Woe to the defrauders.
What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 83:1–6 WOE UNTO THE DEFRAUDERS: those who, when they take the measure from mankind, DEMAND IT FULL; but if they measure unto them or weigh for them, THEY CAUSE THEM LOSS. Do such men not consider that they will be raised again unto an awful day, THE DAY WHEN MANKIND STAND BEFORE THE LORD OF THE WORLDS? In as ONE PASSAGE and at the full six verses rather than the first three, because 83:4-6 is the argument and not a coda: a commercial practice is answered with the resurrection. The offence is defined by ASYMMETRY rather than by inaccuracy - nothing is said about faulty scales - and the closing question names what short measure depends on, which is nobody ever auditing you.
- 02 17:35 FILL THE MEASURE WHEN YE MEASURE, and WEIGH WITH A RIGHT BALANCE; that is meet, and better in the end. In because it is the command in its shortest form and gives a REASON rather than a penalty - better in the end.
- 03 26:181–183 GIVE FULL MEASURE, and be not of those who give less than the due; and weigh with the true balance, and WRONG NOT MANKIND IN THEIR GOODS, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth. In as ONE PASSAGE because Shu'ayb's charge runs from the scales to wronging people to corrupting the land in three consecutive verses - the text treats short measure as a species of corruption.
- 04 11:85 O my people, give full measure and full weight in justice, and WRONG NOT PEOPLE IN RESPECT OF THEIR GOODS, and do not evil in the earth, causing corruption. In because it is the same charge from the same prophet in another surah, which makes it his defining message.
- 05 6:152 Give full measure and full weight, IN JUSTICE - We task not any soul beyond its scope. In because the qualifying clause concedes that exact measure is not always possible and sets the standard at what can be borne. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an mean that no soul is burdened beyond what it can bear?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five passages, and the fullest of them explains what the offence actually is.
83:1-6 opens with WOE UNTO THE DEFRAUDERS and then defines them, and the definition is not what a reader expects. Nothing is said about faulty scales. What is named is having TWO STANDARDS: when they take the measure from other people they demand it in full, and when they measure or weigh for others they cause them loss. The fault is asymmetry - one rule for receiving, another for giving - and that is a definition a reader can apply well beyond a marketplace.
Then 83:4-6 does something the shorter quotation of this passage loses. It asks: DO SUCH MEN NOT CONSIDER THAT THEY WILL BE RAISED AGAIN, unto an awful day, THE DAY WHEN MANKIND STAND BEFORE THE LORD OF THE WORLDS? A commercial practice is answered with the resurrection. The connection the passage makes is that short-changing works only while nobody is auditing you, and it replies by naming an audit.
17:35 is the plain command, and the reason it gives is not punishment but outcome: fill the measure and weigh with a right balance - THAT IS MEET, AND BETTER IN THE END.
Two of the passages are Shu'ayb's and both run the same way. 26:181-183 and 11:85 each go from GIVE FULL MEASURE to WRONG NOT PEOPLE IN THEIR GOODS to DO NOT MAKE MISCHIEF IN THE EARTH, in three steps and without a break. The prophet whose message is scales treats short measure and the corruption of a country as continuous - which is why What does the Qur'an say about corruption in the land (fasad)? carries the same argument from the other end.
And 6:152 adds the clause that keeps the standard humane: give full measure and full weight, IN JUSTICE - WE TASK NOT ANY SOUL BEYOND ITS SCOPE. Exactness is required to the limit of what a person can manage and no further. The demand is strict and it is not impossible, and the text says so in the same sentence.
What this study does not carry is the same word used at cosmic scale. The scales the text sets for creation, and the scale that weighs deeds on the Day, are the studies What does the Qur'an say about balance in nature (mizan) - and about disturbing it? and What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? This one is about the weight a person hands to another person.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 83:1–6, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And approach not the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better, till he reach maturity. Give full measure and full weight, in justice. We task not any soul beyond its scope. And if ye give your word, do justice thereunto, even though it be (against) a kinsman; and fulfil the covenant of Allah. This He commandeth you that haply ye may remember
And draw not nigh unto the wealth of the orphan, save so as to better it, until he reaches full age; and give weight and measure with justice. We do not compel the soul save what it can compass; and when ye pronounce, then be just, though it be in the case of a relative
And come not nigh to the substance of the orphan, but to improve it, until he come of age: and use a full measure, and a just balance: We will not task a soul beyond its ability. And when ye give judgment, observe justice, even though it be the affair of a kinsman, and fulfil the covenant of God. This hath God enjoined you for your monition
And meddle not with the substance of the orphan, otherwise than for the improving thereof, until he attain his age of strength; and use a full measure, and a just balance. We will not impose a task on any soul, beyond its ability. And when ye pronounce judgement observe justice, although it be for or against one who is near of kin, and fulfill the covenant of God. This hath God commanded you, that ye may be admonished

