palmer, "have they no thought" in Rodwell, "consider" in Pickthall and "know" in Itani. The bracket in Pickthall's "such (men)" is his own. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?, with a different reason there.
- 05 83:5 Unto an Awful Day. This is here because it names the day: "the great day" in Sale and Rodwell, "the mighty day" in Palmer, "an Awful Day" in Pickthall and "a Great Day" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?, with a different reason there.
- 06 83:6 The day when (all) mankind stand before the Lord of the Worlds. This is here because it says before whom mankind stands on that day: "the Lord of all creatures" in Sale and "the Lord of the worlds" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(all)" is his own. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?, with a different reason there.
- 07 83:7 Nay, but the record of the vile is in Sijjin. This is here because it says where the record of the wicked is, and what it is called differs: "the register of the actions of the wicked" in Sale, "the register of the wicked" in Rodwell, "the book of the wicked" in Palmer, "the record of the vile" in Pickthall and "The record of the wicked" in Itani. The place is "Sejjin" in Sale, "Sidjin" in Rodwell, "Siggin" in Palmer, "Sijjin" in Pickthall and "Sijjeen" in Itani.
- 08 83:8 Ah! what will convey unto thee what Sijjin is. This is here because it asks what will make the addressee understand what that place is: Sale has "what shall make thee to understand", Rodwell "who shall make thee understand", Palmer "what shall make thee know", Pickthall "what will convey unto thee" and Itani "how can you know".
- 09 83:9 A written record. This is here because it says what the record is: "a book distinctly written" in Sale and Rodwell, "a book inscribed" in Palmer, "A written record" in Pickthall and "A numerical book" in Itani.
- 10 83:10 Woe unto the repudiators on that day. This is here because it pronounces woe on that day on those who deny, and they are named differently: "those who accused the prophets of imposture" in Sale, "those who treated our signs as lies" in Rodwell, "those who say it is a lie" in Palmer, "the repudiators" in Pickthall and "the deniers" in Itani.
- 11 83:11 Those who deny the Day of Judgment. This is here because it says what they deny: "the day of judgment" in Sale, Rodwell and Pickthall, "the judgment day" in Palmer and "the Day of Reckoning" in Itani.
- 12 83:12 Which none denieth save each criminal transgressor. This is here because it says who it is that denies it: "every unjust and flagitious person" in Sale, "the transgressor, the criminal" in Rodwell, "every sinful transgressor" in Palmer, "each criminal transgressor" in Pickthall and "the sinful aggressor" in Itani.
- 13 83:13 Who, when thou readest unto him Our revelations, saith: (Mere) fables of the men of old. This is here because it gives what such a person answers when the signs are recited: "fables of the ancients" in Sale, "Tales of the Ancients" in Rodwell, "Old folks tales" in Palmer, "fables of the men of old" in Pickthall and "Legends of the ancients" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(Mere)" is his own.
- 14 83:14 Nay, but that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts. This is here because it says what has come over their hearts, and the renderings differ: "their lusts have cast a veil over their hearts" in Sale, "their own works have got the mastery over their hearts" in Rodwell, "that which they have gained has settled upon their hearts" in Palmer, "that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts" in Pickthall and "Their hearts have become corroded" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about hearts that harden?, with a different reason there.
- 15 83:15 Nay, but surely on that day they will be covered from (the mercy of) their Lord. This is here because it says that on that day they are kept from their Lord: "shut out" in Sale, "shut out as by a veil" in Rodwell, "veiled" in Palmer, "covered" in Pickthall and "screened" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(the mercy of)" is his own. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about seeing God in paradise?, with a different reason there.
- 16 83:16 Then lo! they verily will burn in hell. This is here because it says where they go then: "sent into hell to be burned" in Sale, "burned in Hell-fire" in Rodwell, "broil in hell" in Palmer, "burn in hell" in Pickthall and "roast in Hell" in Itani.
- 17 83:17 And it will be said (unto them): This is that which ye used to deny. This is here because it gives what is said to them then: Sale has "this is what ye denied as a falsehood", Rodwell "This is what ye deemed a lie", Palmer "what ye once did call a lie", Pickthall "This is that which ye used to deny" and Itani "This is what you used to deny". Sale alone names who says it, "by the infernal guards".
- 18 83:18 Nay, but the record of the righteous is in 'Illiyin. This is here because it turns to the record of the righteous: "the register of the actions of the righteous" in Sale, "the register of the righteous" in Rodwell, "the book of the righteous" in Palmer and "the record of the righteous" in Pickthall and Itani. The place is "Illiyyun" in Sale, "Illiyoun" in Rodwell, "Illiyun" in Palmer, "Illiyin" in Pickthall and "Elliyyeen" in Itani.
- 19 83:19 Ah, what will convey unto thee what 'Illiyin is. This is here because it asks what will make the addressee understand what that place is: Sale has "what shall cause thee to understand", Rodwell "who shall make thee understand", Palmer "what shall make thee know", Pickthall "what will convey unto thee" and Itani "how can you know".
- 20 83:20 A written record. This is here because it says what the record is: "a book distinctly written" in Sale and Rodwell, "book inscribed" in Palmer, "A written record" in Pickthall and "A numerical book" in Itani.
- 21 83:21 Attested by those who are brought near (unto their Lord). This is here because it names who witness the record: "Those who approach near unto God" in Sale, "those nigh to God" in Palmer, "those who are brought near" in Pickthall and "those brought near" in Itani, where Rodwell alone has "The angels who draw nigh unto God".
- 22 83:22 Lo! the righteous verily are in delight. This is here because it says where the righteous are: "among delights" in Sale and Rodwell, "in pleasure" in Palmer, "in delight" in Pickthall and "amid bliss" in Itani.
- 23 83:23 On couches, gazing. This is here because it says how they rest and look: "Seated on couches" in Sale, "Seated on bridal couches" in Rodwell, "upon couches" in Palmer, "On couches" in Pickthall and "On thrones" in Itani. What they look at is named in Sale alone, "objects of pleasure".
- 24 83:24 Thou wilt know in their faces the radiance of delight. This is here because it says what shows in their faces: "the brightness of joy" in Sale, "the brightness of delight" in Rodwell, "the brightness of pleasure" in Palmer, "the radiance of delight" in Pickthall and "the radiance of bliss" in Itani.
- 25 83:25 They are given to drink of a pure wine, sealed. This is here because it says what they are given to drink: "pure wine, sealed" in Sale, "Choice sealed wine" in Rodwell, "wine that is sealed" in Palmer, "a pure wine, sealed" in Pickthall and "a sealed wine" in Itani.
- 26 83:26 Whose seal is musk - for this let (all) those strive who strive for bliss. This is here because it names the seal as musk and calls for striving after it: "let those aspire, who aspire to happiness" in Sale, "let those pant who pant for bliss" in Rodwell, "let the aspirants aspire" in Palmer, "let (all) those strive who strive for bliss" in Pickthall and "what competitors should compete for" in Itani.
- 27 83:27 And mixed with water of Tasnim. This is here because it says what the drink is mixed with: "the water mixed therewith shall be of Tasnim" in Sale, "the waters of Tasnim" in Rodwell, "tempered with Tasnim" in Palmer, "mixed with water of Tasnim" in Pickthall and "Its mixture is of Tasneem" in Itani.
- 28 83:28 A spring whence those brought near (to Allah) drink. This is here because it names the source of that mixture, "a fountain" in Sale, "Fount" in Rodwell and "a spring" in Palmer, Pickthall and Itani, and those who drink from it are "who approach near unto the divine presence" in Sale, "they who draw nigh to God" in Rodwell, "those nigh to God" in Palmer and "those brought near" in Pickthall and Itani.
- 29 83:29 Lo! the guilty used to laugh at those who believed. This is here because it turns to those who laughed at the believers: "They who act wickedly" in Sale, "The sinners" in Rodwell, "those who sin" in Palmer, "the guilty" in Pickthall and "Those who committed crimes" in Itani. Sale has "laugh the true believers to scorn", Rodwell "laugh the faithful to scorn" and Palmer "do laugh at those who believe", where Pickthall and Itani have "used to laugh".