Say, "Produce your witnesses who would testify that God has prohibited this." If they testify, do not testify with them. And do not follow the whims of those who deny Our revelation, and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, and those who equate others with their Lord.
Say: Come, bring your witnesses who can bear witness that Allah forbade (all) this. And if they bear witness, do not thou bear witness with them. Follow thou not the whims of those who deny Our revelations, those who believe not in the Hereafter and deem (others) equal with their Lord
Say, 'Come on then with your witnesses, who bear witness that God has prohibited these!' but if they do bear witness, bear thou not witness with them; nor follow the lust of those who say our signs are lies, and those who do not believe in the last day, or those who for their Lord make peers
SAY: Bring hither your witnesses who can witness that God hath forbidden these animals; but if they bear witness, witness not thou with them, nor witness to the conceits of those who charge our signs with falsehood, and who believe not in the life to come, and give equals to our Lord
Say, produce your witnesses, who can bear testimony that God hath forbidden this. But if they bear testimony of this, do not thou bear testimony with them, nor do thou follow the desires of those who accuse our signs of falsehood, and who believe not in the life to come, and equalize idols with their Lord

Say, "Come, let me tell you what your Lord has forbidden you: that you associate nothing with Him; that you honor your parents; that you do not kill your children because of poverty-We provide for you and for them; that you do not come near indecencies, whether outward or inward; and that you do not kill the soul which God has sanctified-except in the course of justice. All this He has enjoined upon you, so that you may understand."
Say: Come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord hath made a sacred duty for you: That ye ascribe no thing as partner unto Him and that ye do good to parents, and that ye slay not your children because of penury - We provide for you and for them - and that ye draw not nigh to lewd things whether open or concealed. And that ye slay not the life which Allah hath made sacred, save in the course of justice. This He hath command you, in order that ye may discern
Say, 'Come! I will recite what your Lord has forbidden you, that ye may not associate aught with Him, and (may show) kindness to your parents, and not kill your children through poverty;- we will provide for you and them;- and draw not nigh to flagrant sins, either apparent or concealed, and kill not the soul, which God hath forbidden save by right; that is what God ordains you, haply ye may understand
SAY: Come, I will rehearse what your Lord hath made binding on you - that ye assign not aught to Him as partner; and that ye be good to your parents; and that ye slay not your children, because of poverty: for them and for you will we provide: and that ye come not near to pollutions, outward or inward: and that ye slay not anyone whom God hath forbidden you, unless for a just cause. This hath he enjoined on you, to the intent that ye may understand
Say, come; I will rehearse that which your Lord hath forbidden you; that is to say, that ye be not guilty of idolatry, and that ye shew kindness to your parents, and that ye murder not your children for fear lest ye be reduced to poverty: We will provide for you and them; and draw not near unto hainous crimes, neither openly nor in secret; and slay not the soul which God hath forbidden you to slay, unless for a just cause. This hath He injoined you that ye may understand

This is My path, straight, so follow it. And do not follow the other paths, lest they divert you from His path. All this He has enjoined upon you, that you may refrain from wrongdoing.
And (He commandeth you, saying): This is My straight path, so follow it. Follow not other ways, lest ye be parted from His way. This hath He ordained for you, that ye may ward off (evil)
And God's compact fulfill ye; that is what He ordained you, haply ye may be mindful. Verily, this is my right way; follow it then, and follow not various paths, to separate yourselves from His way; that is what He has ordained you, haply ye may fear
And, "this is my right way." Follow it then; and follow not other paths lest ye be scattered from His path. This hath he enjoined you, that ye may fear Him
and that ye may know that this is my right way: Therefore follow it, and follow not the paths of others, lest ye be scattered from the path of God. This hath He commanded you that ye may take heed

Then We gave Moses the Scripture, perfect for the righteous, and explaining everything clearly, and a beacon, and mercy, that they may believe in the encounter with their Lord.
Again, We gave the Scripture unto Moses, complete for him who would do good, an explanation of all things, a guidance and a mercy, that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord
Then we gave Moses the Book, complete for him who acts aright, and a decision and a guidance and a mercy; haply in the meeting of their Lord they will believe
Then gave we the Book to Moses - complete for him who should do right, and a decision for all matters, and a guidance, and a mercy, that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord
We gave also unto Moses the book of the Law; a perfect rule unto him who should do right, and a determination concerning all things needful, and a direction and mercy; that the children of Israel might believe the meeting of their Lord

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 83:1-6, 17:35, 26:181-183, 11:85, 6:152, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - woe + unto + defrauders; when + they + take + measure + full; give + less + than + due; scant + measure; full + measure + full + weight; fill + the + measure; weigh + with + right + balance; defrauders; give + less. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 5:6; 12:59; 12:88; 16:81. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