- 30 83:30 And wink one to another when they passed them. This is here because it says what they did when they passed them: "they wink at one another" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, "wink one to another" in Pickthall and "they would wink at one another" in Itani.
- 31 83:31 And when they returned to their own folk, they returned jesting. This is here because it says how they came back to their own: "making scurrilous jests" in Sale, "jesting" in Rodwell and Pickthall, "ridiculing them" in Palmer and "exulting" in Itani.
- 32 83:32 And when they saw them they said: Lo! these have gone astray. This is here because it gives what they said on seeing the believers: Sale has "these are mistaken men", Rodwell "These are the erring ones", Palmer "these do go astray", Pickthall "these have gone astray" and Itani "These people are lost".
- 33 83:33 Yet they were not sent as guardians over them. This is here because it answers them: "they are not sent to be keepers over them" in Sale, "they have no mission to be their guardians" in Rodwell, "they are not sent as guardians over them" in Palmer and "they were not sent as guardians over them" in Pickthall and Itani.
- 34 83:34 This day it is those who believe who have the laugh of disbelievers. This is here because it turns the laughter round. Who laughs is "the true believers" in Sale, "the faithful" in Rodwell, "those who believe" in Palmer and Pickthall and "those who believed" in Itani, and at whom is "the infidels" in Sale and Rodwell, "the misbelievers" in Palmer, "disbelievers" in Pickthall and "the unbelievers" in Itani. When is "one day" in Sale, "on that day" in Rodwell and Itani, "today" in Palmer and "This day" in Pickthall.
- 35 83:35 On high couches, gazing. This is here because it says what they do then: "Lying on couches they shall look down upon them" in Sale, "reclining on bridal couches they behold them" in Rodwell, "Upon couches shall they gaze" in Palmer, "On high couches, gazing" in Pickthall and "On luxurious furnishings, looking on" in Itani. Sale alone places those looked at "in hell".
- 36 83:36 Are not the disbelievers paid for what they used to do. This is here because it closes on a question about repayment: Sale has "Shall not the infidels be rewarded", Rodwell "Shall not the infidels be recompensed", Palmer "are the misbelievers rewarded", Pickthall "Are not the disbelievers paid" and Itani "Have the unbelievers been repaid".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Mutaffifin runs from 83:1 to 83:36. It opens on woe to those who cheat in measure and weight, and asks whether they do not think they will be raised for a day when mankind stands before its Lord. It sets the record of the wicked against the record of the righteous, describes the righteous at ease and given a sealed drink, and closes on those who mocked the believers and are mocked in their turn. At 83:1 those addressed are "those who give short measure or weight" in Sale, "those who give short weight" in Palmer and "the defrauders" in Pickthall and Itani. At 83:14 what lies on their hearts is worded differently: "their lusts have cast a veil over their hearts" in Sale, "their own works have got the mastery over their hearts" in Rodwell, "that which they have gained has settled upon their hearts" in Palmer, "that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts" in Pickthall and "Their hearts have become corroded by what they used to earn" in Itani.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer about meaning, and which source would be needed. It does not say what the places named for the record of the wicked and the record of the righteous are, or what the spring named near its close is, in the sense the words carry in Arabic: that would need a commentary (), and this study holds none - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists.
What this rests on
Opens with 83:1, widening across 36 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 36 passages, each with every cleared translation
36 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

DIN 31635ʿalā l-ʾarāʾiki yanẓurūna
The translators word this verse differently
On luxurious furnishings, looking on.
On high couches, gazing
Upon couches shall they gaze
As reclining on bridal couches they behold them
Lying on couches they shall look down upon them in hell
83:36 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five English translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 83:1-36, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah al-Mutaffifin, from 83:1 to 83:36, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
What this study does not answer about occasion, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any verse here was given: that would need an source (accounts of the occasions of revelation) whose usage rights can be verified, and this study holds none. It offers no academic-historical reading either: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
